If you can find samples of formula try that as It's expensive to buy different cans. You could try mixing breast and formula to get bubs used to the taste. We went through all the bottles and formula, it was exhausting and costly. In the end he had silent reflux and milk allergy. Was this was solved it was smooth sailing.
Plunket are good but also listen to your gut, as a mum you know what's right and wrong you just have to learn to trust your instinct. Good luck.

Does it seem like she is in pain when she drinks it or just dosnt want it? If so she could have silent reflux but just sounds like she is trying to get used to the formula. If she refuses to take the formula you are on I would try changing to soy as it tastes diffrent and some babys will drink that rather than normal formula

(I hope ) My baby is 3 1/2 months old and although I am very petite myself, at 3 month plunket visit she weighed just over 5kgs and was in 9th %ile. She hasn't lost any weight and has been gaining weight steadily since birth - she wasn't prem - but is it enough?? Plunket nurse didn't express any concern but then again she is just 1 person and could that be because I have been BF and "nothing can go wrong with BF!!"(sarcasm). My baby seemed happy enough but for various reasons I have decided to put her on the bottle. She hates the taste of formula! After trying fancy bottles that try to be like the boob & nipple I found she just likes the very plain teat. I've tried expressed milk but it takes way too long & I don't have the time what with having a 6yr old aswell. It's very frustrating as there are hardly any resources on FF & I don't have much idea what to do. Does anyone have tips?

He's now drinking 220ml at 8 months. So I think that's a good amount and you don't need to worry too much. My plunket nurse told me they put more than you really need to give them on the formula cans to make you use more/buy more. So I think he's doing just fine. At 4 months my DS was drinking about 150ml per bottle every 3-4 hrs.

I find it easier to fill the bottles each morning for the day and when going out I would keep them inside the avent thermabag so the bottle was still warm and mixed better with the formula. Also really good to invest in a powder dispenser so you can just bring what formula you need for the day not the whole tin.

I developed a good bum patting routine which could put DS to sleep in a noisy environment within minutes, doesn't work now though!

GL

Second time Mum here - my eldest is 20 years odl and my youngest is 4 1/2 months!
I have recently changed to bottle as he has moved from 25th percentile to 17th percentile in weight. I have suspected for a while that I wasn't able to give him what he needs and plunket suggested a top up of formula. I find that my milk has now pretty much stopped and what I am producing, he is finding difficult to take from me. I'm sad about that as I had hoped to keep at least some supply goping, especially as I enjoy it and he likes to breastfeed to sleep if we are out (doesn't settle well to sleep unless in cot). But at least he is putting on weight now.

A few questions:
He only takes a max of 150ml - 180ml per feed. I am hoping he will incrase this and spread his feeds out as he gets used to taking a larger feed? I'm guessing he has never had a good sized feed from breast before hence his smaler botle feeds? What do most of your 4 mth olds take in a sitting?

What do you find most convenient and safe way of going out with a preprepared bottle?

Thanks guys - I am so new to this.

She is 4 months now and we are doing the opposite - bottle for every feed except 1.
I tried expressing but I just couldnt get the hang of it - my nipple would just get stuck in the pump nozzle thing (great to have long nipples for BF though! we had no problems!) so I tried hand expressing which was more successful, but took forever! and bubs would want to be feed by the time I had finished messing around with it.

Lili loves her bottle. When I use the 150ml bottle she likes to hold it herself and she easily finishes 220mls from the big bottle. She has had lots of different people give her the bottle too - I feel good in knowing that she wont have any trouble feeding at daycare.

I think any mummy that is feeding their baby regardless of how the food gets in there - is doing a great job and is always thinking of baby first. It depresses me sometimes to think of the arguements and fuss over BF or Formula when there are kids in our country who have no meals and go to school hungry everyday.

I tell you what is also great about the bottle (confession time) we got a few varieties of bottle and she has definately got a preference. There is one type of bottle that she hates which I have 2 of......I make a nice warm bottle of milky milo in the unused bottle and it has become mummies bottle (not that Lili would ever see me with it and my partner has no idea, totally my secret) but it is sooo nice to be able to lie horizontally in bed with a book and have a hot drink without sitting up.

