Excellent exercise for time-poor mums
There are hundreds of positive, and not so positive sayings about fitness – ‘you’re only one work out away from a good mood’, ‘better sore than sorry’, and my personal favourite, ‘when I lost all of my excuses I found my results’.
All designed to motivate, encourage and empower, but not so helpful when it came to helping with my busy schedule of work, kids, husband and running the house. Like lots of mums, I was finding it hard to fit in a regular exercise routine, meaning I would end up neglecting it altogether. With summer on its way I was really hoping to be back to my best!
So imagine my joy when I discover an exercise machine and bespoke Healthy Mums fitness program specially designed for me - time-efficient, can be done at home and takes a holistic approach to fitness. I decide that it’s worth giving this a really good go by sticking to the program for the full three months and putting my excuses aside and crossing my fingers that by the time summer rolls around I’ll be able to slip effortlessly into my summer wardrobe again.

The Healthy Mums Programme goes for 12 weeks and gets more difficult as the weeks progress. But don’t worry – there are no jumping jacks or high impact exercises that might cause accidental leakage! The videos are broken down into six groups that are repeated for two weeks each, meaning you get a really good grasp on how to do the exercises correctly, before stepping it up a level. The included accessories (bands, pilates ball, dumbbells, etc) add an amount of resistance and keeps things interesting too as the programme changes and progresses as your level of fitness increases.
So how did I do?
Weeks 1 & 2 – Luckily for me, these first two weeks take into account the fact that I might be starting from scratch, and my sore muscles are quick to remind me that’s the case. I really enjoy using the exercise band in conjunction with the Power Plate as I feel like each exercise is really effective. Each exercise is repeated for 60 seconds and is explained thoroughly
Weeks 3 & 4 – As well as using the Power Plate three times a week I take the advice given in the Healthy Mums programme and get moving outside. I attempt to walk up Mount Maunganui and to my surprise I actually find it enjoyable. The strength in my legs is noticeable and my energy levels seem higher than usual. This helps motivate me to keep going with the programme. This week’s Power Plate exercises use all three pieces of extra equipment and mostly focus on leg work
Weeks 5 & 6 – I’ve made it to the half way point! My increased core strength has me enjoying yoga like never before and I’m appreciating my improved posture when sitting at my desk. The kids have noticed my increased energy levels too.
Weeks 7-8 – This week the intensity of the Power Plate exercises increases noticeably and I am thankful that I am able to maintain the intensity of each exercise till the end of the video. As well as keeping up with the exercise programme, I think the healthy eating plan I have been following as much as I can has helped too.
Weeks 9-10 – Due to a heavier work load and family commitments over these weeks, I don’t quite meet my exercise targets but manage to fit in a couple of Power Plate sessions due to the convenience of having the Power Plate at home. Rest times between exercises are down to five seconds so preparation is key.
Weeks 11-12 – The end is in site, it’s bitter sweet as I know I needed the extra motivation of the 12 week programme and am worried I might start to slack off. However with the convenience of the Power Plate and the varied exercises, I complete my 12 weeks felling tighter and more toned, and knowing that this is just the start of my new healthy lifestyle.
Let’s just say, thanks to the Power Plate Healthy Mums Programme, my goal is in reach - but I’m lucky there are still 3 more months until Summer. After regularly using it for just two weeks I started to see results and found it easily fitted it into my day.
