having seen people do it thru work I would say budget budget about $20,000 to nice but still not overly expensive about $60,000 for what you are thinking if to start from scratch.

Our contents is insured for $65k but i still think you can kit a house out on $20k. Our insurance is so high because it covers my piano, jewellery carpet, curtains clothes etc as well as just furniture, crockery etc.

Our contents is for $65k but we upgraded pretty much all of our stuff when we got married 4 years ago (before then we had a house load of Warehouse stuff lol)

We're in the process of getting quotes for appliances and would recommend you take a trip to one of the Appliance Sheds (or other factory outlet). The savings from there are huge (even more if you buy seconds!). If you are setting up a full household on a budget you can buy cheap dinner sets, pots and pans etc from The Warehouse. havent read the replies but if you buy smart you can cut costs.

for instance i have the harvey norman mailer and they have package bedroom deals - bed and furniture - for between 2-6 thou. they have nice outdoor furniture sets that would look just as good in as out side from as little $700. big save furniture also do package deals, this mailer they have a 10 pc package which incls dining table and chairs, buffet, entertainment unit and a coffee table in nz pine for $2000. i dont consider a dishwasher a necessity or microwave or dvd player or stereo... so stuff like that you could save for and buy what you really want later ... but i would imagine it would be the small stuff that all adds up, you know like lamps etc.

Just looking around my house I'd say between $35-40k without including outdoor furniture, bbq or spare room. I have my contents insured for just over $30k, and that's just me alone - so one QS bed, fridge/freezer, washing machine, dryer, sofa bed, microwave, TV/VCR, laptop, PC, printer etc. In saying that, it is probably far overestimating what it is worth!!! Our contents are insured for $60,000 - however, neither Nat or myself think what we have is actually worth that much! To replace new for old, we worked out we'd need about $45k including all furniture, clothes, toys etc. Might change a little now there's going to be 4 children instead of 3. Plus you can get really good discounts if you buy at the same place and places like Kmart sometimes offer a discount if you buy loads of things from there, I use to be a manager with them so know this first hand. Our contents are insured for $120,000.00 But that also includes curtains and carpets etc. Jen, I think your calculations would be pretty good - some things you have on there are much more than they would actually cost (driers are about $400 not $800, microwaves ditto) and vice versa. I would say $35k would be a good estimate, and so many places have good specials on a lot of the time that you could get things a lot cheaper than you think.

Hmmm... I worked in insurance before kids... and I would say more like 60k.... thats what our contents are insured for... If you get a booklet from AMI or State or anywhere they have a check list and you would be surprised what you may forget and how much even cutlery and crockery and all the little appliances etc cost. Maybe you could get your mum to send a check list over for you? May jolt your memory as to what you have forgotten. (also in our figure all the power tools, lawn mower etc are included)

On saying that though you can do it on 35K and get other things as you go along. Thanks guys- I don't feel to foolish then. I was saying we could do it for 35k ish and Mum thought we'd be lucky to get it for any less than 60k. I thought she was being pretty ridiculous and looks like most of you think less than that too.

We have just kitted out our house here on the cheap for £3k. Everything is new but pretty budget but it only needs to last 3 years before we come back- I want to get decent stuff when we get back.

Heres what I've allowed:

Lounge Suite 3000
Entertainment Unit 800
Coffee Table 600
Dining Suite 1500
Buffet 800
Bookcase 800
Desk set 400
Extra Sofa 1000
Main bedroom suite 3500
Girls room suites 4000
Guest bed 1000

plus 9-10k for extras like Towels,Bedding,Kitchen stuff etc That all added up comes to just over 35k.

Obviously some things will be a bit more expensive than I've allowed and others might be a bit cheaper but is there any huge cost that I've forgotten? Our contents is 50k, but that includes all our clothes and DFs uniform.
Our flatmate is about to move out into his own home at the moment he only has furniture for one bedroom.

20k is probably a good figure - depdending on where you shop and bargains.

We got most of our furniture from places like Big Save and Smiths City they have good discounts.

Have a look on some of the insurance company web sites, they often have calculaters to help you figure out how much contents insurance you need - so that could be a good way of figuring out a rough figure.

When we went to the UK we only took one suitcase and one backpack each, and we were lucky to live in nice furnished flats, but we did buy lots of things that added up in terms of costs, and its the little things that you need that seem to end up costing - tea towels, sheets, mugs all those sorts of things!

Oooh, ballpark figure,I'd say at least $20,000. We actually shipped a load of furniture back with us so that we only needed a new bed for us (I hated our UK bed), a new bed for Gemma (she was still in her cotbed - which Cameron then inherited)and other assorted oddments. We spent $1000 on a queen size bed including mattress, pillows and bedding (it was a display model in the shop so bargain!!). I'd recommend a trip or two to Ikea before you come back, if only for things like cheap glasses, plates, picnic (plastic) plates etc.

We got a decent wooden queen bed for $120 brand new from canary furniture in chch, and I think the mattress was only about $600, you just need to shop around for bargains. We got all our lounge stuff, dining table, coffee table, tv cabinet, bookcase and sideboard for $2000, its all solid remu (sp) and was on sale at smithcity. we had to set up from pretty much scratch and it isn' as bad as that, depending on whether you are prepared to go second hand. If you need beds (3k ea per queen/king); fridge (2k); microwave; kitchen stuff; lounge stuff; TV; kiddie stuff - gosh I'd say maybe $40k if you are careful. It's amazing how money goes. Ok, very rough addition but I would say about $20,000, this is going by what we bought to set ourselves up out here. We have been in NZ 3 and half years but didn't buy everything at once as for a while we lived in furnished rental properties and then once we bought we only had a one bed, one sofa etc and have slowly added to it.
We have some cheapo stuff, some middle of the range and some quite expensive (our sofa, went a bit OTT with that one). How much do you guys think it would cost to kit out a new house from scratch? I mean moving into a 4 bedroom/2 living area home and you have to get EVERYTHING for it new and reasonable quality stuff, not really expensive designer but not bargain basement either. Mum and I were having a debate this morning- she thought it would be alot more than I did.

We have a figure of how much we are going to set aside to do this when we move back and Mum thinks we will need way more than we have decided.
