That is why i had to have a swab done while in labour to check for Strep infection (none found). Sounds like you are getting really good monitoring though so that's all good. Best of luck for your last four weeks, lets hope Ethan stays put for at least a couple more!

Tastic, it's great that you would receive so much monitoring next time around! Because there was no reason for our early arrival and we technically had a 'normal' pregnancy and labour i won't get any special or extra monitoring . Hopefully our premmie was a oncer, if i'm like a lot of other women in my family my first will be my only prem (found out that 3 first cousins, grandmother and great-grandmother all had premmies for their first)! Hopefully it just runs in the family.

My sister had a 3yr old, 18mth old and then baby born 27weeks so had a horrible time. Plus to top it off they didnt have any room for her, well him in the NICU and so she was in hospital here on strict bedrest from 25 weeks then when she went into labour and they couldnt stop it they had to fly her down to dunedin! Times like that you realise how important family is thats for sure. I spent heaps of time up at the hospital with him cos i know how horrible it is having to leave your baby there, its just not right leaving the hospital with no baby. Was soooo strange when I had addison and she never left my side where as with Kobe I didnt get to be with him properly till he came home.

You wouldnt even know he had a cleft to look at him now, it was only minor though and his speech is within the normal range although a little behind, we have gone through speech therapy though and they were happy with it, said it was just on the lower end of the scale. Author: babyg
Subject: 12211
Posted: 10 January 2008 at 4:05pm

Yeah, that's the problem my2angels - we have no idea why our girl came early! I had a very easy pregnancy (except i had bleeding from burst blood vessels all the way through), no signs of pre-eclamps, diabetes, high b/p or anything. No infection was present at birth either and i don't have any cervix or uterine abnormalities at all! And the stink thing is - because I technically had a 'normal' pregnancy and delivery and because Carys is 100%, i wont get any monitoring next time around, just the usual pregnancy monitoring (i guess they wouldn't know what to be looking for anyway)! So it's anyone's guess what will happen next time around - will just have to be prepared!

They are pretty pedantic about keeping premmies in here in Taranaki Kawwww. In general, they keep them until their EDD, but definitely don't let them go until baby is well above birthweight, off all monitors and has been BF (without weight loss) for 3days! Carys lost 10% of her birth weight and came back to birth weight at 2wks old. In Taranaki they don't let you exclusively BF if baby is under birth weight or has jaundace and because our girl held onto her jaundace, i couldn't start BFing until day 18. Lucky she took really well to it we were allowed out three days later. The nurses still weren't impressed that the Paed had let us go though, they wanted us to stay till our EDD but i would've discharged us before then anyway as Carys was doing so well. She was born 4lb 14oz and went home 5lb 10ozs. From what i hear, they are much tougher on premmies here than in other parts of the country!

Looking forward to hearing your 'good' news in the next few weeks Kawwww - you'll both be fine.

I found it really helpful with some good information. My homecare nurse gave it to me so it must be fairly accurate. I would say just to use your innitiative with starting. You will know better than anybody when your baby is ready and will you notice some of the cues listed on the website I linked. My son was born at 34+3 and is now 5 and a half months old. He was also a big boy for gestation, born 5 1/2 pounds. And has met most of his mile stones on time or early for his gestational age. Other mile stones he has been a bit slow with, but we just allow another six weeks for piece of mind. (Rolled early but just started laughing)
We spent 5 days in NICU, 24 hours on CPAP and breastfed after 48 hours. We had another two days in a maternity ward befor heading home and felt incredibly lucky to have been looked after by such great staff at Middlemore and our local maternity unit.

As for solids. Well we have been told to treat Joel like any other baby his age now but have never actually seen anyone about specifically starting solids. I agree on the concern for maturity of his gut, and so my thoughts were that we would leave him until 6 months of age when he needs the iron and when he will be about 5 months corrected.
So far so good.

Carys was born 33+3days @ 4lb, 14ozs - 48cm long.

But she's doing so well that she kinda doesn't feel like she could ever have been a premmie. She's about 5wks behind in size but developmentally is at least at her birth age (and a little advanced in some areas).

My question - when do we start solids? Her Paed said to treat her like any typical fulltermer when we left hospital 10wks ago and Plunket have said that because she's doing so well there's no reason we can't start giving her solids from 5mths if she is ready! Does this not sound wrong to any other prem mums?? I don't really know what to think - just because she is doing well, doesn't necessarily mean that her gut is at the maturity of other babies of her birth age!

We see the Paed only once since leaving hospital (in a wk and will ask her but would like opinions from mums as well).

Would love to chat with mums of new premmies - any around????

Cheers
