Hi there,

Has anyone had or know someone who has specifically gone to Thailand to take advantage of cheap dental treatment?

Having just been handed a potentially $18k quote from the dentist, I'm looking at all my options

Thanks

I haven't... but I am going over to get a boob lift next year because it's just sooooo much cheaper. I discussed it with my GP and what he said to me makes perfect sense. If you go somehwere where they do a lot of it you'll be fine. Just do your research, look for recommendations

My brother had to have treatment done when he happened to be in Thailand, he said it was cheap as chips, but when he got back to NZ (like 2-3 months later) the tooth fell apart and he had to pay huge money here to get it all repaired.

Funny, my mom is in Thailand RIGHT NOW with a friend who is getting dental treatment. I don't know about the tooth side of things but she's been going in everyday for some work in the morning and out for shopping in the arvos. I can ask her specific questions when she gets home on sunday if you have any :)

I was at a seminar last Saturday and there was a lady from a medical tourism agency speaking (it was a business seminar so was rather random), but the prices she was quoting for work were just insane, a 10 day holiday, plus hospital stay and medical work sometimes under half of what it costs just to get the surgery in nz. Anywho, not sure if you're interested in going through a company like that but from what she was saying they only use the best hospitals and surgeons etc in Thailand.. guess it might be a bit more piece of mind? They also have dentists/doctors in nz who do pre/post checkups with you if you want it.

Not sure if its your thing, but this is their website
http://www.restoredbeautygetaways.com/ - here    - just another option, better to be safe than sorry!

I haven't had work done in Thailand, but have had some done in Egypt, China and Mauritius (now there is a great destination!). Just make sure you do your research about the dentist - check their qualification and ask to speak to other clients (preferably ones from NZ).

I didn't have dental work as such but got my teeth whitened with no issues. Probably doesn't really help you though!

WOW thanks for all the replies

JD... did you go through a company to organise it for you, or did you book it all yourself? Are you happy with the quality of work? Did you feel confident in the expertise of the dental practice you used? Which dental practice was it? How long did you spend out there?

I need 3 x crowns of my molars ASAP, and there's a chance I may also need 3 x root canals due to them being heavily filled and very close to the nerve.
I big bulk of the cost is having a plate and braces fitted. Not sure I'd be able to get this done overseas as it's ongoing treatment over a couple of years.

Bowie, I'd love to hear about her experince and whether she recommends it.

Meggls...thanks for the link. I'd heard a comany like this mentioned on TV, but couldn't remember their name. I like the fact they have dentists in NZ for follow care. Will have a closer look at that site.

Stay away from getting any orthodontic work done overseas. You pay for it but any NZ dentists will still charge you for any follow up visits (which you will need heaps of)
Personally I'd stay away from any dental work overseas but I am possibly too biased working in the industry myself.

If you choose do go down that road, make sure you ask for copies of xrays and all treatment notes to take back to NZ so your local dentist has something to go by should you have problems at a later stage.

Can I also just say $18k for 3 crowns, root canal treatment and ortho is actually not too bad. Will your general dentist in NZ be doing the ortho work for you?

My dentist said he'd refer me to some other dude, who he's thinks is one of the best. He said that he's had 2 x patients with similar overbites to mine (only my 4 x molars meet) and both decided not to have the surgery as they were happy with the results from the plate and braces.

Could I ask you to clarify your comment about treatment "overseas".

We were discussing this a few weeks ago as I have quite bad teeth in terms of needing filling (about 17 teeth need fillings) and we were quoted about 2-3k depending. I had one tooth where the filling kept falling out... $500 each time so in the end we just pulled the tooth.

A holiday would be lovely though!

My mum also knows a couple of people who have gone and had it done as well as surgeries too. No complaints.

Oh definitley try to avoid having surgery to correct this. There is practice in Newmarket and they do very conservative/less invasive treatment and see a lot of adult patients for orthodontic work.

And sorry, by overseas I was refering to Thailand in this case.

We just got back from Thailand 2 weeks ago & I had researched stuff to do over there on the Tripadvisor forums & found a dentist that got repeatedly good reviews. So I booked in there for a teeth clean & was happy with it. It's the dentist inside the Patong Merlin resrt in Phuket. Wish i'd seen them earlier in the holiday as they said I need to replace a crown which over there costs about half or 1/3 price of NZ. Think the dentist in Thailand quoted me $18,000Baht which is $700NZ or just under. My teeth cleaned & scaled over there came to NZ $60

Hubby & I have decided next time I need dental work we will just go back to Thailand. If you search the thailand forum's on Tripadvisor search for Dr Joy and Dentist Patong Merlin.

