Hello all,
This is my first post here.
We have being TTC # 2 for seven months, which I know is not really that long compared to others, but the thing is we conceived our daughter the first month of trying. I take ovulation predictor tests and I've charted as well and I regularly ovulate on day 17. My luteal phase is only 10-11 days, which is a bit short. When I conceived my daughter it was 12. I've talked to my Dr and she got my hubby to do a sperm test, which I have not heard the results of, and I have to do the day 21 and day 4 blood tests this month.
Anyway, I guess I am just wondering if anyone is in the same boat? Or if anyone has a story to share - did # 2 take longer for you?
Thanks in advance

Hi guest,

Sorry it's such a hard journey at times isn't it! With DS I conceived within 2 cycles. When TTC #2 it took 2 cycles again. HOWEVER we suffered a missed miscarriage so had to start again for our number 2. This time it took 8 cycles. And was using OPK temping etc so knew timing etc was right but just wasn't happening. Finally cracked it last cycle but I was at the point of going back to dr too to look further as to why not. So yes it has taken longer to conceive #2. Don't ask me why though? Maybe overall health, stress etc. I recently left my job to look after DS more (as a mum should) and part time work for DH. He was feeling less stressed etc too and the pressure was off. Anyway don't know if it's that exactly but surely a small part.
I wish you all the best with your tests and luck for the coming cycles so you conceive your bubba x
P.s have you looked at lengthening your LP? I have heard b vitamins and evening primrose oil can help?

Thanks heaps for your reply!
Seven months ago I had a cycle that was weird. I thought I was pregnant because I was cramping heaps in the tww, except I was also aware it didn't feel quite like when I was pregnant the first time. But as I've never experienced that before I thought something was up. My period was late and really painful, also unusual. So I wonder if I had an early miscarriage or something that could be delaying things?
I have thought about trying to lengthen my luteal phase but I've been a bit apprehensive about the various options as things like excess B6 and Vitex come with some warnings. I haven't looked into evening primrose though, so I will do that.
I really hope it's just a matter of 'rolling the six' as my Dr put it. I'm thinking all sorts of things like blocked tubes, scarring, etcetera.
Your positive story is really good to hear!

Also I must add that the last cycle I did acupuncture. I had heard good feedback from others that it helped them so I had 3 sessions.Whether it had anything to do with my bfp or not I wont know but thought worth a mention.

This is so me at the moment!!!! We have been trying on and off for a year and the last two or three months I have been quite upset when I have got my period.
I have also found it does not help that it seems like everyone around me is getting pregnant or has just had a baby!!!!
My cycle was insane and has only just shown some sort of normality since I started taking Evening Primrose Oil (magical stuff) around 4 months ago.
We are blessed with a 2 year old but I know that she will be an amazing older sister and she is pretty obsessed with babies so that does not help.

Hi Mama P,
It's reassuring to know I'm not alone! I'm sorry you are going through this too. My daughter is two as well and I just didn't anticipate that there would be roughly a three-year age gap - IF we even get lucky soon.
Everyone around me is also falling pregnant. I feel quite frustrated when I hear another lot of happy news - and it makes me feel like a bad person. Rah!
When I ask my daughter what she'd like from Santa, she says, "Baby". Doh! I'm hoping she's just talking about a plastic one, cos nature ain't providing one this year, for sure
I'm thinking of taking some Evening Primrose Oil too, but just waiting on my blood test results first. Has it lengthened your luteal phase or made your cycles regular?

hi guest, just reading your posts and although I can't relate with the ttc #2, can relate to short luteal phase - I had a variable 11-14 day LP but would always spot 3 days prior to AF, so spotting started 8dpo some cycles. I took a complex vitamin b every day, and it seemed to make them 14 days with spotting starting on day 11 which was much better. I also took evening primrose oil but that was for EWCM and estrogen support days CD1 to OV. I didn't take EPO after OV. The b complex I took the whole cycle and continued til about 5 weeks pregnant, easing back to one every second day and then none, but try t really make sure I'm getting b vitamins in my diet because I read you shouldn't just go cold turkey.
I also used preseed - are you using this? And DH took zinc vitamins which help healthy sperm production.
Good luck!

Hi Apfel84,
Thanks for your post! Lots of good ideas there. I have been taking Blackmores Pregnancy Gold, as I did before I conceived my daughter, but perhaps I will look into these other vitamins instead to help my luteal phase and save the pregnancy vitamins for when I'm actually pregnant!
I always counted my period starting from when I started spotting about two days out, although I've recently read it's the first day of red flow. So based on that I guess my luteal phase is 12-13 days. But I've also read that spotting before a period is a sign of low progesterone anyway! So! Yes, I need to try and lengthen it.
We have been using Preseed this whole time - although I only did one month of using those applicator things and we just used it as a regular lube really.
This month, getting a bit desperate, I also tried the Robitussin trick as well...pretty sure it hasn't worked though.
DH is also on special spermy health tablets and his sperm test came back as normal.
Do you have a brand of B vitamins you recommend? Thanks!

I'd recommend going and seeing a naturopath who specializes in pre-conception care. They will want to meet and talk to you and hopefully your partner and discuss cycles, diet etc. then they will prescribe vitamins and supplements that will help you & let you know if there is any dietary changes you need to make. I think that everyone's suggestions are good but everyone is so different that you may end up spending a whole lot of money (& waste precious time) on things that are great for someone else but not what you need. So personally I'd spend the money on the expert opinion.

