definately get something special for yourself! if it were me, i wouldn't use it to pay a bill or mortgage.
my mum brought a nice huge coffee table with her money from her dad when he passed.

Teresa.. Think about what the person who gave it to you would like you to do with it. I think a ring though, as a memory thing, and something you can carry with you (on your finger!) always is a lovely idea. It's what I'd do if I was in your situation.

Saving the money is all very well, but *eventually* you'll do something with it ... how about a night/weekend away, you and Chovy, just the two of you. When my mum passed away there wasn't any cash but she got an IRD refund and my share was $500. So I spent this on a pair of diamond earrings for my wedding day. I too wanted something special - and for me it was extra special because I wore them when I got married.

I got a sizeable amount of inheritance when my dad passed away. I immediately put half on my student loan (which only paid off half of the student loan, so made a nice dent in it. I couldn't justify putting it all on my loan) and the other half is still in savings, hopefully staying there until we're ready to purchase our first home.

I like the jewellery idea too. That way, you have something to show for it. Depends on what you want to do.. you could stick $100 in a bank account for each of the girls so that it would be a nice start and build some interest.. that way it would carry on and perhaps help the girls out later on?

My mum got a small amount of inheritance.
She chose to buy her self a nice piece of jewellery as a memory and also something for herself. (which she never does)
If it were me I would have to put it on my huge credit card debt!

Depends on how much of a dent $1000 will make to your debt/mortgage.
Or how often you get to have a family holiday?
$1000 wont go far on a 200k mortgage, but will pay for a nice holiday.
Sadly it wont cover the cost of a plasma TV.
Spend it on something you wouldn't normally buy or get to do.
