There may be a lot of disagreements! DH and I have spent nearly 12 months apart so even after him being home for 7 weeks now, we're still adjusting (doesn't help that I've had no time off with him).

I don't really have much advice, it just kind of 'happens' because you make it work. As for having more kids, you do cope :) DH was away when I had terrible MS with DD (lost 10kg), and I was in hospital with DS for over a month. We still got through but it was tough. I figure if I got through that, I can get through most things!

    Author: BeLoved
Subject: 12879
Posted: 10 July 2011 at 8:22pm

I am not a military wife, but DH and I spend months apart at a time due to his work, and as DD has got older (now 2.5) I have found it harder as she understands he is not there and its her that I worry about as she misses him so much. Our next baby is due in a couple of months and DH will leave to go away with 3 weeks of baby being born and will be gone almost full time for 7 months, goodness knows how it will all go, I know I will cope fine with the practical stuff you just do, but the emotional stuff, missing him, DD missing him and mostly DH missing out on all the new things with the new baby will be hard.

C&J - I find the best way to do it is one day at a time, and don't have high expectations of how it will be as it can be disappointing at times, try to remember that your DH is adjusting to being home as much as you are adjusting to having him home and enjoy it, as someone said above it is hard when you have got set into your own little routines and ways of doing things and living alone as such, but you do get use to it all over again. My DH went away when DD was about 5-6 months old for 2 months and she was soooo excited when she saw him for the first time when he got back, we got in on video and its gorgeous, they do remember their Dad's, she was beaming when she heard his voice. Hope the next couple of weeks go quickly.
Author: emz
Subject: 12879
Posted: 30 April 2011 at 12:44am

Bowie - deployments only get announced about 2 months prior in the army, so he'll only know now if he's confirmed to go. PDT (training) doesn't start til a month before they go. Where is he going for 6 months? I can't think of which trips go in July unless its a Sinai one or something?

It depends on their rank as well as to how often they're away on courses, exercises and deployments. DH is only a corporal cos he's always away so hasn't been able to do his courses to be promoted to Sgt (supposed to have been promoted this year). So that's why he's away a lot, usually 6 months of the year, then add deployments on that. When he was a private, it was 3 months plus deployments. I see no real need for me to complain, even though it's damn hard, but I chose this life and owe it to my kids to make the most of it

Caliandjack, DH loves his job when he's not so stretched and being torn from his family all the time. It's become pretty ridiculous lately in the army that he's considering getting out (been in nearly 11 years) but we'd rather he waits until he superannuates in 9 years. We'll see. Done the hard yards with babies, earthquakes etc so it should only get easier from here :)

My gripe is they're so pathetic with family needs, that they tried to send him on a 2 month course, only 2 weeks after getting back from this 6 month deployment DH said to break the news to me, and then don't be surprised if I ask for a divorce lol

I have to say that seeing DH off at the airport was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life, its so hard knowing hes so far away! I think I would feel a bit better if we were in the states, but we just have to suck it up!
Not to mention DD has had a shocking week with her molar trying to come through, so minimal sleep is happening here making it tough! Normally I got up to her in the night and DH got up with her when she woke (normally about 5.30am!) and I got to sleep for another 2 hours or so. Thats the toughest part for me so far. But in saying that DD and I are living with my mum since this joining the army thing has been in the pipeline for a bit and I didnt want to be left by myself.
Sorry for the ramble, its just so nice to find others who know what Im feeling/going through...
Ex/DS's dad is army and his stupid job is one of the many reasons we called it quits. However we're now back on very good terms and if i didnt know that he'd be away more then at home we'd probably be back on. I'm more concerned about how much he sees DS though. He is supposed to go on a deployment for 6months in July though apparently its a bit up in the air. He was on exercises training for this deployment for most of the pregnancy and was in fact lying under his truck in the west coast somewhere in the rain and mud on an exercise when i rang to say DS had been born.

I know DS is too young to really care now but i wonder how they are ever going to bond when we are seperated AND he is always away and they only see each other for a few hours when he passes through my town on his way too and from camp!

Bugger!

Yeah DH is doing sect commanders 9/6-3/8 I think. And yep he knew the guy that passed away, were in the same platoon last year. He was funeral guard for him. Apparently was a very moving funeral and the whole battalion gave him a haka as a send-off (which has family loved as they were South African's living here, so felt honoured to get a Kiwi send off).

Wow mrsg1, you can go and visit your DH on exercise? That seems nuts to me! I love the time when DH is away for 2-3 weeks, a bit of me time and the parents really help out with childcare if I fall behind at work. Don't get me wrong though, I love it when he gets back too.

T - the airforce definitely seems like a good option. At least N won't be away for 3-6 months of every year

Knowing that they get to come home for a visit is actually a nice relief though. I wouldn't mind taking the girls on a flight like that but the logistics of us leaving the airport (van, 3 carseats...) would be a right nuisance. And I get sea-sick LOL

DH is a soldier.

If you choose to move back to Burnham, they have now carpeted most houses and are putting heat pumps in (which is kind of stupid seeing as they get heaps of power cuts but never mind) and are slowly upgrading etc etc. About time really, Burnham has been behind the rest of the country for quite some time. Also, you would qualify for one of the better houses over a couple (without a child) applying as you will have a child. But your DH will lose pay if you move out there, so you have to weigh it up. Guys that live away from the housing area get about 6k more each year for the UAC. The benefit of the housing area is cheaper rent than market value. It does still work out cheaper though.

They're even trying to get existing members to switch over. Something about not being enough in the general fund to cover all the investments blah blah blah......DH said they bosses have been pushing hard to get the guys to switch over but there's no way as the employer contribution is way higher in the army scheme. The new pay structure effected their super scheme as well.

We're still ticked about the new pay structure. We don't get UAC cause we're in the housing area even though the guys in barracks get it. AND Dh spent 3 1/2 years becoming a fully quald chippie only to have them change the structure so a first year spr gets the same rate as him. Sorry for the rant.....just ticks me off.......they're messing with the guys already doing to work just o make it look appealing for new recruits. gggrrrrrrrr
