So here is a new one for the group ...I think ...I nice dose of bronchitis! Yip ...that's me. No drugs...just a bed and a vat of hot lemon water. Miserable. Everytime I cough I worry about baby ...which MW says is at no harm ...try telling my brain that!

Echinacea v no echinacea in pregnancy ....there's another raging online debate that you just wish there was a definitive on. I'll do anything right now. Having said that ...if no better by Monday ...then it's off to the docs (reluctantly) but it does pose a new one ...

Who is thinking or has had the flu vaccine? Free for pregnant women and highly recommended by both the UK and NZ health boards. The version this year also includes the vaccine for H1N (birdflu). Let me know your thoughts please?

Morning [:)]

Sorry you're sick sjp_red! That is no fun, especially on the weekend. I'd say no to echinacea. I don't think there is a lot of evidence that it actually does anything anyway. Just stick to your fluids and lots of rest. Your baby is tucked away safe and sound, don't worry about that [:)]
The flu shot is recommended AND free for us?? Maybe I'll get it. Can't be too safe I say.

Feel better !!

We have our first scan and midwife appointment on Tues. I am a bit apprehensive to be honest. I haven't had a lot of symptoms and feel totally fine. I guess I'm just worried something has happened to the Bean and I'll be really upset if nothing shows up. Is this normal?? I'm probably just being a freak ...[:o]

Happy Sunday all [:)]

38yrs with a 4yr old. Been TTc for almost 2yrs now. Have just tried Letrozole but think I have luteal phase defect. 23ish day cycles.

ooooh sjb red, sounds so so crappy!! How bout a proper high potency Vit c with bioflavinoids (make sure it's not the ascorbic acid stuff, thats changes the levels of estrogen in your uterus and can cause miscarriage) I use Nutralife Ester c, can buy from warehouse, is pricey but worth it. recommended dosage is 1000 x3 a day but when your immune system under stress your tolerance goes way up and I have taken up to twice that a day. My family has had ZERO sickness since I discovered this great product 18 months ago! It's my secret weapon.

I did loads of research last year on the flu vaccine recommended to preg woman and discovered that not only does it have Thimerosal in it (mercury based preservative linked to autism and many other leaning/behav probs) but if you read the manufacturers own guide lines they all clearly state that they have not been tested for safe for use in pregnancy and basically have a disclaimer.

I was a bit scared of getting swine flu last year but just took lots of vit C & D and was smart about where I put myself and my daughter. And like I said we had no sickness in our house at all! Yipee!

Perhaps they have a vaccine out this year that is Thimerosal free??? This would pos be worth looking into

Morning!!

Quick question - are any of you ladies drinking coffee?

I was a big coffee drinker, but stopped as soon as I found out I was pregnant. A pregnant girl at my work is still drinking one a day.

Thoughts???

Poppy, I think it's ok to have a cup or 2 a day. But you can never be too safe so maybe switch to decaf? Or Milo
Just watch your coke, tea, energy drinks and chocolate intake too as they all have caffeine.

FYI ...sjb_red = squirtsmum (having user login issues :-)

Thanks bun_mum and nikau99 for the feedback. Going to see the doc on Monday and will come back with the advice he offers. Have two girlfriends in the UK - one preggy and the other preggy last year - both had the vac and both recommend it. Hmmm .

nikau99 ... will look into getting that Nutralife Ester C today ...Ive been taking a Nutralife C + Echniacea high dosage combo but got all nervous overnight about echinacea so am stopping that now.   Thanks for the tip.

Poppy ....I have one decent (flat white or espresso) cup of coffee a day (advice is no more than 1 of these or two filter / plunger cups) and anything else after that is decaf although they also recommend limiting decaf as there are still small amounts of caf in it. I need my one cup of coffee a day to feel human .... giving up that AND wine ...I'd go positively mental :-)

I am having the flu jab on Tuesday. I have it every year and I think it is a calculated risk given the consequences of getting the flu. The one year I didnt have the jab I had a very bad flu when in the UK (never confirmed as swine flu but we were suspicious it might have been as I couldnt get to the doctor), bed ridden and not able to eat or drink much for days/weeks on end which is not a good environment for a growing baby!