I was exhausted but devastated to stop. Went on to get super depressed after stopping as I stopped cold turkey - I should have realised but didn't know to stop gradually so the hormonal shift made me feel anxious and depressed. It took me about a month to feel 'normal' again but a bit longer than that to actually make peace with myself that I was formula feeding when ALL I wanted was to BF. It's such a shame so much pressure is put on us to BF when I am SO much happier now that I have a happy baby and not spending half my time expressing.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Formula and judgemental comments are the last thing we need

Have you tried domperidone and the other herbal remedies. I know they work for some people, not for me, unfortunately. I also know of other people who had a low milk supply and did manage to get their supply up to full BF but it took 3 months - a lot of hard work of expressing after every feed and trying to relax as much as possible - which I know is really hard to do when you're under stress of it not working the way you want.

I hope you're happy with where you are at and remember the most important thing for your baby is to have a happy MUM

    Author: snugglebug
Subject: 19695
Posted: 28 December 2010 at 9:45am

Hi there

Just wanted to join in chatting here. We are on bottles now, breastfed for a month and it was a nightmare the whole time. DS could never latch in hospital, so we started out with nipple shields. Then after 2 weeks he developed bad reflux and for the next 3 weeks feeding was a constant battle, with him arching his back, scratching me, screaming, crying through feeds, and me dreading each feed because of what might happen. I ended up in tears regularly through feeding.

One day after a week of non stop screaming I gave in and gave him a bottle of formula when he just couldn't get any more from my breasts, and I realised with the way he took it that he was so hungry. After starting expressing I realised that I was not getting enough milk to feed him, and my left breast was hardly giving any milk at all.

I was devestated with the choice to go to bottles and formula because when breastfeeding was working, I loved it, and I miss the closeness now, and I have beaten myself up so much about it, but I have a happier and full baby and I need to make him my first priority.

At the moment I am expressing as many feeds as I can, and feeding with formula other times. I can see though this will be very hard long term, and that my supply is gradually lessening, so Im sure we'll be full time formula at some point but Im trying to give him as much breast milk as I can before then.

Would love to chat to other Mums in this situation as I do feel very isolated as breastfeeding seems to have worked out for most people I know

I want to learn more about the formulas myself so that i can decide which is best for our boy. I've been told that soy isn't good for babies and goats is the same as cows milk. I need to know how true these comments are.

Does anyone know where i could find out more about the formulas? I thought of ringing the number on the tins but i thought i would get a bias opinion. I think my biggest fear was people would think that I was a bad mother for not BF, but the people who matter don't.

Your bub is little for such a short amount of time you need to cherish every little moment. Think about it, if you we're still struggling with breastfeeding/expressing, worrying about his weight loss/gain that's not very enjoyable for either of you is it? So if your decision to FF makes him gain weight and be happy then it should make you happy too! There's soooo many things to worry about with a little one, you're not doing anything wrong by formula feeding, you're not poisoning him or hurting him so don't stress! I think it's perfectly normal to feel sad when you stop BF though, but that will pass

There are so many people out there that think BF is best and you should FF as a last resort and that's cool, each to their own! But there's also people like me who think if the baby seems happier and more content being bottle fed then give them formula!! But by choosing to FF you shouldn't feel bad or guilty, you're doing what is best for you and bubs. You can still enjoy feeding them!! I love feeding Ty, he's not a cuddly baby and its the only time I get to snuggle up to him!!

As he was jaundice though he was incredibly sleepy and it took a long time to feed him. He lost 8% of his weight which seemed to be okay.

Once we got home, it was getting harder & harder to keep him awake and it took around 1 & half hours to feed - we got a blood test done and his jaundice levels had increased - not quite enough to put him under the lights but combined with a further weight loss, the MW told me to ensure that I woke him every 2-3 hours to feed and to do all possible to keep him awake - fan, ice cubes, flannels etc. He had also lost more weight and he was up to just over 10% loss - total of 6.4 pounds (he was 7.2 when he was born).

