Topic: 1yo still wont stand or crawl Posted: 11 March 2011 at 12:41pm |
OK so I know babies do things in their own time but my DD who has just gone 12 months still doesn't crawl or put weight on her feet. We try to hold her up to stand but she just lifts her knees up. Any one else have a bub like this?

My plunket nurse told me that if babies wont put any weight on their legs/feet by about 10 months- with you holding them up- then you need to get them checked out to make sure they dont have any problems with their hips

My 19 month old niece won't stand or crawl. She just bum shuffles everywhere. She just refuses to stand but apparently she is normal.

She's had her hips checked twice now. Once at 6 months and again as a follow up about a month ago and all was normal. The reason they checked her hips was because of the fact she had a extra fold on her left thigh.
Isla is really good at getting around the place by rolling. She can sit up from lying, and can go from sitting to hands and knees but then she just gets straight onto her tummy and rolls.
Plunket did tell me that babies can only learn one thing at a time and she is quite advanced in other things that babies her age don't normally learn till after they learn to crawl.walk etc so maybe she is just doing things back to front.
It's just so disheartening when people ask how old she is and when I tell them they say 'oh she will be crawling/walking all over the place now wont she!?' and when I say no they are like 'oh, really, she should be by now, is there something wrong with her?'

Not all kids crawl first and if she is getting what she wants by rolling why learn to crawl? If she has been checked out and is fine I am sure she will get there in her own time. Not nice though when people say they should be doing something by a certain age.
Not to brag but just to say she may suddenly do it. My DD wouldn't put any weight on her feet either(literally at all) and only commando crawls. 4 days ago she started pulling herself up and standing properly. She is 11mths. I thought there would be more of an inbetween stage like with DS but she just suddenly did it and nows pulls herself up all the time.
She has been very tired though and has been needing her naps earlier which is a pain cos I like to try and keep them in sync.

How rude!
DD didn't commando crawl until 13 months, standing at about 16 months, walking at 18. Make the most of keeping her in the one place
She's over 2 now and you can't tell she started later than most.

My gal didn't start to commando crawl until 11 months. It then took her another month to work out proper crawling as a means of getting places so I really wouldn't worry about that. I agree with Chickoin - enjoy the ease of a non-crawling baby whilst you can! And I reckon those people mustn't have kids - and if they do then they bloody well should know better!
Not sure about the standing though. Does she 'stand' if she's leaning against the sofa maybe reaching for a toy or something?

There is a baby in my coffee group who sounds very similar. She is 13 months, and a very good bum shuffler but no sign of standing or crawling. She is one of the more verbal babies in the group though. I doubt its anything to worry about. Enjoy having a baby as long as you can

I think they just do it when they are ready, DD started crawling at 7 months, but our neighbour's DD didnt start till 15 months, and has started walking in the last could of weeks (close to about 18months I think). There is no way I have encouraged/wanted her to crawl early, and shes already standing and taking a couple of steps, with no encouragement from me. When Isla is ready you wont be able to stop her!

She'll most likely be fine, and will do it in her own time. One of the girls in our antenatal group was similar - she rolled everywhere and had no need to crawl. I think she was about 15 or so months old, when she started to stand and walk (can't remember if she crawled for a bit or not). I think she may have had a little bit of trouble putting all of her weight on her feet properly, and walking properly at first, and had to see a specialist. But I'm pretty sure she's all good now. I'd just keep an eye on her, and if you think she might having trouble, then see a specialist.

I hate those silly nosey people who just have to comment! We had that when Hunter was younger and was a bit of a chubster so looked older than he was, and people would act soooo surprised that he wasnt walking! Im not sure exactly why they feel as though they are the experts on child development?!
And like you said, Isla is pretty clever and advanced in other areas. And shes pretty darn cute too

Thanks foor all your input ladies, have mentioned it to Plunket and GP but always seem to get fobbed off and take their advice with a grain of salt.... they also told me that she didn't need milk anymore at 8 months when she started refusing it (apparently it has no nutritional value - wtf?!), so these days, I prefer advice from other mums, who actually care So thanks ladies for making me feel better. I'll see how she is going in a month. She is moving forward in leaps and bounds in every other aspect...... I think she'd be dangerous if she could walk as well as being as clever as she is! lol So I guess I should be thankful huh!

My DD didn't move at all until 18 months! Just would happily sit in one position, and wouldn't bear any weight on her legs. She then bum shuffled until she finally walked at... 27 months old!
I had her checked by a paed at around 16 months as she had been a breech birth (with her feet up by her head) and there can be concerns with hips, but no, she was fine and just in no hurry. She is now 3.5 years and a normal healthy full of life little girl.
