I needed heaps! I took a pack of stayfree and libra and used the ones from the hospital and then had DH bring me in a packet more or less each day.

i was sore and wanted the stayfree ones. I wouldn't buy too many either. I found I really only needed for the first 7 days or so and was still in hospital so used theirs. You can sneak some out from the hospital too (pretty sure they'll let you take some). I went for the Pams generic brand and I tried the Stayfree ones..(preferred the Pams) you get 10 or 12 in a packet for $3-$4, they had wings too and had good coverage.

I only needed about two packs of the stayfree maternity pads (and they are labelled 'maternity'). Then I moved to Libra ones. Hey Liffaty, I bought loads of maternity pads and still have a few packs cos you don't really need that many. Most hospitals supply them while you are there and for me the first 3 days were the worse after that it was only like any period and by two weeks mine had stopped altogether. I used the cushy ones only for about a week or maybe two. After baby is born it's nice to have the extra thickness of a pad against all the swollen bits . The Libra ones seem quite thin for maternity pads! They would be ok after the first few days tho. If you are really worried about the cost how about making some cloth ones? I know there is some mums that make these to wash and they say they work awesome.

On the maternity pads. For the first week yeah you will need them. They are great however. I even use one over the cesear scar to make sure there is no moisture near the wound. And I think in the long run the other pads will cost you more expensive. They are different because they have more absorbency and they're longer (30cm!). My m/w said make sure I got mat pads not just normal ones as they tend to make you feel like you've got more 'coverage' in case you bleed a lot. I've only bought 4 packs as thats enough (apparently) for the 'average' person but I can always send DH out for more if need be!

Saaawry if this question should be in another chat area ... but I figure most people in General have had babies, so would know more than if I asked in the pregnancy area.

I understand you need maternity pads for once the baby is born ... but they are super expensive! 

Do they differ much from normal ones?  I was in the supermarket yesterday and found two brands that stated "maternity pads" Libra and some other brand ... each about $7.00 a packet and there were only 7-10 in the packet!
