Author: Orca
Subject: 10826
Posted: 18 September 2007 at 7:30pm

I started smoking when I was 15 and by the time I gave up I had been smoking for 18 years and for a lot of those was a 20 a day smoker! I was in the UK when I first decided I wanted to give up and I got the Allen Carr Easy Way to Give up Smoking book. I read that and stopped for 10 days and then I decided I would only smoke when I was out drinking. I soon realised that I was going to end up with a drinking problem as I was always up for going out so I could smoke! I thought compared to 20 a day becoming a "social smoker" was pretty good however no matter how many I smoked I was still smoking. The book had been successful for me to a point so I decided to try the Allen Carr clinic. I took an afternoon off work and spent 5 hours there and it was basically going through the book again but in a group discussion situation with a 20 minute hypnotherapy bit at the end. I did that two years ago and I haven't smoked since!

It was fairly expensive but the method worked for me and I soon got my money back on what I was saving on cigarettes a week. I had no cravings and just don't have the desire to smoke anymore.

I think half the battle is over when you decide you really want to give up no matter what method you use. I can't ever imagine smoking again now and my life as a non-smoker is so much better than when I was a smoker.

Good luck!

    Author: Peace
Subject: 10826
Posted: 18 September 2007 at 4:33pm

Hey Sunny,
I was a social smoker for around 9 or 10 years before I quit. I thought I could quit anytime, after all I was only a social smoker, not a real addict. I think that is the worst kind of addict though as we get into situations and form a constant habit. We are not reliant on the nicotine but more the comfort of routine.
I was on one of my "I'm not going to smoke for awhile" (usual length of time is around 3 weeks of not smoking) and found out I was pregnant. Definitely one of the most HUGE things I could ever do for Olivia was give up smoking. I must impress on you that you need to have a good reason and lots of will power. I still want a cigarette when I have a wine or beer, I don't think anything in the world could make my cravings just go. But I don't want that cigarette because I'm a Mum now and I want to be there for my daughter when she becomes a woman. I want to be her good example.
Admittedly I have fallen off the wagon but I am willing to work at it for the rest of my life. It is REALLY REALLY REALLY hard for a social smoker to kick the habit so sending lots of will power vibes your way. I hope you have it in you to do it

He wants to get the whole world to quit. I was in the UK at the time and found sitting in traffic and when out drinking the worst for cravings. I started keeping boiled sweets in the car, I also kept some sweets at work. As for the social side of it that was just sheer will power as a lot of my friends smoked and there was no way to avoid being around it. I think you need to set a date and then just stop and be really strong about it, it is really really difficult. You say you smoke after work, so before you stop decide what you are going to do after work instead so that you don't miss it so much, i.e treat yourself to a coffee and a couple of chocy bics instead.

Once i took up eating peanuts instead of smoking, then i had to give up the peanuts!!! you have to really want to tho...

When my dp and me moved up to Nelson we decided to quit so we went cold turkey and that lasted around 3 weeks until we wanted more so we bought a pack or super mild (yuck ) and had one each and then wet the rest so we wouldn't be tempted. We continued doing this and then found out I was pregnant so that was end for me. It was the kick i needed, dp took about another month before he finished all together.

We had both tried to stop before but I think the thing that really did it for us was if we had one we didn't give up trying we just kept on it.

Good luck