Oh and if you searh Bangkok forums you are bound to find more dentists there, it's just not a very nice relaxing place to stay!

I didn't go through a company, I just organised it myself. I went for about 2 weeks by myself. Because I was getting crowns, I need to be there for at least a week and I also wanted to have time at the end of the proceedures to go and check out Phuket. I needed two root canals, plus posts put in (something for the crown to attach to since my teeth were so filled with filling) and 2 crowns.
I was very happy with the quality of work I had. They had a different dentist for each of the different stages. The different dentist specialised in certain areas and some of them were lecturers at the university.
They were very kind and gental, but they did have some weird things...like the bib thing they put on you actually covers your whole face with just a circle for your mouth. I didn't like the feeling of that over my face so they were happy to adjust it for me. There were lots and lots of westeners there getting alsorts of work done. I had this done about 5 years ago and still no issues whatsoever with the work they did.

I went to Bangkok Smile Dental clinic. They have two branches and most of my work was done at Sukhumvit 21 which was not far from where I was staying. (one stop on the mrt or about 30 mins walk). I stayed at Classic Place which was cheap as chips (about $25-30 a night). Im not sure what condition the hotel is in now since I went about 5 years ago now. The rooms were very spacious and it was literally 2 mins walk to the mrt. There was also a nice massage place next door that I would go to after treatments to cheer myself up. You pay for the massage (cheap as) and you get free internet after. It was cheaper than getting 15 mins internet time at the hotel.

All up, the entire trip including flights, accom, food, dental treatment, sightseeing etc cost about the same as the dental treatment alone her in NZ. I also lost a bit of weight there since it was hot and I drank so much and ate so much fresh fruit. They have these little stands on the side of the road with fresh fruit. They would cut up a watermelon, pineaple or whatever right in front of you and it would cost about 10c. It was safe to eat because they were cutting it right in front of you...it wasn't just sitting there. They have the fruit sitting on ice and it is delicious!

Let me know if there is anything else you want to know :-)

Where in NZ are you? The dentists at the Wellington People's centre are relatively cheap - about $1000 for a root canal and $700 for a crown

I looked into it as I have had lower braces and 4 titanium implants plus the associated crowns but in the end decided against it. I have heard of people having great results but have also heard nightmare stories. I would probably get my crowns replaced there but I wouldn't have had the implants or get a root canal done.

I do need veneers on my front teeth now and would consider getting those done there if I managed to wing a holiday to Thailand anytime soon. Sadly with the cost of dental work here I can see that they just won't get done.

For those of you who had crowns done overseas, what warranty did they put on them? (i.e what happens if the porcelain chips which can happen and is often under warranty)

And also what happens if things don't go as planned, for example if a tooth needs a root canal and is infected and needs further treatment or antibiotics before a crown can be placed on it? Is there time put aside for these things?

For my crowns and root canal, there was time between the root canal and the crown being done to treat any infection. It takes about 5 - 7 days to make the crown anyway.
They do have warranty, but you would have to travel back to Bangkok to get it fixed. Crowns do have a life span, but that is for anywhere you get it done. You have a choice of what sort of crown you want. I had porcelain fused to metal which was cheaper.

My dad had some implants done in KL. He travels frequently so it worked out well. For an implant, there is quite a while between treatments because you have to wait till the titanium fuses to the bone (I think).

Right.

There was good and bad - apparently this woman would go in the morning for dental and have the afternoons free to recover/sightsee. She had a filling the first morning and the second morning she found out it had been done by a trainee and wasnt right and the proper dentist had to redo it. But that was the only downside. She had a whole bunch of fillings, veneers, a bridge made all for $800ish NZD. Apparently she refused other work such as braces and full veneers (because they would remove her teeth and she would have to spend a day teethless before having the new ones fitted so maybe they didnt do temporary ones!) but better being teethless in thailand then at home where you'd run into everyone you know i reckon! Sounds like she had fun and has returned to NZ healthy and all.