When she came back 2 days later he was pretty much the same weight - i was relieved that he hadn't lost more but was worried that he hadn't put on anything. MW said to try boob for 30 mins, then top up with EBM or FM. DH went out and got me a pump and away we went. I couldn't get the amount needed so had to top up with FM - so boob 30 mins which no success as he no longer would take it, but keep trying anyway just in case, EBM & FM - 1.5 hour or more process as he was still so sleepy.

After 3 days of this regime, MW came back - he had only put on 40g. She didn't seem overly concerned but said when she came back in 5 days time, he really needs to have put on a decent amount if possible.

I packed in the expressing on Friday night. I feel incredibly guilty but also relieved at the same time. I don't feel he was thriving on my milk - it could be a coincidence but since we have gone fully FF, he has been awake during every feed and has woken me a number of times when I have gone a bit over the 3 hours to let me know he is hungry. I am wondering if perhaps I was not getting enough of the hindmilk during expressing? My boobs had become quite engorged even though I was expressing every 3 hours and I emptied them each time (this was probably user error on my behalf or maybe because I was using a hand pump not an electric one?).

The thing that disappoints me is that when BF was working well (ie no sore nipples, he latched, it was just keeping him awake and the lack of weight gain that was the issue) it was enjoyable for me. I just didn't seem myself expressing long term or until he learnt to latch again if ever. But guess I just have to remember that what is right for mumma is right for baby?

Edited by monkey33

    Author: mummymonster
Subject: 19695
Posted: 07 January 2010 at 8:05pm

There's not much on FF out there, so this thread is great.
I still feel guilty DS is on formula now, it's when I'm reading baby-care articles which are always written with the assumption that you're BFing that make me feel the worst.
I thought BF was going ok for the first 3mths, though looking back maybe not. Mth4 was really hard work. Plunket didn't believe anything was wrong as DS was gaining weight. I was convinced he was starving. At 4mth 1wk I went to the Dr to discuss FF & solids as I thought his problem was hunger. She thought it could also be silent reflux.
That night, formula & gaviscon and I had a new happy baby.
I had a plan to slowly switch him from his 10 BFs to FF. DS had other ideas.
By day 2 I was thinking, OK, 2 BFs per day and the rest FF. By day 4 I was thinking, OK, if I can just get him to have 1 BF a day. By the end of the first week he was 100% FF. My breasts only got engorged once, I guess that means I really didn't have much milk for the little guy.

Anyhow, why I'm really writing on here is about quantity and frequency.

I read somewhere he should be getting 150ml x weight in kg divided by number of feeds per day. Though I read somewhere else that at each feed if there's about 10-30ml left the amount it right.
DS is 7.5kg = 1125ml
He gets 4 x 240ml during the day (7, 11, 3, 7) then we give him 120ml when he wakes over night (approx 4am). If we give him more at 4, he then can't be bothered with breakfast and I'm still hoping he'll give up the 4am feed soon.
Out of the day feeds he finishes (like sucking air) 2or3 feeds, and leaves most of the other (random which one rejects).
So as he gets heavier, he needs more FF, right? Where do I stick the extra feed in? Or perhaps I should have a little 60ml bottle on standby for those feeds he's finishing? Or does it not really matter once he's moving on to solids?

I just received the above email and thought it may be of interest to those reading this thread? Wish I'd had access to this sort of info at the time DS was born.

Jaxnz1 - I tried for 12 weeks unsuccessfully to BF my son. During that time I expressed as much as I could and he probably had about 1/3 EBM and 2/3 formula up to 3 months of age, when we switched to 100% formula. If you are able to express, there is nothing wrong with feeding your baby both EBM and formula via bottle for as long as you want. Some women with amazing milk supplies manage to express enough EBM for all their babies feeds (wish I was so lucky - I had a terrible supply). My MW recommended not to mix the two - but I think that was mainly to try to ensure bubs didn't waste any of the EBM I'd spent so much time and effort trying to make for him. So usually I'd offer the EBM, and once that bottle was finished, offer a top up of formula if he still seemed hungry.

