I have used the grandies but usually the kids' aunts/uncles... and often put a little supper together for them. Nothing flash, if I start big I'll always have to do big IYGWIM.

And if we're gonna be out late, I offer to put them up overnight. In this day and age, I would pay someone $30 to come and look after my child from 7.30pm till 3am. With an hour grace on each side (I could leave earlier or come home later). I used to get paid a ridiculous amount to babysit when I was at uni... I felt terrible accepting the money!!

I prefer the babysitting swap method - find another family and trade babysitting. wow I was so ripped off.. $10 the night and it would be from 7pm till something like 1am-2am. I remember doing two nights in one weekend and only getting paid for one... I should of said something but young back then and didn't know anybetter. I used to get $25 a day to look after 3 kids from 8am - 5.30pm in the school holidays. My aunty used to pay me the most to look after my cousin - about $20 for a night (I stayed over as she got home late). That included making him dinner.

Back in the day when I regualy baby sat for a family (it was 6.30pm - 3am, and I stayed over night) I got dinner, $50-70 and my legs waxed (the mum owned a beauty therapy studio). I think I got a great deal.

I am looking into this as next year DH may not be here and I still want to play in the band so i'm going to work out what it is best have someone over every Wed night and pay them, or convince the MIL to come here every Wed night to look after the boys.

They are some ridiculous prices! When I did nannying/babysitting/mum's help kind of work when I was 19 I got $10 an hour. That was what they offered. I did babysit for a friend in exchange for dinner, chocolate and a DVD.

When I was a student I worked as a nanny and a babysitter and got paid $12.50pr hour. I worked with the father.
