Anyone had this? Apparently I have been slightly high since 2007 (186 - normal is 150), then at around 7 weeks preg I was 282, now at 12 weeks I am 351. Going to do another test in 2 weeks time. Has anyone had this issue? There is not much on the net about high iron, all about low!

have you been tested for, or have a family history of haemochromatosis? (excuse the spelling it might not be exactly right)

that is an illness which can cause elevated ferratin. My BF's dad has it so she is at risk of getting it herself and is going to get tested.

I've been told high iron levels can be connected to PCOS...

haemochromatosis will make iron levels increase that much if you are taking a lot of iron filled supplements.
as instead of absorbing 25% (normal level) you will be absorbing 50% and because of being preg and not having AF's where your body naturally dropping iron it can build up fast.

DP has it.

its a DNA blood test with gene study to check for it.
Drs will try and not do it cos its expensive.

if you do have it you donate blood regulatly once you have reached menopause and its kept under control with AF as your body knows to get rid of it
(women with Haemo tend to have heavier and longer AFs)

Yes tested for haemotomocrosis and it's not that, and also tested for liver function and not that. IN 2 weeks they are going to test again for thyroid as could be that, but I have symptoms of a dodgy thyroid so I doubt its that. I'm having no iron supplements, only had 3 elevit pills this preg as I found them too big to swallow, esp with the MS!!
What is PCOS?
So Dr said it could be some kind of infection, but if it's been slowly creeping since 2007 and now well over half it is a worry what is going on, and I have no answers!

Poly cycstic Ovary syndrome

I doubt its an infection since its been slowly increasing for years. Hope u get some answers soon.

I thought PCOS could result in higher iron levels as AF is usually so infrequent.... but if you were regular I doubt this would be the cause ... but I could be wrong....

Yeah I have read up on PCOS now and I def don't have those symptoms, or any or the other symptoms for the other things that the high ferritin tests can signify its all so mysterious and weird and frustrating!

My iron levels were 300-400 so very high. So I definately didn't take any supplements, not that I could as I was very ill with MS anyway

My midwife said it isn't common.   Anyway, she called the specialist and talked thorugh my results etc, they did another test and as it was similar they were not concerned as it wasn't increasing more and being a steady result. Basicly they said it could be that I normally have high levels anyway.
I will be interested when I get PG next time to see what the levels do.

I agree there isn't alot around on high iron.

Good luck with your next results CJsays

thx pikelets glad to hear it was non eventful 4 you. Did you have a slightly prem or underweight baby? That's all I can find on the net re it. Have your levels gone down now?

CJ, I was pretty much the same as pikelets. 380 or so at first bloods, then it dropped to about 315 by 28 weeks. No-one raised it as an issue, although we did establish that my diet contained quite high iron content, and happened to be very favourable to iron uptake as well.

My daughter was born at 41+3 and a healthy 7lb 14oz - so pretty much average weight given she was 10 days overdue.

I'm also interested to see what my levels are next time I get pg, given I'm hoping to still be BF DD when that happens.