Even though I had such a terrible experience trying to establish BFing last time, I'm willing to give it another go with Leah when she arrives in March. But if it doesn't work out for us I'm hoping I won't succumb to the feelings of guilt and failure I associated with bottle feeding - there was really no point putting myself through all that agony - DS has turned out just fine! And there are some benefits of bottle feeding too - DH developed a really strong bond with DS from birth, as he was the main bottle-feeder for the first few weeks. This helped immensely when I returned to work full time and DH became a full time stay-home Dad (DS was 8 months old). You also get a break during the night etc if someone else is willing to get up and give a bottle .

Some bugs can make your baby extremely sick. Signs of foodborne illness to watch out for include: vomiting, fever, irritability and crying, not wanting to feed, or frequent dirty, runny nappies. Powdered infant formula is not sterile, so you should take particular care and follow label preparation instructions closely.

Babies who are pre-term, low birth weight, or who have an illness or condition that means their immune system is weaker than normal are most at risk from harmful bacteria. You should talk to your doctor or lead maternity carer about specific feeding advice.

For all babies, but especially those under 3 months of age, it is very important that caregivers are scrupulous about hygiene when making, storing and feeding infant formula or expressed breast milk.

Health professionals, our Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization all agree that babies should be fed breast milk wherever possible. Breast milk contains all the nutrition newborn babies need, and breastfeeding benefits both mother and baby. There are times when bottle feeding with either expressed breast milk or infant formula is necessary. Here are some tips for keeping baby's feed safe:

Before you touch any of your baby's feeding equipment or food always wash your hands properly. This means scrubbing with soap and water then drying thoroughly with a clean towel reserved for hands only. Don't use a tea towel or baby's feeding cloth. This is such a basic step, but it's so important.

Clean and sterilise feeding, expressing and preparation equipment for every feed, until your baby is at least three months old. A dishwasher will clean, but not sterilise.

Store infant formula powder in its container, sealed, in a cool dry place. Remember, infant formula is not a sterile product. Take care not to transfer harmful bugs by allowing hands or dirty spoons to dip into the powder.

It's best to mix powdered infant formula with cooled, boiled water just before you give it to your baby (once your baby is older than three months you can use town-supply tap water, otherwise keep using boiled water until the baby is 18 months old). Use it straight away and throw out any unused formula that's more than two hours old.

Made up formula can be stored at room temperature for up to two hours, or in the fridge for four hours. Expressed breast milk can sit at room temperature for up to four hours or in the fridge for 48 hours.

Never reheat already-warmed or partly-used feeds. While it's tempting to re-use expensive uneaten formula or precious expressed breast milk, bugs may have been transferred by you, or your baby's lips or hands and it's easy to lose track of how long the milk has been left at an unsafe temperature.

If you're travelling with bottles of breast milk or made up formula, keep them cold in a chilly bag with ice packs and warm only as needed.

Expressed breast milk or made up formula can be warmed by placing the bottle in a container of boiling water.

Electronic baby bottle warmers are safe to use as long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions. Ideally, choose a warmer that sounds an alarm when the right temperature is reached and then automatically switches off. Remove the bottle from the warmer and feed your baby within two hours.

Some travel models use the car battery as an energy source to heat the milk. Other products have a re-usable warmer pouch which can be activated by bending a metal disc attached. Both of these products are safe to use as long as the formula is made up by mixing the water and powder together just before warming. Remove the formula from the bottle warmer and finish feeding your baby within two hours. Throw out any unused formula.

Microwaves are not recommended for warming baby's milk because they can overheat the milk or heat it unevenly. This can cause nasty burns to the baby's mouth and throat. If you need to use a microwave stop halfway through and shake the bottle, then after heating shake the bottle again and let it stand for two to three minutes. Breast milk should not be warmed in a microwave as this may destroy some of the milk's immunological properties.

Whichever method you choose, always shake the bottle once warmed and check the temperature of the milk by shaking some drops onto the inside of your wrist before giving it to your baby.

The New Zealand Food Safety Authority and Ministry of Health have developed guidelines for warming infant formula. I too had a very difficult time bf and a lot of pain and tears until I gave up when my baby was 3 weeks old. I was in hospital with severe mastitis and I just couldn't take it anymore. I remember one time when I was feeding my boy and a drop of blood ran down his cheek and it was blood from my nipple. It was a very difficult time and I was so disappointed that bf didn't work out.
But my baby boy is 6 months old now and thriving. Im so relieved that infant formula exists!! It helped me finally bond properly without pain being the main thought whenever I held my baby.
All the best!

