I tend to be the same.. there are plenty (actually lately, a heck of alot) of things or ideas that make me think or or or "wow that person's a bit " or just plain

I have learnt that it gets nasty very quicly, and there are some things and yes, as simsam says, everyone has their opinions, and while no-one means to push them, it takes one person to insult the idea of someone elses opinion for it to turn into a kind of "well i think this" "well i think that" "well, if you think THAT then you're wrong"    Not often, but i have noticed it a bit more lately.

I generally try to avoid posting things I feel really strongly about because you get jumped on so fast its just not worth it. I always go by the rule 'If I say something and it can be taken in 1 or 2 ways, and one of those ways makes you angry or upset, I meant the other one'.

i think people DO need to think twice about how they post their opinions. as we are not able to see people's faces and hear the tone, often the meaning can be misunderstood. I don't think anyone should have to think twice about posting their opinions (unless it would obviously offend another (i.e. race comments etc), people should think before they post that they are offended (and I mean that in the nicest way honest! I'm just bad with words LOL).

A lot of problems have come from people not agreeing with another post and making it personal which was never intended by anyone. There's nothing wrong with having a differing opinion from someone else, it opens your eyes to both sides of the discussion.

I am totally against circumcision, but my very good friend is for. What i dont understand is when you give an opinion or point of view/story & get dissed for it... You walk away; coz you know why!!!
You can still respect others & dont have to agree & can continue to speak you truth quietly & clearly.

Well said SimSam. Knowing when to stop and how to put your own thoughts across without negating or belittling others' opinions is a feature of this forum I think should be championed.
Just as important as providing our own perspectives is listening and considering others' ideas, and not assuming anything about why they think the way they do. That doesn't mean you have to agree with them or change your own opinions, but it also doesn't mean you have to challenge everything either - which I guess is where your point comes in about knowing where to stop and respecting others.

Good for you simsam, couldn't agree more. I've always liked OH Baby cause no matter what you say, opinion or otherwise, everyone is at least polite to each other which I think is important.

I also love the support, and kindness that is shown time and time again by the ladies and gents on this forum.

I have been thinking about this post a lot…and after laying awake at 3am this morning thinking about it I decided that I had better to write it – even if its just to get it off my chest.

 

One of the things that I love about Oh Baby is that we are a diverse group of people.

We have a wide range of interests and views, which translates into a wide range of opinions which we are happy to share with each other.

In life, we all form our opinions based on our own personal experiences, our own values, our upbringing, our religious & cultural views and the opinions of those closest to us. I think its important to remember that when we share our opinions or views – we are not proclaiming that ours is the “right” or “only” viewpoint on a matter, but it is OURs, and as such we should respect each other for sharing it.

It is always fun to engage in debate, and I suspect that sometimes we all say things to be a little controversial or stir things up, or prompt a debate – that’s a good thing, it can result in some really interesting discussions, but we have to recognise those topics or discussions where we just aren’t going to agree – and to “walk away” or just accept that we have a difference of opinion. I don’t think that anyone on OB is out to “convert” or evangelise anyone to their way of thinking – I just think that we all need to know when to stop sometimes.

Some people may feel that this post in itself is controversial, and that’s fine, but it has been on my mind for a couple of days and wanted to share my feelings.
