What a tough decision Anna. It is never just as easy as pro s and con s either is it?
Being a teacher, I would also take into consideration how 'balanced' you think you can manage to be with full time work. I know that relieving doesn't have as much security but if you get enough it is still good money and comes without all the extra stresses of reports, meetings, parent teacher things etc etc. I guess it all comes down to the school culture and workload too and whether you can manage it and switch off at the end of the day to still have family time. (and family time that is quality)
Someone mentioned the holidays and that is really true. At least you would know that every ten weeks you would get two weeks at home.
WOuld be great if you could get a permanent part time position like a PRT release or classroom release job or something but like you said it is harder to get that when the school is small.
I think that whatever you decide will be the right one. I know I really miss teaching and having my own class etc. I have decided to stick with relieving until I have had another child and then go back full time later once they are a wee bit bigger but I think it all depends on when you want to have another bubba - like you said. Working for a year and then having another year off later is great too. Such a personal decison and only you know what is right for you. Good luck lovely one!

Part timers would get their holidays paid differently, instead of having every school holiday off paid you would only have 8% of your earnings as holiday pay.

I work part time and get paid for holidays, why wouldn't you get paid them? Holidays are just worked out on the number of hours you work aren't they? My company even pays me stat days for days I wouldn't even normally work, and then the rest I just accrue as I work. Me personally I would take option 1. I went back to fulltime work after having Andrew when he was 5 months old, at first I had issues but once I got over them I was fine with working. And Brenna will love spending time with her grandmum so a win win situation.

We've pretty much decided to not worry about our mortgage too much until the kids are a bit older.

Do you get WFF and Accom Suppl? Could you get a job-share position (as in are you applying for a new job?), or is this a position you are already on maternity leave from? Sorry don't know the history!

You could always try and get 2-3 release days for teachers so it's permanent part-time, you know what days you're working etc, and although it'll only be half the pay, it's twice as much time you spend with your daughter?

We have to make the decision next year if I BEGIN my teaching career the year after bubs is born, or if we struggle financially for longer and hence can't finish our house and have baby #2, then go into part-time work gradually increasing the hours. She has said that she'll hire a car seat and then she can take her places (she's not keen on driving my car). She wants to take her to playcentre, music, toy library - the works! We would like to have the next baby being born within a couple of months of the end of the school year (so this would only be a one year working stint)

I guess on paper full time looks more beneficial. And you are lucky in the fact that you get heaps of holidays so you would just need to make sure you spend lots of quality time with Brenna during the holidays

How long until you hope to have the next baby? If in 15mos then I can see it working. If in 2-3 yrs then you'll have to work a long time before having baby and therefore the maternity leave you're wanting.

Do you HAVE to work or just want the extra income? Wow chick, so many decisions aye, we are in this mode at the moment too, and I have been applying for jobs for the past two weeks, it's so hard, we would like to get out of debt and the only way is for me to go back to work, I have had 4 years at home with my two combined and will miss them to bits, but for us to get ahead then we need to do it, my dh is gonna stay at home for a few months with the kids then look for a better job as he is on min wage , which means we need to move house again back into town we are currently living near we he works but financially will be better to move back into town which we have sorted with hopefully a bit cheaper rent than we are paying at the moment, ideally we really want to go to oz but that is not gonna happen till maybe late next year if it does.

I'm not sure, if your planning on having another baby in the near future I would take option 1and as you can go and I like that you can go see her at lunchtime.

The thing that I wouldn't like about relieving is that you don't know when your going to work so seems a bit of a hassle.

Also just noticed that you have pros for option 1 than option 2 so thats how I would choose if it were me.

I guess I'm more just writing my thoughts out here in the hope of making a decision about work... (warning: it's long!)

There are 2 options for next year:
1. Go back full time
2. Go back part time (relieving)

Positives of (1)
*Entitled to sick days with pay and maternity pay and leave when we have an other baby
*Wont have to pay for child care (this goes for part time too)
*The job is only 1 minute from my house
*I wont have to take Brenna anywhere (she'll be looked after at home)
* I can come home at lunchtime to see Brenna
* We can save $20 000 in one year to put onto mortgage

Negatives of (1)
*Soooo much time away from my girl!
* I'll be super tired

Positives of (2)
*Flexible days

Negatives of (2)
*No guaranteed work
*Relieving can be damn hard!
* No sick pay or maternity pay


Anyway, can you tell I'm really confused??????? I don't know what to do!

What would you do?
