Our papers are all in a concentina file, but our passports and birth certs are in a plastic bag in case we needed to grab and go, and as for cash money we always have the work float here, so we could use that in case of emergency. I also always have 2 or 3 l of bottled water in the fridge (to drink) so I guess that counts as well. In my car, I have a proper first aid kit from the chemist, blanket, towel, loo papaer, wipes, nappies and half of my cd collection...

But with three kids we would be screwed, if something did happen. We are in town but I guess you can't always guarantee you will be able to get out or that there would be anything left in the stores. New Orleans springs to mind when I think about what could happen. OK it's worse case scenario but they were so unprepared I couldn't imagine my kids having to go without water for 48 hours.

And there's lots of ideas and things I hadn't thought to put in there so thanks heaps.
Always have enough gas in the gas bottle as well as small canisters to hook into our little gas burner. Heaps of rice, pasta, canned stuff, cereal (you can survive a long time on cereal!) and then there's the wonderful army ration packs that contain muesli with milk powder (just add water!) yay!

It's a good idea to get some longlife milk too if you've got kids, just to supplement their diet over the 3 days, and keep fluids up. We've also got a kickass first aid kit (again, army issue) with everything you need to perform minor surgery if need be haha (that's DH's job, I don't do needles).

Just remember, if you take a kit in your car and you have cans, TAKE A CAN OPENER! Worst we are likely to get is an earthquake (we have had a few big ones here as we are on the fault line) or a massive storm where we are cut off.

I figure if we are able to stay in our house we would also have whatever food is in pantry/freezer as well as all our utensils. Oh also in the box are all our plastic plates/knives etc and toilet paper, plus some plastic bags. Need to restock the water too.

Only thing left that I want to do is have a box to put all our important stuff like photo negatives, passports, documents etc into that we could grab if there was a fire.

We have 3 torches.. I think thats cause we thought we had lost one so bought another etc lol.. we have candles too.

Or are we as New Zealand just really complacent and think nothing will happen.

Just Curious
