9-12 Weeks

Week 9
YOU

Your breasts are now growing and the areola (nipple area) may darken in colour. Your bra size may increase by up to 2 sizes during pregnancy. A supportive bra will help to reduce discomfort and will also help protect your breast tissue.
You may also notice some changes in your skin caused by increased hormones.
It is common in pregnancy for gums to thicken, which may lead to gum disease if not taken care of. Brush and floss regularly, and don’t be alarmed if your gums bleed during pregnancy, this is a result of increased blood supply and thickening in the gums.
Are you getting enough calcium? Calcium helps develop strong bones and teeth in your baby. Visit our Diet section for more information.

YOUR BABY
Your baby now measures about 22-30mm long and weighs between 3-5 grams. The tail like bottom of your baby's spinal cord has now disappeared and baby's muscles are being worked as your baby moves around.
Baby's hands and feet are losing their webbed look now and the arms are long enough that baby's hands touch over the chest. Your baby's chest has also separated from the abdominal cavity by muscles that will develop into babys diaphram.
Facial features are continuing to develop, baby's eyes are now formed with membrane eyelids that will not open until about week 27 and baby's nose is now clearly defined.

Week 10
YOU
You're probably still feeling tired and on a bit of an emotional roller coaster, which is understandable given the changes taking place. Do continue to rest and take time out for yourself. You may find your morning sickness starting to improve this week,  if not you may want to check out our tips for morning sickness section.
You will probably have your first antenatal appointment with your LMC this week. This initial appointment will probably take around an hour, follow up appointments will usually be half an hour. At this initial appointment, your LMC will take a full medical history, including a family history of diseases such as diabetes and epilepsy. He or she will check your blood pressure and your weight and talk to you about what to expect over the next few weeks. You may also be offered a referral for the Nuchal Translucency scan, which measures the fold of skin at the back of your baby’s neck to give an estimated risk of conditions such as downs syndrome.  In some areas this scan is offered routinely, in other areas it is only offered to those deemed to be “higher risk” – mothers to be over the age of 35 and those who have previously had a child with downs syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities.

YOUR BABY
This week your baby officially graduates from being an embryo, to become a foetus.  He or she now measures between 28-35mm long and weighs under 10 grams.
Your baby's head is still large in proportion to the rest of his/her body as a result of rapid brain development over this time. Neurons in your baby's brain are being produced at a rate of over 200,000 per minute.

By the end of this week baby's inner ears are complete and the outer ears are growing. Baby's wrists and ankles have formed and fingers and toes are now clearly visible.

Internally your baby's lungs are growing, the stomach and intestines are formed and genitals have begun to form.
Your baby's umbilical cord and placenta are now properly formed and are circulating important blood hormones and nutrients to your baby’s body.

Week 11
YOU
You may have noticed that you have gained weight, this is a result of a number of things.:  you baby's support system (placenta, amniotic fluid etc) are rapidly developing; your uterus and breasts are enlarging and your total blood volume is increasing. During the first trimester you can expect to gain about 1-2kg, over your second trimester you can expect to gain about 6kg and over your third trimester you may gain about 5kg.
If you are underweight or over weight before pregnancy your doctor may recommend different dietary options. See our section on Diet during pregnancy for more information.

YOUR BABY
Your baby could measure up to about 5cm and weigh about 15 grams; this is expected to increase rapidly:  by week 20 he or she will be about 15cms long and weigh 255 grams. In order to cope with such growth and to provide your baby with more nutrients during this time, blood vessels in the placenta are multiplying and enlarging.
Your baby's internal organs will now be developed and functioning, from now on they will grow in size and maturity. This means that from this point there is less risk of your baby developing any major congenital abnormalities.
Your baby's genitals are still developing this week, you won't be able to tell whether your baby is a boy or a girl yet but the tissue that covers this region will soon develop into either a penis or a clitoris and labia minora.
Other parts of the body are also developing such as fingernails and lips, and your baby's eyes are moving to their permanent position.

Week 12
YOU
It may not be noticeable from the outside yet, but your womb is starting to rise up out of the pelvis and you may be able to feel the top of your uterus just above your pubic bone..
You might want to think about maternity clothing as you may be finding your usual clothes are becoming tighter. The most important thing to consider when buying maternity clothes is comfort – you need to have plenty of room to grow!

YOUR BABY
Although your baby's sex organs are not visible yet, most of his other internal organs are now formed. Baby's head is becoming quite round. Your baby probably measures about 5cm long (from head to bottom).
