I had a fantastic experience at CWH!! (yes, suprised me too). Apart from the megabitch midwife all the others were reaaly helpful and consistent!!! They suggested alternatives when I was stumped but basically reassured me that I was going well. They got it across tome about feeding often to build up my supply etc.

Guess I was lucky in that BF is relatively easy for me nd Idid have 8 days in hospital...and I stubbornly believed I would do it....I never considered not because to be honest the thoufht of formula seems too bllody confusing for a nappy brain like mine

Ella was sleepy too, mucousy.. and one nurse helped me express the colostrum to feed to her. The best advice my mum gave me was to refuse to leave the hospital until I had breastfeeding established.. I had an (unplanned) homebirth and daily visits from the midwives who were fantastic at helping me establish breastfeeding. It seems weird to me that maternity wards aren't helping mothers establish breastfeeding. At our Antenatal classes the woman running our classes was not allowed to teach bottlefeeding so what are they expecting? I had quite a good experience but then latching went ok with us, my friend who had problems got no real help at CWH, i got transferred to burwood and they were wonderful, bub got jaundice so I was still there when my milk came in and they helped me with latching him different as I had a blister on one nipple.
Having said that I have now stopped breastfeeding as I kept getting mastitis and I felt like a failure, and some so called professional have made me feel like I didn't try hard enough.
Luckily now I am strong enough to think screw them, and screw everyone else who looks down their nose at me when I'm giving him formula in public, you don't know me, you don't why bub is on formula, so F&%^ OFF
My own LMC made me cry over Bfing, just because I gave him EBM. OMG i had great help in hospital and they were awesome to me re BF and we had no probs at all really....

GO Auckland Hospital....maybe c sections are the way to go - seems you get much better after care!

Just finished watching today's episode. I felt sorry for that mum who admitted feeling like a failure at breastfeeding - and then what the karitane nurse said to her - seemed very inconsiderate.

In the birthing centre they showed a video that said "Breastfeeding should be 100% comfortable and painless" (or something like that). At the time I was finding it anything but, so started feeling like a failure. I agree Deb, that Karitane nurse was rude and annoying. I'm so glad we didn't have her as one of our 'experts'
I agree about the breastfeeding too. Birthcare were hopeless for helping get feeding established with Ella and North Shore were completely weirded out when I asked the nurse to help me latch Benjy. "But I thought you had an older child!"
Lucky I had a good midwife to help me.
You've all seen my boobs now, one of the bf shots was me and Benjy, LOL!

I agree with the Bfeeding... the hospital sucked... every time someone showed me how to they showed me something different!! And whats with the grabbing your boob and thrusting boob and baby together... like thats going to help?!?!

Hospitals suck.. they wanted to boot me out but I wouldn't leave. They kept saying you can come back to see a lactation consultant but why would I leave when I have the right people are here in the ward?!

At Waikato, I had the nurses come in and express the colostrum from me as I was still quite sleepy from the c-section and then they came in and asked if they could express some more for a couple of ladies and babies down the hall who were having trouble. I said yeah sure take it, as it was pouring out. The only advice I had from the nurses in regards to b/f is was that I was doing it wrong and then they made me watch a video but that was it. It was not until I went home and my mums friend who is a neo-natal nurse came and showed me how to do it properly.

I haven't seen either of them, but I agree, breastfeeding advice and support is sorely lacking in hospitals. am watching this again and i cant believe that karitane nurse is going on about breastfeeding to that poor mum who already admitted she felt a failure for not doing it. way to go to make her feel bad about it...
yesterdays show and todays show have confirmed to me that hospitals just arent helping new mums feed their babies. i couldnt beleive yesterdays one where that lady was told to express colostrum and then no follow up on what to do next and it was her friend who helped her establish bf'ing. grrrr.
