From listening to my midwife mother warble on foryears I have learnt: second babies are generally 'easier' births but if it is a different dad the births don't follow the same pattern as the first one as the genetic makeup of bubba is different!

Anyway, my thoughts on the whole birthing process... it hurts like nothing else no matter how long the birth is, I had a 10lb baby in about five hours with no tears, according to the text books that is an easy birth but it still hurt. BUT at the end of it all, you get a baby which is worth any ammount of pain!! And already I have forgot that it even hurt and want to do it all again!!

My midwife told me that they don't let you go longer than 12 hours in labour so when I started having contractions on the Wed afternoon I was excited thinking my baby would be here by the morning.

Not even! 41 hours later (the first 30-something at home), an epidural and some syntocinon later and baby finally arrived. They let me go so long because Maya wasn't distressed and the contractions were quite irregular. After 30+ hours I was only 5cm dilated. But after all of that, my 9lb baby flew out with no stitches, so yes the labour was hard, but the birth was a piece of cake.

Try not to stress too much about it, as that will make it harder for you. I was really worried prior to labour as we knew Maya was big and she was posterior presenting, but after all the worry, it wasn't so bad at all in the end.

Good luck, only a few more weeks till you can hold your baby!

And after that you'll have your brand-new baby in your arms!! Also, even if you have a lot in common, it doesn't mean that labour will be the same. I don't think genetics plays an overally large part in the birthing process, althgouh am guessnig a little here.
