Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum and thought I would say hi.
I'm nearly 10 weeks pregnant and at the moment living in Sydney but moving back to Auckland to live in the next month or so.
I need advice on finding a midwife, I'm having the baby at National Womens, can someone please explain the difference to having a domino midwife (hospital one) or an independent mid wife?? Is one better than the other?

If you have had a great Auckland midwife pls feel free to let me know!
I just hope I haven't left it too late but I didn't realise you needed to book in so early - esp at Xmas time!

Thanks heaps

I have a brilliant midwife, she's delivered 3 of my babies and all going well is set to deliver the fourth in a few weeks, plus I've sent a few people to her and they've mostly found her good too. I can PM you her details if you like, she's based in Glen Innes.

As for the difference between a domino and an independent, the domino midwives are hospital based but work pretty much the same as independent midwives in that you see that same person at each appointment and that person is at the birth and does postnatal care as well. They work pairs/teams so if your midwife isn't available for any reason you will see her partner, same as an independent.

I personally preferred to go with an independent midwife, but friend's who have been with the dominos have found them just as good.

The only difference is if you go with the hospital "team" of specialists and midwives, in which case you see whoever is on duty at the time and there's far less continuity of care. Most people would only do that if they had a high risk pregnancy tho.

I had a fantastic midwife for my first and am using her again for my second. She is bonded to Birthcare Parnell though and only does National Womens births if you are transferred from Birthcare.

Let me know if you want her details.

I had a wonderful midwife but she is based in West Auckland and I am not sure if she delivers at National Womans but PM me if you want her details. There is a huge list in the OhBaby directory, or you could try the http://www.yellowpages.co.nz - Yellow Pages or National Womans may be able to provide you a list of independant midwives if that is what you are after.
All the best

I had an awsome midwife based in central Auckland - in Parnell .Her name is Toni Vail and she's very straightforward, practical and experienced and non judgmental. I had a clear idea of the type of birth I wanted and she was supportive of me to the fullest - even though she had a few good strong suggestions of her own (like using a private anaethnatist if the wait was too long for a hospital one)
She delivers at National Womens and works with Jan Clifton who is also wonderful and, if I were to be honest, probably is a bit more sort of maternal than Toni. Toni is no-nonsense, Jan's a bit more "soft".
had a great birth and a great pregnancy thanks to Toni. I'd recommend either Toni or Jan to you in a hearbeat.
Good luck!!!

Hello!

I've just joined Oh Baby so that I can PM you to find out the midwife who you've recommended name is.

Sorry I couldn't work out how to PM so I think this will be public?

Perhaps you could PM me back.

Thank you so much!