I never drank coffee, but has a cup of tea every now and again and quite a bit of coke zero. I have cut out all caffeine from my diet in general, but if I feel a craving, I will have either one cup of tea or one can of coke zero (if I can drink the whole thing!) I read somewhere early on that one caffenated drink a day is very safe, but I think anything over 3??? coffee's a day is not recommended. Damn... now I have a craving for a cup of tea...

Well I didn't find anything pants-wise at the warehouse, and after looking at the prices in egg maternity ($160 for one pair of maternity pants for work) I decided to put in an order from the UK. If anyone is interested dorothy perkins is having a sale on a number of maternity items and if you use the checkout code DPVIPE today you get an extra 25% off your total order. I've picked up two pairs of maternity jeans, two pairs of black work pants, two t shirts, a tunic for work and two pairs of maternity leggings for $200NZD including delivery. One pair of jeans was only $14!!! And I have to say the quality of their clothes is far better than anything I saw at Kmart or The Warehouse.

Cherrytree - is anyone else a member? We will be getting loads of baby stuff from them and taking advantage of our discounts!

Hi squirts mum! was wondering who sjb-red was :-)
here is some info I came across looking for that latest results of studies

"Mercury is known to cause serious harm, especially to fetuses and children because of their smaller size," said Lisa Sykes, president of the Coalition for Mercury-free Drugs (CoMeD), a non-profit group dedicated to removing mercury from medicine. "Why remove Thimerosal from pediatric vaccines only to inject it into pregnant women and children with recommended flu shots? They removed Thimerosal from other vaccines, so it should also be removed from flu shots."

Several other recent studies confirm the numerous dangers posed by mercury, including one recently published in the Folia Neuropathologica that links the toxin directly to autism (http://www.naturalnews.com/031678_m...). Mercury is also known to disrupt proper immune function, damage DNA, inhibit healthy embryonic development, and cause cancer.

Hey everyone, Just coming out of a 24 tummy bug ugh is about all I'll say about that! Lucky to have it on a Saturday I suppose as DH could kick into Mummy mode! MW told me to have no food for 24 hours (though I had half a piece of toast so baby didn't starve!)

I was thinking of having that flu jab but now you've all put me off it!

Don't drink coffee normally so not drinking it while pregnant but have heard that 1 a day is fine.

Back to lazing and regaining some energy!

The following is my opinion:
Lots of different pharmaceutical companies use different preservatives and fillers. It is always good to know exactly what you are putting into your body. From the research I've done I think I'll be going for Fluvax brand. See my research below with some links for further info. From my research below I couldn't find any ingredients that sounded like thiomersal type preservative in this year's NZ subsidised (free for us) flu vacs.

edited to add: I'm not getting the flu jab until 12 weeks on the recomendation of my nurse, GP and MW...I was so glad that all three had the same advice.

The following is research starting with the NZ MOH website and following links: (website included below)

MOH website links to inlfuenza.org.nz fr 2011 flu vac details which says "Fluvax® (CSL Biotherapies); Fluarix® (GlaxoSmithKline) are the two influenza vaccines that will be subsidised for the 2011 season."

Medsafe.govt.nz has details on each of these vaccines

FLUVAX says:

USE IN PREGNANCY: CATEGORY B2
"It is recommended that influenza immunisation be offered in advance to women planning a pregnancy, and to pregnant women who will be in the second or third trimester during the influenza season, including those in the first trimester at the time of vaccination.
An animal reproduction study has been conducted with CSL Influenza Vaccine. This study did not demonstrate any maternal or developmental toxicity."

Fluarix says:

"Adequate human data on use during pregnancy and adequate animal reproduction studies are not available. However, as with all inactivated viral vaccines, the risks to the
fetus are considered to be negligible. FLUARIX should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed.
Adequate human data on use during lactation and adequate animal reproduction studies are not available. There is no known contraindication in the use of FLUARIX during
lactation."

