It is still pretty early days, chances are he just isn't ready. When bubs refuses the standard advice is to stop for 3 days then try again. it can take over 10 tries before they get used to the taste.

With farex, loads of babies don't like it (try some yourself yuck!) so don't feel you have to use it at all.

Remember that some of the fruits are not sweeter than veges - pumpkin and kumara can be much sweeter than apples (especially the canned ones which are quite tart).

Hayley had her rice cereal real runny, she used to gag on the food if it wasn't smooth or "thin" enough... she loved cooked pears mashed in the blender...apple she just spits out. now she eats anything...

He doesn't open his mouth when I go close with a spoon but he watches me eating with great interest and makes chewing motions when I put something in my mouth. When I try to put a spoon in his mouth he jams it shut, stubborn little bugger, or he opens it nicely but spits everything straight out again. Make sure that the farex (or whatever) is pretty much the same consistency as milk to begin with so drips off spoon when you tilt it. Gradually mix less formula to increase thickness. Try a spoon that is recommended for 4+ months as they are reasonably flat and very soft.

Is he showing other signs of being ready for solids? Does he open his mouth when you go close with a spoon? Watch you eating with interest? Have good head control?
I agree with Deb:
if he sticks out his tongue when you give him the spoon then he isnt ready (the extrusion reflus or something like that it is called)... and sucking food off a finger or bikkie isnt quite the same...

It's a latex weaning spoon, Heinz Baby Basics is the brand I think (I'm in Aus at the moment, bought it here). It feels really soft and looks really narrow to me.

What type of spoon is it? maybe you just need to try a smaller one or one from softer plastic. Watties make some tiny rubbery ones.
If he won't eat the kumara try mixing some formula (or water) with it to dull down the flavour. I was also gonna suggest letting him eat with his fingers till he gets a taste for it.

hehe, I felt like that...Bella was feeding off both breasts PLUS 3 extra 200ml formula feeds PLUS 2 night feeds before I started solids . What sort of spoon are you using? I use the Tommee Tippee ones that are red and yellow and change colour with hot temperatures, they are quite narrow so easy to fit in their little mouths. I've been making my own so far, although I do have some of the tinned stuff in the cupboard. Maybe I'll try making him some kumara today and seeing if he likes that better?

I tried him again this morning and it looks as though it's the spoon he objects to, rather than the food. He was quite happy to suck a (fairly runny) Farex and pear mix off my fingers.

He had 300mls AND solids for breakfast this morning (and he's not big for his age, exactly 50th percentile). that's interesting as Ella is exactly the opposite- loves the watties apples, but won't eat homemade. What brand of apples do you use at home?

Bella didn't like the farex either. I think I made it a bit lumpy the first time I tried her with it, so I waited a couple of days, and then tried again, but made it really runny and she ate it. Have to say though, its not her favourite food...kumara is at the moment. Perhaps just try the pears on their own (as they are really watery when pureed up). Sounds like he is ready for solids, Bella was exactly the same and she has taken to eating like a duck to water . And now she sleeps through the night again. I know she is young, but if they're ready, they're ready (otherwise its going to cost you a fortune in formula )

Hi Mikaela, I would keep persisting with the solids- pracice makes perfect as they say. I definitely think he would be ready with the amount of milk you go through.. Maybe the consistency is a bit thick for him at this stage. Do you mix with formula? I would be inclined to make up some really runny rice & let him sip it off the spoon till he gets the action down pact & the formula would be a familiar taste.

he may not be ready - just wait. and the first food should be almost watery and bland cause to him it will taste very different.

oh and just because he started night waking doesnt mean he is ready for solids...could be a growth spurt or the change in temperature, or any number of things...

I will give it a week or so, then try again.....when I gave Ella solids for the first time she got really excited and opened her mouth as soon as she soon the spoon, so I knew she was ready.

I would also suggest trying him with veges first- I read somewhere that it is better for them to have veges before fruit as fruit can be quite sweet for babies.

Ella started waking up several times in the night around that age as well....unfortantely even though she is on solids, she still wakes up at least once in the night for a milk feed.

He may not be ready yet as he's only 4.5mnths.. I'd give it a few days before trying again.

If you really feel he is ready though he might just not like baby rice. Daniel hates it and won't eat it and is much the same way with fruit. I started Alex on solids yesterday because I was pretty sure he was ready for them. He always used to sleep through the night but the last week or so he's been waking twice and been ravenous each time. He's now on 7 milk feeds a day (at least 200mls each, sometimes closer to 300mls), up from 5. He's 4.5 months.

Anyway, so far I've tried him with Farex, pears and Farex mixed with pears and the first two times every time I put it in his mouth he cried. The most recent try he didn't cry but he spat everything out again. Is he not ready for solids in that case? Am I doing something wrong?
