I would contemplate, if you can afford it, going and getting the scan (from memory mine were about $140ish?), but like you said, they can't really tell but if they think its likely to be endo, the gynae's appts are usually about $150 each time I think? Cervix and Overies are completly different when it comes to cancer. That may push you up the list.

Waiting lists in Palmy to see a gyne is about a year.

I don't know how long the waiting list is in your area but the first time for me it was only around a fortnight to see the hospital specialist after being referred by my GP and then I had the scan within the week. I was then put on the waiting list for surgery (they couldn't see much in the scan) and had surgery about 4 months later.
I would think if they see any family history of ovarian cancer things would move alot faster though.

Marisa, we probably could afford to pay for u/s, that's something we'll consider when we have an idea of the waiting time, but if it's endo then from what I've heard it's unlikely to show up on u/s anyway. I can't see that we could afford to do the whole lot privately

Busymum they make you sign a declaration and list all previous and current medical problems that you have and these are then not covered by your policy.

We have just been through this last week as we had to take up private medical insurance as I left my job and the company I worked for had taken care of all our medical insurance up until I left in September.

So unfortunately you will probably not be covered, but give Southern Cross a call, no harm in asking! Hey, you can't get insurance for something that is even suspected. I have digestive problems that were undiagnosed and the only way I could get medical insurance was with them excluding everything from the mouth to the exit.
As for going private specialist prices vary from about $100 to $300, sometimes I have seen a specialist privately and then been referred for treatment on the public system.
If there is a history of ovarian cancer in your family I would expect them to put you on the urgent waiting list for the u/s and then if anything looks suspect I would expect you would see a specialist pretty damn quick. Is there anyway you could pay to have the u/s done privately to help fast track the process?

I recently went to my GP (well actually a locum) for pelvic pains and am now on a waiting list for an ultrasound to rule out fibroids or similar. Everything seems to have the same symptoms but fibroids and ovarian cancer are the only things I know of in the family. However, I'm starting to think that maybe it's endo.

Anyway I don't have med insurance so it's all public. Is it too late to apply for med insurance when the doc has no idea what's wrong (if at all - but I'm positive that there is)? How long is all the waiting likely to take by the time I have u/s, see the GP again, and perhaps get referred to a specialist or for a laparascopy?
