Birth rights

Question

My mum had numerous affairs before and after I was born. On my birth certificate it had the name of the man who raised me, however I found out a few years ago that he cannot be my dad because I don't share a blood type with either parent.
I decided at the time to let sleeping dogs lie. However, I now have a five month old son, who has some medical issues, my mother refuses to name who my father is. I am wanting to find my dad so I can get a full medical history for my boy.
I was wondering what rights I have since the man who raised me has his name is on my birth certificate, and my mother refuses to comply. I'd like to know if I have a legal leg to stand on.

Kirsten Ferguson replies:

Unfortunately family matters are usually tricky and can often be distressing.  It is a shame that your mother cannot be convinced to provide you with the information you need.  Without her co-operation you will likely be forced to take legal steps and engage a specialist family lawyer.  My recommendation would be to visit your local Family Law Centre for initial advice and then determine whether you wish to pursue the matter further through the court system.  If the information is necessary to determine essential health care for your child then a Court will likely look favourably on your desire to have the information you seek. Good luck!

Kind regards,
Kirsten Ferguson
