Author: Mazzy
Subject: 10310
Posted: 23 March 2008 at 10:41am

I am fairly cautious about ham and deli stuff while pregnant, I figure even if it doesn't happen often it still happens and why take the risk, it's a simple thing not to eat and it's not like I don't have any other options for food!
I know my mum didn't have food restrictions during her pregnancy, but I also know that back then deli ham was considered a luxury and a lot of the 'not recommended' foods from now just weren't eaten that often back then. Also, I don't know what the stats were back then for infant mortality etc - even though I'm fine it could be the case that it was more common for issues to occur and now they know why. Just my personal take on it!

About a month ago here in Hamilton there was a massive Listeria outbreak from cold meat processed by Leonards. It went through the hospital as well as supermarkets. It's the first time I'd ever heard of that happening, and was so glad I didn't eat deli meat. It's not like I'd get a warning that listeria was going to hit that day!

I am hanging out for sushi, but it's kind of fun to look forward to that treat at the end.

I eat ALL the deli ham and everything. I do make a point of going first thing in the morning when I know they've got the fresh stuff in before buying it however. I dont worry about it, because my whole idea is, you cant stop your life and starve to death just because you are pregnant! Gosh, back in the old days people didnt even know about the dreaded listeria etc, and hardly anyone got it. So much hype around things like that these days that i'm not gonna be suprised if they'll have us all living in a little plastic bubble soon.

Only if it's been cooked in a frying pan or something, I so would not want to eat microwaved ham! Kind of defeats the purpose of a nice piece of ham really. I've been avoiding those sorts of foods mostly, but I know we'll have ham at Xmas and I'll be having some for sure!