OY!! So much information!
DH said ' Sheesh, you're only having a baby, not building a spaceship and piloting it with 10 astronauts'.
I think his point was that having a baby is the most natural thing in the world and it's what our bodies are designed for. We shouldn't think or stress too much about it.
Get the shot if you want and just use common sense. Stay away from sick people, wash your hands, take care of yourself and you should be ok.
I'll probably get the shot. I'll see what the Doc and midwife say.
Relax and enjoy these growing humans inside of us

Good on you for doing the research squizzy As far as I was aware the Thimerisol was in last years H1N1 vaccine, which was the one all Preg women were advised to have by MOH.

All Doctors seem to follow the MOH guidelines

PumpkinBaker - good tip on DP's ...I had just filled up a basket online with M&S too ...but think there will be a few other items from DP that will help me through the next 6 months :-) Really frustrates me that we have such a limited selection here in New Zealand ...it's almost third world! Don't get me started on Egg and their ridiculous prices!!! Daylight robbery ...and that coming from a girl who willingly whips out the plastic in the spirit of retail therapy.

Some interesting views on the flu jab. Suspect this is one of those lessons us first time mums will be learning about being parents .... our next 21 years is going to be fraught with tough decisions :-)

Tinks .... awful for you to have a tummy bug at this stage!! Was it a virus you caught or something you ate?

I'm on an emotional rollercoaster at the moment. Bronchitis is just making me even more tired and snappy, hormones are raging and I think I've reached that milestone (6 months) of being in New Zealand where the homesickness is rearing its ugly head and Im regretting not having any of my old girlfriends around me to share this all with ...(they're not doubt breathing a sigh of relief :-) !!!

Incidentally ...anyone read 'Up The Duff!' ? Given to me as a gift - a refreshing, honest, 'exactly-how-I-feel' account of first time pregnancy. Very funny! Worth getting from the library if you can.

Thanks Nikau. Researching and risk assessing are fundamental parts of what I do so research is one of the easiest ways for me to make an informed decision.

Bum_mum thanks for you comments. I totally agree that having babies the most natural thing in the world and being pregnant is a healthy condition however there are a lot more decisions too make in the modern world and a lot of opinion and studies that show various things for and against all of them. Personally (as a researcher) I can't "relax" with information feed to me by a couple of qualified people.

At the end of the day we are the only ones who can make the final D on things like immunisation. We can take onboard the advice of our doctors and midwives but it's us who decides in the end and it can be a very difficult D when there is so much information out there.

Also immunisation is a very personal moral issue. Personally I am pro-immunisation and my sister is totally against it. I totally respect her D on that as she respects mine but it does lead to some great heated conversations.

I'm not getting a flu vaccine ... but then I've never had the flu in my life and never had the vaccine either so it's not something I worry about.

Science can never prove any drug is safe for pregnant women, because it's not ethical to conduct drug trials on unborn babies. All they can say is that no one has noticed any patterns of harm at this stage. Animal studies don't mean much because what is toxic to one species is not the same for another.

As for the caffeine question, I've read that consuming large amounts do increase your chances of miscarriage. But a 'large amount' was defined as 5+ cups of coffee a day. I'm a tea drinker but I went right off it for the first 10 weeks. Coffee smells incredibly good to me at the moment but I can't drink it anyway... bad side effects. Rooibos/Red Bush south african tea is a good alternative to black tea ... it tastes quite similar & you can put milk in it but it has no caffeine. Plus it's supposed to be full of minerals.

I was also given Up The Duff as a gift. It's very refreshing and funny but probably not a complete text for me (see my need for info in my last two posts). I like that it's inclusive of everyone (it doesn't assume that you have a husband by your side either which is refreshing). I really do enjoy reading it and do recommend it to others but it's not something I would have purchased myself.

I bought What to Expect When You're Expecting (NZ/AUS version) on recommendation from my sister-in-law and love it. It has heaps of info presented in an easy to read question and answer format. This mean you can read the question and if it doesn't apply to you, you can skip the answer part. However it sometimes uses non-everyday terms which means google sometimes has to be consulted.
