Author: HelenElla
Subject: 1073
Posted: 31 October 2005 at 3:06pm

Thats horrible Judith, my contractions have been so painful too I hate hospitals so midwife has just been keeping a close eye on bubs as well as my blood pressure. Most of the contractions that I've been getting are worse than the ones I had when I was in labour with Chloe. I've been taking extra strength panadiene before I go to bed so I don't get woken up by so many of the contractions, which seems to help a little. Don't worry about the crying I'm sure it's completely normal for people in this situation or at least I hope it is because I've been doing it pretty much everyday now.

Bubs is now tightly engaged but is growing so much that he/she is making it difficult to breath again. I'm sure this baby is going to be huge! I've had high blood pressure, headaches and dizzyness as well as swollen ankles the past few days but this morning my blood pressure was down a bit so they just think the rest of the symtoms are due to getting little to no sleep for the past few weeks as well as carrying round so much extra weight. I've been ordered to stay off my feet until bubs is born, but I'm just hopeless at doing nothing and I feel so mean not being able to take Chloe out to the park and simple things like that.

My midwife is away from Thursday until Saturday so hopefully bubs will decided to come before or after that. I'm sooo worried about having someone I don't know deliver the baby after I had an uncomfortable and slightly more stressful experience with a midwife I didn't know when I had Chloe.

I lived on codine for the next couple of days! When I found out I was pregnant, I asked the doctor about the effect the drugs (the general anestetic(?) and the codine) would have had on my baby and was told that they wouldn't have had any. My midwife couldn't do much of anything, she just said that most of the pain will be the first stage of labour stating to happen which could last for weeks before real labour starts. My blood pressure was up a bit and the doc said that they wouldn't induce me or do anything about the pain unless my blood pressure gets any higher because bubs is still active and happy they don't want to rush things. They have given me codiene for the pain which helps a bit although I don't really like to take it in case bubs feels the effects(it makes me very drowsy) and I am seeing the physio today which might be able to help. They didn't do an internal because they said even if I was 5cms dilated they wouldn't do anything until I go into full labour anyway. So until either bubs is ready I just told to rest and do nothing! I don't know how when I have a 2year old running round!!

My midwife told me I had "irritable uterus" - lots of irregular, often quite strong contractions that didn't do a damn thing as far as bringing on labour goes. I guess it was the uterus equivilent of a tickle at the back of your throat - annoying and pointless.

Talk to your midwife, get her to do an internal examination. If there has been no softening or thinning of the cervix, then talk to her about options to bring on proper contractions rather than the stupid braxton-hicks ones you are suffering through now. My midwife told me of a number of herbal remedies to help bring on labour (other than raspberry tea). You might be able to get something made up for you at a health store. Make sure that you talk to them first, and that the person who assembles your order is familiar with how the products can effect pregnancy.

My midwife just tells me it's just my body getting ready for labour and to hang in there. I feel like crying most of the time it's horrible! I try to ignore the contractions but that doesn't help!!

I really understand your frustration! It drove me crazy and a few nights I was completely in tears! I have no suggestions for bringing on labour (tried everything and nothing happened). I would suggest taking some panadol when the contractions start and just trying to get some sleep. My midwife told me to, i ignored her, and when i finally was in labour i was tired having not slept well the few days before. If it's real contractions, they will get stronger and wake you up, so you might as well get some sleep while you can!

Looking back I wish I could have gone into natural labour - inducement was painful..

Have no advice really - got the stories about a bumpy ride in the car - walking - raspbery leaf tea etc..

Hope things kick in soon, has the midwife checked you out or anything? They will keep me up all night then stop by morning or they get really strong and painful but irregular but nothing happens!! I wouldn't mind the pain or sleepless nights if it actually ment I get to meet bubs soon but they way this is going I'll end up putting up with this for the next 3and a half weeks until they induce me or something!
Sorry but I really needed to get that out a good moan always seems to help.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is there anything I could do to hurry labour up? Anybody have any advice before I start to tear my hair out?
