Topic: Where do i start? Posted: 19 September 2014 at 11:41am |
Im a 28y Male.
Im asking for advice, because i really dont know where to start, I dont want to just go to doctors after docters only find out i should have went to a specific doctor first, if you get what I mean.
I will admit i know next to nothing about this
Basically my girlfriend of over 6ish or so years want to try for a baby. We have never used protection and still nothing.
I think the issue is with me, because during our 6 years we had a 6month break, and 1 had slept with around 6 girls without protection (I did constant STD checks, and came clean everytime) yet none of them got pregnant
Now me and my girlfriend are running strong for over a year and a half and we really want to try for a baby, but we dont know where to start? We aint the richest in the plot, but am pretty much keen to do what it takes to have a baby
I dont know what these forums are of i am going to get hated for this, but i hope someone could share some light on what steps and where can i go?
I am in the Waikato area, but auckland is not an issue to get to if its cheaper / better access to more options.

There are probably quicker steps to take (I know there's a fertility clinic in Hamilton) but I'd go to your GP and tell them you've been trying to have a baby for the last year and a half. What's a little white lie if it gets the ball rolling?
Generally the docs will advise you to try for a year before seeking help, but given you've been together 6 years and never knocked her up, I'd say it'd be best to seek help soon.
In the meantime, stop smoking (if you do), cut down the drinking (if you do) and research vitamins and minerals needed for healthy sperm. Try from day 11 in her cycle to about day 16 (yup, a week of sex!) if she has a regular 28 day cycle.
Good luck, I hope it happens for you guys soon!

If you go to Fertility Associates you can get your sperm tested for around $90 and get the results the same day. You can do this casual (don't need to be seeing them for anything prior) Just give them a call and arrange a time. Its a quick and easy way to find out if your 'guys' are the issue :-)

I think you're amazing as a man for taking steps to investigate this unprompted. Basically your gp can order the tests then whatever they find from that will be your next step. My partners test showed zero sperm (they didn't realise that we were ttc and congratulated him on his successful vasectomy haha) so we were given a referral to see the fertility ppl thru public health but we jumped the gun and paid for the appt privately. Definitely look into vitamins. Our specialist said if you can cut out environmental factors (smoking, drinking, etc) then low sperm can be reversed as it takes this for change to happen. In our case it's likely something he was born with. Good luck!

There is a multi vitamin made in NZ called Vitamenz. The main things are zinc and selenium. Both of you eating a healthy diet will help to make sure you are creating the best sperm and she is creating the best environment for growing a baby. It takes 100 days for your body to produce new sperm. So take the vitamins every day consistently. It will take 3-4 months until there is new healthy sperm. Your girlfriend needs to take folic acid. Her gp can prescribe this for cheap.
The gp would be a good first stop. You'd be more likely to get publicly funded help if you go to the gp and state you've tried for 1 1/2 years without success. Timing is key. If she hasn't been tracking her cycle she needs to start tracking the days. The fertile window is small and it can take a healthy couple around to 9 months trying. Those other girls may have been on the pill or got the morning after pill so all could still be ok. A trip to the gp will be good as soon as you can. Good luck

| Thanks :) May I ask why you prefered to go privately? Was it a timing matter? Was the cost quite steep going private?

Once we'd had our test result and were referred the wait time was 5-6mths so we decided to pay for our first couple of specialist appts which were approx $200 for the first and $140 I think for the next one. We're fortunate to be a position where we could afford the cost so I realise it's not an option for all. Basically I wanted to get on the waiting list for whatever treatment ASAP as waits for ivf is up to 12mths. Hope that helps :)

I dont mind forking out 200 etc then 140 if its only 2 - 3 appoinments? But if I have 10+ to think about it that may be different :) I am pretty much like you, I want to get onto this ASAP So basically, GP first, and then decide if i want to go public or Private funding? If you go private, that means you can get on the waiting list faster? is that right? of if u go private, you get the whole IVF treatment done faster to? (If its needed :)) If you are in the waikato can you recommend a good private place?

So yep gp first to test sperm then if result shows further investigation needed you can get referred to a fertility specialist. If you pay for your first couple appointments and it turns out you qualify for public funding you can switch to public which will pay for your treatment but there's a waiting list (a long one). You can be on the public list and still pay for your own treatment in between. However you may not even have to go down any of those paths just yet so one step at a time.
The fertility clinic I deal with is fertility associates in Wellington am pretty sure they have a clinic in Hamilton too.

Fertility Associates is the only private fertility practice in the Waikato as far as I'm aware, with a current IVF waiting list of 20 mths for public treatment (so best to get checked right away if this is a path you end up needing to take). You can go straight to them privately, with appointments if you want, with $200 for first appointment (plus tests if needed) and $105 for followup appointments (they're cheaper than elsewhere partly due to long waiting lists).
Obviously first test is to get sperm analysis done though, since you're concerned, and that can tell you if you have any issues on that side or not, so whether you need to see a specialist.