I had about 4 different midwives, all unable to latch me onto the breast properly. Even the lactation consultant latched me on and almost sent me through the roof with pain!

I've tried several feeds on the breast since being home and after 2 feeds my milk went pale pink, so obviously a bit of blood in there, then the third time it was just pure blood coming out of the nipple. After a feed on the breast my nipples become really red and blistered and pain is sometimes excrutiating.

Bubs had tongue tie which was only picked up after day 3 so she had the snip but things still haven't really improved.

So obviously after 3 days in hospital of not feeding properly she lost 12% of her body weight. The MW's at the hospital were just so determined for me to BF and I just knew it wasn't working. The 2nd night I was an absolute mess, I had a screaming baby and all she wanted was a decent feed and I couldn't give it to her

So now we're home I've been expressing fairly successfully, although am only getting around 60mls at a time so have to top up with formula.
My MW is good and is not pressuring me into BF'ing. I just am really over it and IMO as long as she is getting the breast milk somehow then that's all that matters.

I think I've already made the decision in my mind to just go to the bottle. I feel a little disappointed, but it's really not worth the pain and frustration for both me and bubs.

It's great to hear I'm not alone reading a few stories in this thread!
Would love to hear from others who have been through the same thing.
I started replacing breastfeed with formula feeds every couple weeks, and eventually got down to just doing the morning feed as a breastfeed.

Then I started feeling really guilty again and my neighbour put ideas into my head that i should try again and maybe i wasn't ready to stop BF. So I started up again for a couple of days and then decided it really wasn't what i wanted, so since Monday i've gone back to just BF the first feed of the day and FF the rest, and I am a lot happier, and so is Charlie. I still feel guilty occasionally and entertain thoughts of building up my supply again, but so far have managed to talk sense to myself before any action is taken

I think the guilt comes from still being able to breastfeed if I really wanted to, rather than physically not being able to, but I'm managing to ignore the guilt mostly and just get on with enjoying being a mum!

However since having spoken to one of my friends and reading some more of the posts here, I am feeling a lot better and have decided to start weaning Charlie off BF and onto FF.

I had feeding problems with him when he was first born so the hospital midwife suggested topping him up with formula as he wasn't getting enough from me (he wouldn't latch on properly and I ended up really sore). So from birth he has had at least one feed from a bottle. I am going to introduce formula to another of his feeds, probably the mid-afternoon one as my supply seems to be quite low around this time anyway. I'll see how that goes for the next week or so then continue replacing a BF feed with FF. That seems to be the way that is advised, a slow weaning process.

I am still struggling with the guilt of not wanting to BF anymore. My problem is that there is no physical reason why I can't continue. Charlie latches on fine now and my supply is good, but most of the day my breasts feel tender/sore or at best uncomfortable. I get stinging sensations in them. I've spoken to doctor, midwife and Plunket nurse but none of them seem to be at all interested or able to offer any advice, apart from my doctor who ruled out mastitis. As well as being in pain, I just want my body back, but can't help feeling that this is a selfish reason for wanting to stop! Arrgghhhhh!

Edited by shonpluck

Doctors (not obstetricians, but other specialists) stopped me BF in hospital, as I ended up in ICU and they wanted me to concentrate on getting well, not trooping to baby in NICU every 3 hours, or trying to express, as I found expressing extremely painful and stressful.

Anyway,James is now 12 weeks old, and seems to have extreme reflux or colic at some feeds and not others. I have had to give up winding him mid feed, as he just won't take the bottle again after you stop him sucking. He used to be such a good feeder, it was like a dream up until a month ago, now he screams and carrys on at some feeds, and his volume has dropped - he got up to 120mls a bottle, now ranges from 60 -100 (100 if I'm lucky) - when he was feeding well, he started to do longer stretches at night, now I'm back to night feeds.

Anyone else had this experience?? Plunket nurse has said as long as he is gaining weight its ok, but shes not the one who has to endure the tirade if he doesn't want his bottle, one day I had to leave him 5 1/2 hours without a decent feed as he just wouldn't accept the bottle....

