Wow - you certainly would've had a huge shock from that - How scary is that??!!!!! Glad you could get it out though, you definately deserved a rather large glass of Vino after that!!!

Ohh how scary Mel!! I know that helpless feeling well!

I have found that even though your toddlers (or younger) may be able to eat chips - corn chips are a different story & have found my littlies can't eat them till a bit older. They are thicker than normal chips & don't soften as quickly, and some children so chew their food well enough for it to fit down their small throats.

Also, when doing First Aid courses in the past, I've remembered that even when you think you're hurting the child by a)hitting them on the back or b)putting your finger down their throat - it would be better for them to have a bit of a scratch or bruise from it, than choking to death. So don't be afraid to hurt them in order to save their life.

its so scary yah mel, rhiannon choked on nacho chips as well, and it was just a tiny little corner, we have found that she is fine on normal chippies, but on nacho chips she always choks and it doesnt matter if they are the round ones or not.

I am sorry u had that scary experience and i hope you are all okay

bummer...

just a reminder too tho that the first aid books say you shouldnt try and fish it out if something is stuck in their throat as it may push it further back. I keep thinking about doing a first aid course too.   

oh and wanted to say too that corn chips can also scratch too.

I know what you mean about that horrid feeling! I felt like that when that stupid woman gave quinn the boiled lolly and he choked...

You poor thing Mel, I have had the same problem with Anastasia, had to ban corn chips for a while till she got the hang of them when she was a bit older, they don't soften like regular potato chips so I have only just started introducing them back again ... so far so good.

Because tonight I got the fright of my life when Benjy choked.
We were having nachos for dinner and he helped himself to a chip. Next thing I know he's gagging and choking on it.
I flipped him over and whacked his back to try and get it up. He coughed a little out and started to cry. I thought it was over and sat him up, but then he started gagging again. I tried to fish it out, but my stupid nails were too long and I only wound up scratching him.
It happened twice more and I was ready to call an ambulance, but thank God, DH was finally able to reach in and get the chip out.
He said it was quite far down and stuck.
I can't believe it happened, I keep thinking about it and seeing it over and over in my head. He's been eating chips for ages, so I didn't think much of it when he took one...
I can't believe how useless I felt either, when nothing could do helped him.
I also can't believe how lucky we were, it could have turned out so much worse.
Moral of the story for me: Don't assume just because he's eating regular food and can bite and chew that you don't need to watch him.
