I recently immigrated to New Zealand from South Africa. I'm 39 and am pregnant with my first child. It's an exciting time except my dream of being pregnant included my mother being with me, shopping and planning, laughing and decorating. I miss my mum

How wonderful to be expecting your first child. Congratulations. Find some other women in your area who are also expecting their first child. Chances are her mother is not there in the same vicinity. Parent's' Centre and Ante-natal classes are a good way to meet other women as well.

Thsnk you Starpath. Yes the ideal would be to find other mother's to be. The hick up is that I've only been in New Zealand 5 months so I don't know anybody really. My antenatal classes only start at week 20. The good news is I'm flying home for 4 weeks so I'll be with my mom and when I get back I'll be at the antenatal classes.

Hi there I was in the same boat, from the UK and didn't have any intimate friends, only work ones with which I didn't have much in common. When I told my Mum I was pregnant her reaction was sad that she wasn't with me. I now have a 6 month old boy and some really really great friends that I met through my antenatal classes, the key is to join a class that will contain people from your area and who are likely to have similar things in common. I now meet up with my friends everyday for walks in the park, we swap advice and buy each other coffee when we've had a bad night, we are also going to babysit for each other when the time is right. It's such a daunting experience going through this without your Mum and your Mum will feel it too but just remember you aren't alone and there will be someone near you in the same position who will need a friend too. Just be open to joining playgroups and coffee meetings - Plunket is a great source of information for coffee groups after birth, also get on the forums on this website and post your location and organise a meet up for your area. No one loves you like your Mum but friends you make at this exciting time will be friends for life. Good luck :)
