Hi Guys, I just found out that I am pregnant a couple of days ago, I've had two blood tests; first one (Tues) it was 42 and second one (Thurs) it was 124- so it has doubled but am still worried that these levels are low....

Can anyone reassure me with their HCG results that are similar and had positive outcomes?

Hi, it is the doubling that is really important, not the actual number.
This is the normal ranges, so your level is well within the normal range

3 weeks LMP     5 - 50 mIU/ml
4 weeks LMP     5 - 426 mIU/ml
5 weeks LMP     18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
6 weeks LMP     1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
7 - 8 weeks LMP     7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
9 - 12 weeks LMP     25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
13 - 16 weeks LMP     13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
17 - 24 weeks LMP     4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
25 - 40 weeks LMP     3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml

Oh and how often should I be getting these levels checked? I've been on clomid for 10 cycles and TTC for 23 months- I would get my levels checked everyday if I could

Not sure about the difference in IU/L and the chart I got, but if you google hcg levels then there are millions of sites with the ranges, they vary slightly depending on where you look but all roughly the same and you might be able to find on IU/L

In a normal pregnancy they don't check for these levels. With my first pregnancy I didn't have them checked at all, with my second i did cos I had a neg test at doctors so he did a blood test and then cos my level was really low we checked them 2 days later and unfortunately it had barely risen so I had a few more done and then a scan and long story short I had a miscarriage, then I got pregnant a 3rd time but only had one HCG done at 7 weeks cos I was having some pain and was very paranoid cos of the miscarriage, but I also had a scan so the HCG test was a bit redundant really and everything was fine.

If you are really worried and would like them checked then they might do them weekly for you, but you could also ask about an early scan which will tell you far more. If you wait till 7 weeks then they can see a heartbeat and after that it is very rare to lose baby, I think it drops to only 1-2%. You can see a heartbeat earlier than 7 weeks but also sometimes can't even though all can still be ok so my doc said wait till 7 weeks then you will definitely see one if things are progressing properly.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! - your levels look completely normal and are doubling well which is a good sign. You can ask for a referral (either from GP or midwife) for an early scan (7weeks - give or take) for peace of mind too if you like....

Just wanted to say congrats, and your levels look very normal!! These were mine:
HCG @ 4W2D = 80
HCG @ 4W4D = 216 (Doubled every 1.4D)
HCG @ 5W2D = 2351 (Doubled every 1.4D)
HCG @ 5W4D = 4948 (Doubled every 1.9D)
HCG @ 6W1D = 15671 (Doubled every 2.4D)
HCG @ 7W0D = 43746 (Doubled every 4.1D)
HCG @ 7W2D = 49325 (Doubled every 11.5D)
And I have just had my NT scan and bubba is alive and well!
After one MC, I was rather paranoid this time around, and found http://www.americanpregnancy.org/duringpregnancy/hcglevels.html - this site and http://www.baby2see.com/preconception/hcg.html - this site useful for reading about HCG levels and calculating my doubling time..
It does say that the results from an US is more reliable than HCG after 6ish weeks (I would wait till 7 like the others have said) and once your levels reach 2000 then an US is better than HCGs. If you do get them done weekly, dont forget the level off between weeks 8 and 10 and then start to decline a bit, so dont worry! As you can see mine dropped off a bit earlier than that at 7 weeks... GL hun, I hope you have a h&h 8 months!!

Oh I also found my Dr was more than happy to do what ever was needed (weekly HCGs or early US) to put my mind at ease so I wasnt stressing. Your Dr or MW should be the same

Congrats Mindy! I am also preg with a clomid baby. Similar number of cycles to you too. I know, like you, how anxious I was about the hcg levels, especially after a prev m/c. My Dr checked them at 4 wks, a couple of days later, then a week after that, and then again a week later just to make sure they were doubling (I asked for the last one just for my own piece of mind, he was already satisfied they were "rising beautifully").

