Councils Supporting Cloth Nappies

Many local councils are now encouraging parents to have a go using today's modern cloth nappies.
This is because cloth nappies reduce waste to landfill. In fact just one cloth nappy has the potential to stop over 450 disposables from ending up in the landfill.
Kate Meads, The Nappy Lady, says she is seeing increasing support from councils around the country who want to help parents become more environmentally savvy at home.
There are a number of different schemes that have been set up across New Zealand. Some simply provide parents with a voucher to subsidise a pack of nappies, others offer hire kits and there are now workshops available at some councils to give parents the opportunity to ask questions and see lots of different nappies at once.
Below is a list of councils that Kate says offer a current cloth nappy scheme:

QUEENSTOWN LAKES DISTRICT
The Happy Nappy Scheme launched on 1 November 2011 and as of January 2012 all the available Happy Nappy packs had been distributed. The Queenstown Lakes District Council will be evaluating the success of the scheme later this year, with a view to repeating it if there's a need.
Parents contributed just $10 at customer services and received a pack of nappies valued at $140. Each pack had a combination of nappy brands and styles specifically selected for Queenstown weather conditions.
The Nappy Lady is currently working with lots of other councils so keep an eye out on her website to see if your council is taking on a nappy scheme.
If your council offers a scheme that is not currently listed here please email website@ohbaby.co.nz. Or if you would like to see your council supporting a cloth nappy scheme please contact The Nappy Lady at www.thenappylady.co.nz/contact
