my mum has been in the curtain business for 15 years and advises people not to use thermal as the backing is made of a chemical that when it gets to a certain temperature it lets off gasses.
i only found out this when i put thermal curtains from the warehouse in my daughters room, (which gets very sunny) anyway she started waking alot during the night and every time i went in there it smelt like glue, it got so bad that i was feeling sick from it. i couldnt figure it out and mentioned it to my mum one day. first thing she said was what curtains are in there? i took them down straight away and within a few days the smell was gone.

how can people make products that they KNOW could harm people! I mean, don't they have a conscience? I know formeldyhyde is used to stop clothes creasing, but surely they must realise the levels being used are harmful?

If you have a look on the selvedge of the fabric (the very edge), usually there's either a white band with coloured dots and the name of the fabric company and sometimes the range it's from, or it's printed in small letters just on the very edge of the fabric. If you know who the fabric company is, you can look them up on the internet and find out where their textiles are milled. if things werent made in china then they would be 3x times the price and so we would then complain about that. we cant win really.
i was in the warehouse the other day and it totally put me off the clothes after seeing target. ive been looking around for safe clothing but its pretty much impossible to find, i think the best thing is to soak and wash before wearing.
the other thing to be careful of is thermal fabric in kids rooms, it lets off harmful chemicals when it gets to a certain temperature. I have been thinking about it quite a bit too. I think it is more of a "media hype" and in fact, most clothes have been going through this process for years. As long as you wash clothes thoroughly, they should be okay. Still is worrying though . Ok, well I hadn't even thought about that. So even if you buy NZ made clothing, the material has probably come from China.

This is all a bit daunting. I really wasn't aware that ALL clothing was made in China. I was surprised that when I went through mine and my daughters clothing that everything said Made in China on the label.

What are we supposed to do.

Lemon Grove has natural products for cleaning etc.

I've resolved to buy most of my clothes from op shops now.

I can't shop at Glassons (or others with similar ranges) anymore. With all this drama happening in China, I'm now getting a bit paranoid that every single item of clothing I have ever bought is made in China. Does anyone know where you can buy NZ Made clothing for a reasonable price. Usually anything NZ Made is very expensive.
Surely there must be some good sites where you can buy reasonable clothing.

Also 100% natural or organic soaps, deodorants, dish liquid, washing powder and stuff like that. I'm now getting really worried about all the chemicals I use on a regular basis.
It really is a worry isn't it, just makes me thinks what else do we regularly use that is full of harmful chemicals.
