Very worried about the whole transfer thing in the middle of the night. As it was I didnt transfer and got 8 days at CWH and I found them brilliant!!!

But....I dont think transferring would have been too bad either as

a) you have to move even if you stay at CWH...you have to get cleaned up, change beds and move up to the 5th floor.

b) you dont think about anything other than your baby

c) you wont feel tired....too much adrenalin. Tiredness kicks in a little later

d)by the time you get to your location and settle in you will finally be coming down off the highest of highs and ready to get to know your baby.

Also...if I had transferred it would have been in the evening. I thought all babies arrived in the middle of the night. My labour started at midnight but Tom arrived at 6pm

Trust me.....it will be ok on the day/night

Caprece came out so fast and she wasn't breathing but they all handled it really well and I didn't even notice. Jacks labour was so long and drawn out I was glad I was at burwood cos if I was at womens my mw said they probably would of tried to speed things up which wouldn't of helped and just made things more painful for me. But I can totally understand wanting to have bubs at cwh. My plan with Jack was to start off at burwood and if things got too much for me we would be straight to chch womens.

I arrived at burwood at around 4am while in labour with Caprece and they were so nice and had someone waiting at the door to take me up in a wheelchair. A freinds cousin got transferred to Rangiora in the middle of the night and the poor dh was driving about 30kph along the motorway because he was so tired and so scared driving with bubs but when they got to the hospital they staff were waiting at the door and had hot drinks and food for everyone, so getting transferred is probably better than having to stay at womens.

We had planned on using a local birthcentre in Hamilton but because of blood pressure issues I got hospitalised 1 day before EDD. They had to put me into the Post-Natal Ward my first night, as Ante-Natal was full. So there I was, the only pregnant person on the whole ward! Once talk of inducement started plans to deliver at the birthcentre went out the window, but I was still hopeful that I would be able to transfer back - the birthcentre has a 12 hour transfer rule, and a 48 hour stay rule. Luckily they managed to get me onto to ante-natal ward the following day - where I spent the next 4 nights and then went into labour my myself. By that stage that ward was full - I couldn't get into a private room to labour when I asked after somewhere between 21 and 31 hours of labour (not fully realising it) - luckily I was 8-9cm by that stage and they took me down to the delivery suite then. After bubs arrived I was back on the post-natal ward. Because of the 'damage' I had recieved the hospital were not prepared to discharge me, so back to a full ward once more. For the next 4 days they were full up again - room for 24 mums and 24 bubs, and at one stage had 24 mums and 27 bubs!!

I also think they can't really expect people to use the birthing units when they don't cater for emergencies and you can't have an epidural.

Personally I was gonna birth at Burwood, my m/w was part of the burwood team, my pregnancy had been going along without any problems and i was open to the idea of not using pain relief but I more than understand why many women would not be comfortable with that.

As someone who spent 4 weeks at CWH, 3 before and 1 after I can assure you that the hospital could be run a whole lot better and that it should have been built a whole lot bigger.

Part of the reason this was done is because birthing units like Lincoln, Burwood, Rangiora were being under utilised and were facing closure.

Most people I have spoken to have enjoyed being trabsferred as the other places are not to hospital like so they can actually start to relax.

One of the midwifes when I was in before having Spencer said they could have put a whole extra floor on the hospital and still not had enough space.
Is so silly, and there was a thing on Campbell just after I had Spencer about it and the guy from the DHB said they were better than most countries, what a crap response, so were better than the third world, we should be trying to be world leaders no just not being at the bottom of the pile.

I can't believe that they built the new hospital to be the same size as the old one, what the hell is that about, how much did they pay a consultant for that piece of wisdom?

Burwood is really lovely me and Spencer spent a couple of nights there, they were really helpful and you get a lot more one on one attention if you need it, or they leave you alone if thats what you want.
