Just a thought to help with the milk going everywhere... I used to have that happen with Kiya, so I would express off into a flannel for a minute or so, just until it stopped gushing out and she could drink without drowning. Maybe something like that will help.

And to second what someone else said (to lazy to go and look who) my midwife with Xavier told me that babiesget most of their needs met in the first 5 minutes regardless of milk flow (Xavier was a very efficient feeder who never fed for more than 8-10 minutes a side)

Brenna was a major power chucker each feed for ages and she also struggled to keep up with all my milk as it just poured out too! There's not much you can do, just when changing her nappy place a small pillow/cushion under her so that she's not lying totally flat (helps keept he milk down) and I also did the same in her bassinet.

In the end I just had to wait for to her outgrow it

Sounds a bit like Daniel was in the beginning. I was told by so many people that babies who are breastfed get 80% of their feed in the first 5 mins of feeding so 10 mins should be long enough for her to have a really nice feed.

I haven't read the other posts (too lazy lol) but what if you tried stopping her part way through and giving her a quick burp and then letting her feed some more? Thanks for your ideas ladies.

I am pretty sure I only have one let down from when I was expressing at the beginning to bring my milk in. Sometimes she will suck, swallow, suck swallow, suck swallow and then choke and have to have a big cough. I am pretty sure my let down is just so fast that she can't cope and it doesn't register with her that she's full until she's too full and is sick.

I just had a chat to my Mum and she had the same problem with my brother and she actually had to lie flat on her back so he had to suck up to feed him as it just poured into his mouth otehrwise.

I am the same, mine squirts her in her eyes and runs down my tuumy and makes a blimmin mess!!

Good idea about keeping her upright for longer too, might try that!

Have you tried siting her up and facing you when feeding, this might help her with your fast letdown. Also try burping her half way through (5mins), then carry on. Also keep her upright for about 15mins after a feed.

Madison is a bit of a spewer and i just burp her more and keep her upright. Hey Peachy, Spencer use to puke a lot as well and sometimes it would shoot out of his nose...lol. It has calmed down now. I was like you and had tons of milk and would be pretty much spraying him in the face and we were both soaked at every feed (not good for feeding in public). I would say that 10mins is probably enough especially as you have a fast let down and it does sound like she is just spilling up the extra. You can always try offering her the boob after she has spilled to make sure she isn't still hungry.
As for the hindmilk, I think it is different for each women, I know that when I expressed I would actually get 3 or 4 letdowns in 10 mins, the first would be very watery and then the others were thicker so i'm guessing they were the hindmilk. If you express perhaps watch and see what you do? Some women only have one letdown so you may just be watching for a change in colour and consistency, that will give you an idea how long she needs to feed to get the hindmilk. Just remember she will empty you quicker than expressing. I think I read that they get greenish poos if they are only getting foremilk as well, plus she would want to feed more cos she wouldn't be getting enough calories. Sounds like a stupid question, but until recently Lauren was hardly ever sick after feeding and only had the occassional burp.

Now if I let her feed for longer than 10 minutes on one side she will be quite sick afterwards. Is this normal or is she just too full? The m/w suggested she was too full as she is quite a greedy feeder.

As for my milk, I have so much milk I could feed a day care centre and my let down is super fast and Lauren struggles to keep up with the flow wtih it pouring out the sides of her mouth which consequently makes a mess of her and me, so no issues there, apart from all the washing it creates!

Do you think that 10 minutes on one side is enough, my feeling is that it seems to be?? But will she be getting enough hindmilk, how long does the foremilk (think thats what its called) last before the hindmilk comes through.
