Topic: milk supply help please Posted: 23 September 2010 at 9:01pm |
I am currently under a bit of stress and as can be expected my milk supply seems to be getting affected.
Can anyone recommend some ways of increasing it? Problem is that I am dairy and wheat free.

I had this a couple of weeks ago, I had two days of jsut having nothing in my boobs, and DD wouldnt stay latched on to stimulate me. If you have a pump after each feed pump for 5 minutes to help stimulate your breasts to produce more. Drink plenty of water, eat lots of protein rich foods, rest lots, put bubs to the boob lots, try the milk flow spray from a chemist. There is a recipie for a smoothie in the breasfeeding thread, that is good for boosting supply. I would suggest the lactation cookies if you were able to replace the flour with something not wheat based. Lol I got all this from all the other ladies, I hope it helps

Blessed Thistle capsules were *really* effective for me.
I bought them at my local pharmacy and took 2 in the evening. Woke up like Pammy Anderson the next day!
Good luck, nothing worse than having supply stress on top of other stress!

I always found porridge really good and would eat some early afternoon to help with evening supply. You can make it with water or rice milk to get round the dairy thing.

Ive been making smoothies with rice milk, soaked roalled oats in them, with fruit, and everything I can think of like malt. You could add soy yogurt too.

The best thing I found for my milk, and I was under a lot of stress to with PND and DD had reflux, was this stuff called "Milk flow" and its that natropharm brand, I got it from the chemist. Brilliant stuff and I swear by it.
Also, the breastfeedings teas are good!

Most things have been mentioned... try and rest for a bit if you can, curled up on the sofa watching telly or reading a book while bubs sleeps can do wonders for supply!
Almonds are another great thing to have and fenugreek tablets are another good herbal milk booster. These are harder to find so may need to check out a health shop rather than a chemist.
GL!

If you are anywhere near Hamilton there is a guy who makes lactation drops which are great too. They have an acute dosage as well as maintenence dosage and they work really well too. Let me know if you want his details.

Thanks for the help ladies, I'll try all those things.
DS bit me earlier (and drew blood), normally when he does that I hand express a few drops of milk onto the cut to help heal it but I couldn't get anything out

Some great suggestions here. I just wanted to add that often stress doesn't affect supply so much as it inhibits letdown - there are some great tips for speeding it up here, and here's a page which helps you to determine if it really is low supply. The best thing you can do is relax - easier said than done, I know!

I'm with the others - particularly lots of sleep/rest, lots of fluids, and can I add LOTS of deep breaths. It'll come back I'm sure! luck luck!
I used Weleda and Artemis BF teas with success but who knows if it was the teas or the extra fluid that helped?

I thought my supply was really low the other day so did the feeding every 2 hours for the day as per kellymom website. I haven't used any formula top ups since (had been using for the week prior at DS bedtime feed) so definitely works. Is shattering, but worth it as far as I'm concerned. Also am continuing to feed him once in the night, even though he doesn't wake up. This isn't a big deal as I always wake up anyway and is like a dremfeed for him as he doesn't wake up. If I don't feed him I notice my supply is less the next day.
