We have the most hideously over tired baby here after a day of very little nap time. Any tips for teaching kids how to sit down (from standing) and lie down (from sitting)? Thanks guys. The thing is she is moving into these positions in her sleep. She doesn't move about at all before falling to sleep. Thankfully she LOVES bedtime and never says a word about it...just silence or happy chatting :) I emailed Louise at the sleep store as I wasn't sure whether to keep her in her go-go bag (as she gets in a tangle) or move her out of it until the stage passes but she said it is a phase, related to the brain practicing various milestones during the dream phase of sleep and hence will pass.

Yep I think they have hahahaha, that exactly what Alize does, chattes to himself and his teddies then blissful silence. Of course I check on him and he is wedged himself up into he corner on his hand and kness or jammed his head up agaist the side of the cot cross ways lol

Me and my friend have completely different kids so I will explain both the scenarios and what we did
Olivia: Huge panic artist mother had her in a safety sleep from about 5 months due to her rolling around the cot, I didn't want her to bump her fontanel. She had always grizzled to sleep and when it came to the safety sleep needing to come off the bed (it was becoming a restraint rather than an enabler), we had to go through a weaning process of about 4 nights of hell and 2 weeks of general unsettledness. We hit fever pitch with going to sleep so I started putting her down with a bottle which hence forth solved all problems and she has been a kick arse sleeper ever since.
Casey: Cruisy mother who never bothered with a safety sleep as it made her scream blue murder, usually let her grizzle to sleep as well. Casey hit 14 months and started staying awake in bed so all stimulation was taken down from the side of the cot. Things progressively got worse and she is at 20 months now and in a big bed with the door shut because she managed to start scaling the cot and just climbing out of bed.

I personally think it is different kids and there is a lot of major factors that go along with that. Casey is getting closer to the 2 year age and is sleeping less and less and will just probably be one of those kids that gets enough sleep at night (she sleeps really well at night) than during the day. Olivia isn't the greatest sleeper at night and usually loves going to bed to have a bottle, she will probably carry on her naps for a while yet.

My suggestion would be to see if you can keep her moving for a little bit longer, on top of her just being a type of kid, maybe she could be displaying signs of boredom. Olivia has needed a lot more stimulation when she dropped down to one sleep a day as well, this is when I bumped up activities like going to the playground and enrolling in coffee group for extra stimulation. I also stick to the same bed times, she is in bed by 7.30-8pm at night and sleeping for no more than 12hrs and 12-12.30pm in the afternoon and no longer than 2.5hrs for a nap. Sounds rather anal but it stops sleep cutting into other sleep and sticks to a routine that she is stuck in.

I love safety sleeps, IMO they were totally worth the $80 they cost me (I think I paid $120 for Maya's one, they were even more expensive back in the 'old days' ) coz they gave me peace of mind, I got 7-8 months of good use out of them, and used one of them for Maya then a gremlin, and still got $45 each when I sold them.

Safety sleeps are ridiculously expensive! My MiL made us 2 from calico for less than the cost of 1 in the shops

I saw those sheet zipper thingys and they look a good idea, but $80 is just too much I think for new parents and most on 1 income

the only child I used a safety sleep with was Rhyley and that was only because a friend of mine gave me hers - I would never of brought one. I did find it hard (or rather RHyley did) weaning off the safety sleep and probably won't use one if we had another. As with kels they weren't around when my other two were babies.

Hmmm, I wonder if that sheet would have counteracted the problem then. They were still pretty mobile in that they could move left and right really easily, they just couldn't really stray from the centre part of the cot. It may have helped to get them used to sleeping in the centre of the bed given that they still had the ability to move around a bit. I'm starting to see the benefit of it more now.

The poor lady there demo-ing it. We were right near her on the coffeegroup stand and when I spoke to her on Friday afternoon she hadn't sold a single sheet set. Those stands at the Parent & Child Show are expensive so I think she was getting pretty discouraged. Oh that doesnt sound too bad once you put it like that. I find thou that using things to keep kids in place while asleep doesnt let them develop their own sense of movement and security when sleeping so if she was to get one for Elle then she would still go thru the same thing when trying to stop using a zip sheet to keep her in place.  Im sure i HAVE seen posts on here where poeple have tried removing the likes of safe t sleeps and have had to put them back on b'cos the kids cant settle. JUst my opinion tho as I have older children and the likes of these fancy new things were never around then.

Yup pretty much. It was like a cross between a sleeping bag and a safety sleep. There were two layers to the sheet and I think there were little sleeves or something. At the parent and child show there was someone that was selling sheets that you zipped your child into. It was an alternative to a safety sleep and allowed your child to roll left and right but still kept them relatively centred in their cot. It looked like a great idea. I didn't buy one because I haven't needed it yet, but after reading this thread I'm wondering whether I should have. They were right near the coffeegroup stand. Rhyley is the same as Alzie in that he is all over the cot when he goes to sleep.. sometimes it right at the bottom near the door others its up the top (and i mean right up the top you wouldn't think he could get any higher 9see attached picture) but I just leave him to it.

I found a safety sleep didn;t stop him as he wriggled out of it or got sideways and very uncomfortable it made it worse.

So my advise is to go with it like kels said and leave her to it she will sort it out herself.. AH just part of growing up.

I would just go with it Fiona as she will soon learn that when she wakes up she will be in a different position but still in her cot and getting a safe t sleep will just delay the envitable (sp?) as Emma said her gremlins did the same thing when theirs was taken off. It may take a few days for her to get used to waking in slightly weird positions but she will get used to it. As Emma said using the bags are great to keep them warm but I dont have one I dress Alize up warm. A few times he has travelled so much in his sleep he has woken up cold as he has walked himself out of his jammy pants lol

The gremlins started that as soon as I took the safety sleeps away, and they still sleep in some weird and wonderful positions. Sleeping bags are a brilliant invention coz they'd never keep a blanket on!

She seems to go to sleep in one place but move in her sleep and wake up scared. It's now 2pm and she has only had 20mins sleep as everytime she drops off, she wakes up in some funny position. I went thru the same stage with Alize and he always had wedged his head into the top of his cot. He would go to sleep wailing and wimpering and of course when I saw him up in the corner I would try and move him and make him comfy BAD IDEA! They seem to by themselves realise/learn that getting themselves into these weird and uncomfy situations arent the best of sleeping in and do actually learn how to position themselves when going to sleep. Now Alize sleeps all over the place and I just let him be. It didtn take very long either, but be Aware that Elle could be getting herself into this position as she knows you will come. I say just go with it and she will wake up and not be scared when she gets used to waking in different positions. Goodluck and you are sooo lucky she hasnt moved around till now

Sorry! I'm on a roll with my questions this week. Elle has JUST started to move around in her bed...yeap, for 14mths she stayed exactly where we placed her...bliss!

Take this morning for example... was was up for her usual 2hours then got all clingy and grizzling, rubbing the eyes and yawning. Put her down and she looked like she was dropping off. A few minutes later the chatting starts and 30mins later the wailing starts as she has got herself in a weird and wonderful postition (e.g. on all fours in her go-go bag) and can't lie back down. At this point the nap is over BUT we have a very tired little girl. If she does got to sleep, she seems to move into strange positions when in her dream sleep and then wakes up scared as she's stuck.

I very much doubt it's time to drop a nap as she is shattered after 2 hours up first thing. I think the problem is that she get's up and gets stuck.

I know this will pass but my quesiton is how long did it take for this stage to pass for you and did you do antything specific to help it along? I'm a lil' grumpy as I was meant to be at church with Elle and DH but as she didn't nap when she was first tired, I'm now stuck here while she sleeps.