I don't think dairy is offered untl after 6, or maybe even 8-9 months (baby brain can't remember that far back )

Re the lumpy formula, are you making it with cold water then heating or adding the formula to warm water? It's best to heat the water first then add the formula - saves on lumps. I also found stirring then shaking the bottle is a lot more effective, rather than shaking straight off (also helps with not getting froth).

We have always had S26 and never had any problems. I did a lot of research and asked heaps of FF mummies before making the switch from EBM to formula and that seemed hands-down to be the favourite (helps that it's pretty cheap too )

    Author: Jacobsmumma
Subject: 19695
Posted: 12 August 2009 at 2:45pm

Yay for starting this thread!! There’s hardly anything out there for bottle feeding mums.

I started off breastfeeding my son who’s just over 7 weeks old now and everything was going fine until the 4th day when my nipples started cracking and were bleeding after (and prob during each feed). One of the midwives at Birthcare picked up that he was tongue tied, which is why my nipples were so destroyed. I think my emergency c-section, losing approx 800mls of blood and his tongue tie prevented my milk from coming through properly till the 5th day too.

A day after checking out I took him to a tongue tie specialist and she snipped his frenulum (wasn’t painful apparently and he didn’t cry) and instantly his latch was fixed. I stopped b’feeding for a night or two to help them heal and during that time was put on antibiotics. When I returned to b’feeding everything was going well until I started experiencing pain in my nipples and boob after about 10mins of feeding and for an hour after feeding – turned out I had thrush in the breast prob caused by the antibiotics! So I started giving him more bottles instead of boob and now he’s predominantly formula fed with boob in the morning (when he takes it as I think he’s more used to the easy flow of the bottle and won’t stay on for too long).

I felt like I was a failure for not being able to successfully and 100% breastfeed my baby. Everywhere I looked there was that slogan ‘breast is best’ etc. I think at the end of the day the aim is to feed our babies regardless of how. My Dr (who’s a lactaction consultant too) also tried to push the breast is best and told me that bottle fed babies are more prone to obesity later in life!! Not sure how that works but the comment didn’t make me too happy.

We haven’t had a problem so far with the Karicare Gold although he does look like he’s pushing really hard to do a poo but they are pretty runny – not sure if that’s normal? We also use Avent bottles with the airflow teats. Haven’t tried any others yet and prob won’t. I try to burp him during a feed but he usually gets pretty upset that I’ve stopped his feeding, hehe so usually burp after. He seems to get them up pretty easily by himself now too.

Sorry I feel like I’ve written a novel!!
Soy milk (not formula) also has oils, sugar etc in it.
Better off w Rice milk, or water. Its funny how we have a need to drink something white and opaque.

    Author: KitKat
Subject: 19695
Posted: 24 June 2009 at 3:55pm

Last night wasnt as intense... and after the 'session of screaming' he had 2 lots of 4..5hr sleeps, prob so exhausted! who knows yet. We tried Rhuger.... he really liked it too- it was pretty cute seeing him lick his lips
I tried the TT closer to Nature teets- he didnt know what to do with it.... took in more air. SO- I reverted to the original ones.... oh and he was really good with the Avent anti colic one too- which was 2 holes not one. Similar teet shape though... So Ill stick with the shape Ive got- and work on the flow, and the remedies side of things..... I dont want to confuse his 'suck' IYKWIM

We also tried Gripe Water today- he spat it out, so we added a bit of F to it, and he took it....

Not sure whats working yet, will give things a couple of days, but will keep ya posted on results of my seemingly scientific experiment.

MW reccomended the S26 for looser stools (ie if baby has constipation) and Nurture for firmer stools (ie if bubs has runny poos) Something to do with the casien base v whey????

We amy try the Nurture stuff at some point.... We are still getting the lumps.... but if you let it sit for 5 (I know- baby doesnt agree with that idea) then give another good shake, oh and also use quite warm water to mix it with. Bit tedious isnt it.... they should make it as instant as poss.

Oh and- Weleda Colic Powder was reccomended to us too- will add to the list of stuff to try. Hope he has grown out of it by the time we try everything lol

Edited by KitKat