I highly recommend Loula George at Motherwell in Mt Eden! I have had miscarriages due to an antibody that attacks my thyroid. She ran a range of blood tests, discovered the issue and, to my GP's huge surprise, had helped me to more than halve their levels using diet and supplements. Then when I was TTC again she decided that the naturopathic remedies she was using to maintain a correct thyroid balance weren't working fast enough, so she asked the GP to prescribe me the western drug instead. I love that she will try and so things naturally, but if that doesn't work, is happy to use 'regular drugs' too.

Good luck - & join our TTC for 12+ mths group!

(PS - I haven't managed to get pregnant again yet since - but it's not her fault - I have not had any sperm 'on tap' for a long while so am currently in the TWW after IUI)

I never wanted a 3 year gap between kids either. I think that is why I am starting to get anxious. If we have a third we are going to start trying pretty quick after number 2 I would say. We are both not getting any younger

I found the Evening Primrose Oil helped to make my period a bit more regular. It was all over the show and at time would go from 34 days to 26!! To me that is a huge difference. Now I have been around 30 days for 3 or 4 months.

We have decided to give it another good go at getting pregnant this month and then if we don't fall pregnant we are going to both go to the Dr and get some tests done. I went to the Dr a few months back and he was a bit of a dick about it all. I think I came across as being a bit too casual about the whole situation.

Hi yes we are TTC our second too.. my DD is 4 in january and we have been ttc since she was 20 months (so 2 years ttc now..) in feb we got our positive pregnancy test but sadly lost our boy at 11 weeks. now im on the waitlist for fertility associates so who knows from here! a couple of days spotting right before your period is due is normal. its when you have spotting throughout your luteal phase (after you ovulate to your period) for no good reason. If AF is coming its just because its starting up slowly.  keep taking EPO, keep having lots of lovin and hopefully everything will come back clear. I know as much as anyone that the wait to get your bub is horrible. but 7 months is a very normal timeframe for it to take even if there is nothing wrong with you at all. good luck! and fingers crossed you get your little one a sibling soon xxx

Thank you for your replies, everyone.

Soda - I'm really sorry for your loss and also that you've been on this journey for two years now. That's really, really tough.

Isn't it so frustrating that our bodies can work right the first time and then unexpectedly not the second time? I'm a bit of a control freak and, Lordy, it is driving me round the bend that I can't just make a pregnancy happen. It has been mentioned to me that I should just forget about it and it'll happen, but how, how, howwww do you do that?!

Mama P - Stink that your doctor was a dick. I saw a dick doctor at first too (not my regular doctor). I told her I was worried I had low progesterone and she just looked a bit weird at me and said, "Why would you have low progesterone?" (I don't know?! Aren't you the Dr?!) I'm also fairly certain she didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I mentioned the words 'luteal phase', but in the interest of saving face she pretended she did.

Pepi-bebe - A naturopath sounds like a good idea. I will see what my blood tests say and go from there. If my doctor can't find anything wrong and things don't happen naturally then I'll do whatever I need to get some answers.

One thing is for sure, I'm going to be so incredibly grateful if I get pregnant a second time. With the first being so easy I think I probably took a lot for granted, even though I was aware how lucky I was at the time. I'll even rejoice each time I have to sick up in the toilet with morning suckiness. I'll even love every harrowing second of pushing that baby out. Promise!

Hi all. We have just started ttc #2.dd is almost 10 months :). I'm sorry I don't have much insight to add to helping with ttc as with dd I had only come off depo and hadn't had a chance to follow cycles or temp or anything like that. But have been taking note of all you guys say lol just come off depo again. And trying to think positive and just letting things be. Ttc is so hard!

Our DS1 was a lovely surprise, and he has just turned 3 last month. Last night I got my BFP after 6 cycles of Clomid. My cycle never came right after I had my son, and I had spent 6 months on Depo back then. My cycles were between 7-12 days long and I didn't ovulate at all. After an op, going back on the pill, and it still not being back to normal my OB/GYN started me on Clomid. So while we have only tried for 6 months I have been on the road to sorting my body out so we COULD try for 18 months now. I wanted 2.5-3 years between kids but there will be 3.75 years assuming this one sticks. I'm a bit gutted about that but also stoked I'm finally pregnant again! One thing the specialist told me was that the Clomid only put me back on a level playingfield with women who OV naturally, and said 6-12 months is absolutely normal. I hope your BFP comes quickly xxx

Thanks for your posts - and congrats Wimble! That's really awesome. It's great to hear some happy news.

I got my progesterone blood test results back and they were 41.5 - which is good. BUT my luteal phase for this cycle was just 8 days - my worst yet. So I've made an appointment with Fertility Associates for next week. Straight to the big guns. I don't want to keep fluffing around with my doctor, who told me I just need to keep trying for a few more months and that my luteal phase will just "kick in" when I get pregnant. Pretty sure something's not right (and the Fertility Associates nurse agrees) and I need to know what that is before I can treat it.

BTW, if anyone's interested, you can have a free 15-minute phone consult with the Fertility Associates nurses, which I found great. They are clued up and really kind. It was nice to be taken seriously!
