I personally wouldn't put bubs to sleep on tummy until they can roll there themselves and can roll back. I seem to remember being told that from around 5 months they are usually ok to sleep on their tummys.

I quiet often go in and find Sam on her tummy or knees.
In saying that she usually rolls, shuffles herself to the very top of the cot and curls up with her soft toys. It is always very cute
If she does get horribly stuck she will definitley let us know.
I figure she is in a sleeping bag so the blankets are with her, so just let her go for it. Sometimes (depending on how tired she is) she lets me tuck her in with a sheet overtop of her.

Ok thanks...will try giving her 'free rein' in the cot and see what she does. At the moment she is mainly arching her back and moving onto her side (she hasn't yet figured out how to roll from her back to her tummy, thank goodness) when I put the safety sleep on. 

At what age is it considered safe for a baby to sleep on their tummy?

I agree with what the other's have said. Paris had a safety sleep and once she learnt how to get out of it, we even resorted to pinning the velcro closed.. she still learnt how to get out of that!

With ayja we never used it as she hated it, she has always been an active sleeper, we go in sometimes to find her sleeping with both legs out the bars, the only thing holding her there is the bar between her legs! (ouch) when we go to bed we move her and tuck her back in.. when we had the side off her cot - (before the mischief saga that resulted in it getting put back on for a while) we would find her asleep on the matress on her floor that we put so she wouldn't hurt herself falling out of bed, other times she'd look as if she were praying, sleeping on her knees with her tummy on her bed.. other times she'd have rolled right off and obviously off the matress and be curled up on the floor!

Now obviously - she's an exception in that she's a more than active sleeper and also sleep-walks, though i must say that it proves that if they want to do it, they're gonna. The thing i realised with the safety sleep is yes - it's meant to keep them in one position - however, just think, if she gets into an unsafe position in that safety sleep then can't get out it's not really that good.

yeah why restrict her...she wont hurt herself too much...ella bumps occasionally...but nothing major! It is all part of the discovery process....moving around. Ella has arms and legs hanging out...I go in if i hear her get stuck - she grunts trying to get leg out...yet no injury!

Ella goes upsside down to the side, face down...she moves around so much it is incredible - but she sleeps 12 hours straight so I dont care...and i have monitor on. Ditto Briona was moving around a lot at that age too and pulling herself to standing in another month's time! I would personally just let her go for it but then I've never used safety sleeps anyway.

I wouldn't put cot bumpers up just yet because she probably wouldn't be able to move herself out of the way if one went over her face. Last week Ella started pushing herself around her cot and I got the biggest shock when I went to see her in the middle of the night to find she had turned herself around so that her legs were banging against the side of the cot.

After that I started putting her in the safe T sleep (in a sleeping bag) and seems to be doing the trick.....however I don't think she is that keen on it and sometimes when I go in and see her she is turning her body trying to get out it (not to mention she keeps trying to undo the velco and has nearly suceeded once). I don't want to take her out of the safe T sleep since I am really worried about her banging her head on the side of the cot, but if she hates being in it I don't want to leave her in it either.

Has anyone got any other suggestions for what I could do? My main concern is her safety and I don't mind if she moves about in her cot, as long as I know that she can't hurt herself....I know you can get cot bumpers, but was told by my Plunket nurse not to use one.