If it makes you feel better be pushy to have things checked until you are satisfied. Once you have had a scan your mind will be much more at ease also.

I know exactly how you feel especially when just conceiving is so difficult. Hang in there, the levels you posted are doubling as they should, and I think being anxious is part and parcel of being preg. Even at 13 weeks I still find plenty to worry about.

Thanks Monie and other ladies! I think i will see my FA specialist on Monday and organise weekly HCG tests. It is really hard, I'm sure with alot of the other ladies I'm going to the toilet reg to check for bleeding and over analysing every twinge and cramp, had bad cramps to begin with. i think another one of my concerns is that I got my BFP at 3wks5d, 2 days before Af was due. now af was due 2 days ago I'm still expecting it to show up
I was struggling with the 10 cycles of clomid but not sure how I would cope with a loss- still trying not to dwell on that and really really just want to enjoy my pregnancy looking forward to the morning sickness even though I'm sure I'll change my mind about that when it shows up

Me too. Was your specialist Dr Ngan Kee?

And about the checking for bleeding every time you go to the bathroom - been there done that too!

One of the early changes that happened for me was the area around my nipples went really big (sorry if TMI!), so I found myself also checking down my bra at the same time just to make sure this hadnt disappeared ......Oh dear!

yeah it was ngan kee. Did you go through him or your g.p? I find ngan kees bedside manner could do with some work but he is a very good dr. My areola are big too, my biggest concern though is right sided groin pain, very scary. Did Ngan kee do serial hcg's with you?

Yes we were seeing Ngan Kee. I just got annoyed because I felt like he didnt listen to me. Kept telling me I wasn't ovulating because my day 21 progesterone level never was high enough to indicate ovulation. I had all the other signs and symptoms of ovulation except the 'proper' progesterone level. We have conceived twice now on cycles where based on my day 21 bloods he told me I didnt' ovulate! Of course the pregnancy won't continue if the ovaries don';t make enough progesterone (which mine werent) so I went straight to my GP the next day, he did a bit of research and said its worth trying progesterone supplementation for the first 12 weeks. So here I am 13 weeks later and still pregnant, which I firmly believe I wouldnt' be if I had listened to Ngan Kee who told me I should expect to miscarry with such a low progesterone level. Very frustrating considering the thousands we have paid to see a specialist.

Ngan Kee didnt do any hcg's on me I had to organise them through my GP who is absolutely wonderful

Sorry just realised what a rant that was.   But that's our story. Unfortunately we didnt find FA a positive experience at all. But at least I don't have to worry about that anymore

Also Mindy between weeks 4 and 5 I had niggly little aches and pains in the groin region too. Probably like you are, I was worried I was about to start bleeding, but from what I've read I think these often happen when the fertilized egg burrows deeper into the uterine lining implating itself there. Some women also get some spotting as this happens.

I never thought that he listened to me at all either. A lot of the ladies on clomid pill popper thread had monitored cycles, that was never offered to me and I would have been happy to pay.

A lot of people seem to be having the pains in the groin, last night they were particularly uncomfortable, they have disappeared today so far which relieves me as if ectopic I'm sure the pain would be constant

I really want to enjoy this pregnancy but I just cant yet.....

I know what you mean about wanting to enjoy being preg. I have struggled with this. I have found that my husbands parents are really excited (first grandchild) and have been from very early on, but we have both just been sooo cautious not to get our hopes up too much the past 13 weeks. Even now as I am about to stop taking the progesterone as by now the placenta should have taken over progesterone production from the ovaries, I am really scared as this is kind of like the final hurdle and then we will know that we are actually going to have this baby, whereas they just assume it's a sure thing. I know it's just self-preservation on our part incase the unthinkable does happen.

After 10 cycles you must have been on quite a high dose? I was on 200mg which was the practicle maximum. Did you have side effects?

No no side effects, I only went up to 100mgs as I was ovulating but the sperm wasnt meeting the egg.
