I'm planning to get him one of those toys that fits on the seat back. Mum was very close to buying one that had a variety of sirens until someone pointing out that it could cause an accident....and we were living with her for six months. I bet she'll give me one as a going away present when we go to gisborne.

They are manufactured to extremely stringent designs, so if they say they are safe from 9kg then they are. Plunket do recommend 12 months, but many carseats are not designed to be rearfacing after a child reaches the 9kg mark so they are actually less safe if left rear facing. Only designs which say that they are suitable to be rear facing till 12 months should be used that way until 12 months.

In saying that, we turned Maya around at 5 1/2 mths as she had screamed every time we put her in the car since the day she was born. She much preferred being forward facing. She was only 6 1/2 kgs then, if I had waited till she reached 9kg she would have been 18 mths old!

The tether strap was a pain in the ass but it's got to be used with those type of seats so I just had to put up with it.
She enjoyed that carseat much more than her capsule as it is a little more upright than capsules while still being rear facing.

If you have a seat that reclines in the forward facing position then you may get away with it. The main problem with having babes forward facing is that when they fall asleep their heads roll down and as Janine was saying with regards to Ayja falling asleep in the buggy, there is a potential that they won't be able to breathe properly, but either way it just looks so damn uncomfortable!!

When I took it to plunket to make sure it was in right, she said that that particular brand (mothercare) isn't designed to be rear facing after 9kg, so we will be turning it around soon.
I was under the understanding that 1 year is preferable, but over 9kg is ok.
Jake used to be the same in his pod, grouchy on longer periods in the seat, but he's fine rear facing in this one, although I did buy a lamaze sunshade that has this cool remote control you operate from the front that makes the thing sing and move around for about 15 minutes. I just use it when he is losing his temper, and its great. That said, he's not nearly so grumpy in his bigger seat, although it is a hassle with the tether! I think it is more comfortable for him maybe? The sunshade cost me $49 (!!!) so i've gone from having a reasonably cool looking car to geeky kidsmobile in no time!

Edited by jacobsmama

I moved Kiya to a forward facing carseat at 7 months, but I've heard that now its best to wait until the child is a year old (instead of 6 months as it used to be).

Nathaniel and I are trying to decide when Josiah should move out of his capsule into a bigger carseat. We've got a bit of slack - he's not quite 6.5kg, and still in 000 clothes, so he's not too big for the capsule yet. However, Josiah is getting very bored. He doesn't mind short trips, but gets frustrated on anything longer than about 15 minutes.

We've got a carseat that can be forward or rear facing, but we don't want to use it rear facing, as the teather(?) strap makes it really hard to get the kid in and out, and also makes it hard to do up the carseat over Kiya's booster seat!

When did you move your kids from rear to forward facing?
