Ask your councill about the worms or you can purchase ready made kits from most hardware shops, they have full instruction & then just dump in your tiger worms & scraps(just avoid meat, bones, citrus, white bread & onions) & waalaa. Watermelon need raised beds for good water drainage(tyres do a good job or just mounds of dirt) they need groups of 4 plants for sexing & of course lots of water.
I dont use any food, just good prepared dirt for my plants.

We don't normally feed with anything extra but have fed/prepared the ground before with blood & bone & compost.
Dont panic too much half the fun of it all is doing things your way & learning together.

For those of you who have tomoato plants, do you use the special tomato plant food or the same stuff you use for the rest of your veges?

My daughter and I have just started a new garden...well actually everything is still in trays as we are starting with seeds....and we don't really know what we are doing

Wow there are some great veges going to be grown around the country!!
Fleury when starting the caps off you can put them in a really light potting mix & keep them moist and warm then you should be right, I have found them really easy to start them but it still gets cool down here then when we get fruit 'little fingers' think they are really pretty so thats the end of that!
We have in out garden at the moment silverbeet, sugar snp peas, peas, onions, potatoes, cauli, broccoli, rhubarb, raspberries, leaks, lettuce, mint, basil, parsley, pear tree, couple of peach trees, blackboy peach, apricot (havn't seen much blossom this year) grapefruit, bought a new apple tree, fejoa, berry canes, blue berry plant. Yet to put in garden beetroot corn, going to try watermelon, pumpkin, zucchini, cucumber, tomato, parsnip, garlic & whatever other seeds I come across, I love having fresh stuff from the garden!!

ETA: DH went & got horse poop for the garden a few months back & we grow our pumpkins & zucchini in the compost heap, also have a sack of (fresh ) cow patties hanging in a large container of rain water, also threw some lime & blood n bone over the garden before digging in poop

Yeah i have a garden
I have celery, onion, chives, corn, carrots, potatoes, rhubarb, lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, cauli, cabbage, silver beet, gerkins, pumpkin, watermelon & of course tomato's(which already have flowers on them!!) And then there is the strawberry patch & herbs such as rosemary, thyme & parsley. Schitt i can go on...
I have raised beds in full sun & use chook schitt to fertilise, as well as compost

to grapefruit - and we've got plenty of lemons. Its cause of our neighbours grapefruit we've got tangelos instead of mandarins.

Best get digging. Doesn't help when we look over the back fence at our neighbours perfectly terraced and landscaped back garden. We dug straight into the ground.

I did last year, they need to be in a lot of sun to grow.

For your vege patch, do you have raised boxes, or do you dig straight into the lawn? We have to start one from scratch.
Unfortunately we don't live near the sea to get seaweed.

I've been trying to raise capsicums from seed with no luck. Has anyone else grown these from seed? Well I badgered Hubby to do one this year as I really hate buying supermarket crap.
So far we have in the ground:
Peas
Broccoli
Cabbage
Lettuce
Carrots
Beans
We have seeds in trays waiting to germinate:
Cucumber
Leeks
And I have a tray of beefsteak tomatoes and some basil that are flourishing at my kitchen window and waiting till Labour weekend before they go in the ground.
Hubby is also talking about doing a potato mound and I think I might go get some parsley if we have room.
For some good things to use to fertilize your vege garden, my friend gave me a good recipe:
Seaweed. Put some in a bucket and fill to the top with no sea water. You can scoop the water out when it gets all manky and icky brown and use that. You can also use the weed as well to make the ground more fertile.

We've got red onions, and snap peas in at the moment. We have apple, plum, lemon and tangelo trees.

That's impressive! We need to chop part of a tree out of our garden so that our vege garden isn't soo shaded. We have brocolli (jut about ready to pick), cauliflower, onions, spring onions and strawberries.

Just dug a new bed and have a new raised garden waiting for soil - they are going to have potatoes, carrots, peas, beans, tomatoes and herbs.

I think I have lots in mine.

From seed we have: Carrots, Peas, Beans, Spring Onions, Sweet Corn, Leeks, Beetroot, Radishes, Green Zuccini, Capsicum, Brocolli, Cabbage, Lettuce, Cauli, Potatoes.

Plants I have brought: Tomatoes (the normal big ones), Yellow Zuccini, Silverbeet, Chilli, Strawberries from years ago.

I still want to plant: Spinich, Herbs, Cherry Tomatoes. But i'm running out of room and waiting on DH to dig a new garden for me.

we have one. i subscribe to the "lazy" vegetable garnde. first I dig it up (over several weeks), then i initially put things in rows but end up throwing them anywhere. then i water every day for a week. then forget for three. repeat. I got a fab crop of silverbeet last year. was realy excited until i remembered i can't stand the stuff. i also had some cauliflower and cabbage starting nicely until the sheep episode. In our new garden we are still diggin but we have a wee greenhouse and have put some chillis in it. we also have random rhubarb and lettuce in the garden.

We have twp free range rabbits so we just put a fence around it, I don't think the vineger thing will work nictoddie because our rabbits like salt and vineger chips!

We have decided to try to grow everything from seeds this year so DH has made a mini glass house. In the garden so far we have celery, cabbage, raddishes(for colsaw) silverbeet(for the rabbits) and beans. But in our glasshouse we have lettace, cherry tomatoes, money maker tomatoes and I also going to grow a watermelon for the girls to watch and some sunflowers for them too. We have one, it's DH's new project..

It's got lettuce, chillis and strawberries in it at the moment but he's planted carrots, capsicum, snow peas, cucumber and is gonna plant some sweet corn. Yep we have one, so far we have planted cherry tomatoes, a yellow variation(these are really sweet and look good in salads) and normal tomatoes, cos lettuce, corn and I have Lebanese cucumber seeds growing, will plant those out when they get bigger. Also grow parsley and basil.

We use compost and a general vegetable fertilizer which comes in a powder form.