I had my bottom implants done several years before my top ones. The bottom ones had crowns put on straight away but the top I had to wait several weeks (maybe even a couple of months) before the permanent crowns could be fitted.

my friend went to this company http://www.facebook.com/DestinationBeauty

for a breast lift/implant and tummy tuck last year I cant remember how much she paid but had a great time and very pleased with the results.

Good luck with your choice, at the end of the day many of us would spent $18k on a new car, whats so bad about spending $?$? on your teeth, eating is every day part of our life and you need to be comfortable!

I got lasik vision down in chc last year at $4750 and love it, felt a bit selfish spending that kinda money, but havent looked back. Id spend $$ on my teeth if I need to at any stage. I got a root canal done in chc for $750 with the drugs alone for the sedation costing $140. worth it.

A couple of years ago df and I were in Phuket and his bridge got knocked out ( by me in a blonde moment ) so we went to a big clinic there and they were amazing,it was a lovely facility, and very clean (unlike the rest of Thailand!) and for about $50 they replaced the bridge, and it's been much better than his previous one, never had any problems.

I recommend

Like others have said, just do your research and try and get recommendations for specific places. Good luck!

Thanks so so much for all the replies

Sorry I haven't responded again sooner... I was struck by a horrid tummy bug

OK, so I've now had an email from a dentist friend, who kinda says the same thing as the other dentist, expect he said that you can't do the root canal after the crown, without damaging the crown. Also, he'd be tempted to use gold, as it's stronger, even though it doesn't look pretty, but due to my overbite...

Soooooo now I think the decision I've really got to make is:
* Do I get my jaw fixed for my overbite?

As far as I can tell, if I'm going to get this kinda work done, it's better before the crowns.

*sigh* I don't know what to do. I'd really love a great smile and to fix my overbite, but I guess it's the cost which is holding me back.

I'm now also looking at America, as you get those places which specialise in full mouth restoration. That said, I don't want veneers.

Sem... it was a chap in Newmarket that this dentist would refer me to. Said he was ace

With regards to waranty? I had no idea that ANY dentists offered a waranty? Maybe if in broke within a few weeks I guess they'd be sympathetic, but after 12months?

Geez, that's a good price. I was thinking it was about $8K for some reason.

Will start saving (though have to get DH's braces done first , which we are definitely getting done in Auckland ). Still, as you said, teeth are quite crucial really, and I would prefer they don't all fall out when he's 60

Milliemoo- you definitely want to get the root canal before the crown. I had to have a root canal due to an infection on one of my front teeth. Both my top front teeth are capped due to an accident when I was a teenager. About a week after the root canal I noticed a crack in my crown- I had to have it replaced. The dentist wouldn't pay for it as it was 'wear and tear'.

I had a new crown put on and this one comes with a 10 year warranty

10 years! That's good

This is the confusing thing... I don't need root canal work just now, it's the process of removing the filling and inserting a crown (or another filling) that could cause the need for RC work, due to my molars already being heavily filled *very* close to the nerve

I'm now leaning towards ignoring my molars for the moment (which don't cause me any pain) and concentrating on my overbite, which in the long term will decrease the pressure on my molars and hopefully any crowns that get fitted, should last a long time.

Ugh why does dentistry have to be so damn expensive!!! No wonder we all leave it to the point where pulling them out is an attractive option!

I thought my quote was high but doesnt come close to this so I think I'll stop complaining!

Good luck with your decision xxx

With that quote, I'll be running away to look for way cheaper options as well! :) Yes, Thailand is a great place for cheaper dental treatments. I've been to Thantakit International in Bangkok thrice(OP, filling and root canal) and was always happy with my visits. The dentists were professional and they've been trained abroad. It's also great that they don't continually upsell. Be very careful in picking a dental clinic overseas. The great part is that you'd get to travel and explore the country's attractions. Always do your research first.

I have been to Thailand and also India as a part of my dental tourism. I must say India leads the race for economical and best treatment when compared to Thailand. I had visited http://www.dentalimplantcostguide.com/india/" rel="nofollow - Dentzz dental for a root canal treatment and was very effective and economical.

As well I am considering dental treatment abroad. I completely agree with Kesha162258, and I am checking out all possible sources of info: chatting boards and forums, clinics websites and dedicated sites (dentalimplantsfriends with tons of info, stats and prices), info provided by medical tourism agents (placidway), etc.
