nzpiper yeah i didn't know either..i went to the bank with the one i signed at the wedding and she said oh no not that one...send away for one(which i discovered just now i could have just got that other one certified) but now we have one like a birth certificate that i can take places with me..but would just be easier if i got my license done as well:) even though its got 5 years to run!

Yeah, you sign the certificate in your maiden name - however it's "proof" enough that your name (and therefore your signature) has changed. I've had problems with setting up out trusts etc in the last year and a half, they like to see photo ID, and all mine says old name! Not good when it's for your future children and you want it to be YOUR family trust IYKWIM? Kawwwwww - I didnt know that about the marriage cert. I also assumed the one we got at the ceremony was the "true" document. That might be why the JP looked at me funny when she certified copies. Oh well, it worked for the bank

I left my driver's licence for almost a year and didn't have any problems. Signature, you'll remember both for the next three years so no prob. as far as travelling i got told I would have to have passport and tickets in same name.. and we just paid extra 24$ (if you got married in last year which you did ) to get a proper copy of marriage cert as i thought the one we signed at wedding was legal one for changing but it wasn't....I haven't changed drivers license but i must do that.. apparently better to have both changed.. Man you are on to it quick. I am slowly getting round to it. Have changed one bank account, sent a copy of marriage licence to my registration board for work and thats about it. Drivers licence needs renewing next month so will change that then. I would leave the drivers licence, someone said above that your ID should be in your legal name, well guess what... married ladies have 2! So yay less work until you can actually be bothered changing them. Why pay more money into the money-hungry govt dept's than you have to?

All I've changed.. utilities (we moved after we were married so no issues), insurance (fine), bank (just took in marriage licence (not certificate)), uni (licence). you have to travel in the name on your passport...no exceptions! It used to be that you could get your passport endorsed with your married name, but thats no more.
I got married at the start of 06 and still have no photo id under my married name which I now use. I changed my name on with the banks and at IRD. With IRD I use their internet service so just advised them on that. Ive hardly had to use my marriage licence as i don't often have to show id. My passport is still valid for another 8 years so Im not changing that. its no big deal to travel in my maiden name. Names at accommodation can still be the married name, just the tickets cant.
Ill change my drivers licence at some stage.

sounds like you'll be fine as you are changing your passport before you travel and its not long until you'll have some photot id. It's been a while now but I do remember that it took about 6months to get everything sorted. The utility companies were the worst!

Definitely don't assume anything! IRD are as useful as tits on a bull most of the time.

I have changed my name, but hardly changed ANY ID - mainly because my ID still had 3-4 years on both of them (drivers licence and passport). The main problem I've had is your signature - if you change your signature, people like to have an official copy of that somewhere. I've also had to register at a few places (ie NZ blood service) under my maiden name, as that's the only ID I have. You're still legally entitled to use both names. So once you remember what Id you'll be using for what then you it's all sweet.

My passport is still in my maiden name and I just travel under that name. I flown once under my married name and my marriage certificate was enough to cover that.

Also only having residency in NZ I have to show my passport   numerous times to verify my residency and I've never had any problems.
That's with my passport showing my shortened first name & maiden name and my marriage cert showing my official first name & married name

As your drivers licence and passport are the main forms of acceptable id, these will need to be changed.

Ditto what Katherine said, the name on the tickets must match the name on the passport, they can refuse to take you.

Your passport usually has to be valid for 6 months from date of travel.

Thanks guys. I already have been at the bank with the wedding certiicate, so just the other things to do. Liscence expires in 3 years, I hardly ever use it for ID, so I might just leave it, but my passport expires in march next year, so it will be renewed before we traveln married name.

i promised DH i would change things (except work) when they expired....licensed expire about 6 months later...bugger! passport yet to expire but we will change that before we do big travel plans again.

Just make CERTAIN when you travel that the name on your air tickets match your passport, and carry your passport as identification if your driver's licence has a different surname. If you want to change things like the name on your bank account or credit cards, you will need to take your marriage certificate into the bank and show someone in order to do so, so don't put it in a frame just yet... Basically, tell everyone who has your details with your maiden name. Assume nothing! Ok, so I have changed my name on my bank acc's. Do I need to ring IRD or are they all lined up with Births deaths marriages? Should I change my drivers liscence? it has 3 years to go on it. Does anyone know the cost? I will change my passport soon as it runs out next year and we are off on a belted honeymoon to Fiji before then. What else who else to tell??? HELP???
