Author: BuzzyBee
Subject: 12930
Posted: 16 December 2007 at 12:17am

Lucas was able to sit up whilst supported with his breastfeeding (small tri-pillow) pillow since he was 2-3 months old, and then around 5-6 months I could place him in the sitting position on the floor with his toys and he could support himself!

Just recently in the past month he has started putting himself into the sitting position whilst he is crawling and rolling around or pulling himself up and walking along furniture/cot sides etc! He just started doing all these things in the last two weeks really ....quite scary how one day they are totally mobile...seriously just happened overnight. Now there's no stopping him!

In short, enjoy your bubs while you can and make the most of every moment with them, they grow so fast :(

I think 6 months is the general age for when most of them start to show signs of, or start sitting up without support! (say if you place them on ground like that). Some babies crawl first and put themselves to sitting position.

My boy did it opposite way and only started crawling properly on all fours yesterday. every bubs diff and thats what makes them so unique and beautiful each in their own way

Sorry for waffling on here, a bit bored at the mo haha

My friend's baby is two weeks older than Sam and has always been an awesome sitter upper! She doesn't fall over at all and has been doing this since about 4 months! Sam however is rolling all over the place, non stop and he backwards shuffles on his head and feet to get where he wants to go. He can't pull himself from the crawling to sitting position yet, but all babies are different and they reach all the milestones eventually, even back to front sometimes!

But could sit unsupported if I put him in a sitting position at maybe 5.5 months? He was never a roller either just started crawling around.

Caprece can sit unsupported for a wee bit but has to have pillows (or a big brother) behind her.

I think sitting up unsupported at 5 months is when they get put into that position, not get into on their own. You may find Alex is pretty good at sitting if you just have him on your knee or in the pram.

He had been practising getting up on his hands and kness and just suddenly sat up one day it was also not long before he actually started crawling. If we sat him in the sitting position before that he was not able to hold it for very long without support.

All babies do things when they are ready and at various times so dont worry at all. Ignore my little monster who does not know the meaning of sitting still so wants to do everything in a hurry. Most of his friends around his age still cant get to sitting on their own.

She also commando crawls (ha ha, it is so slow, she goes about 10 cm in about 20 minutes!)

The thing is both DH and I were early movers, I think i was walking at 9 months (god help me if that pattern continues!) and I do think there is a heritability component.

The important thing to realise is that in the scheme of things, it is really cool when they do new stuff, but it means nothing, unless there is a physical reason for a long delay.

    Author: LJsmum
Subject: 12930
Posted: 13 December 2007 at 8:35pm

Hi

just like everyone has said there is a huge range. The most important thing to remember is that he will do it when he's ready.

There is two ways either he is taught to sit, by propping him with up pillows. Or does it himnself usually rolls, crawls and while crawling they learn how to sit then pull to stand e.t.c. Both ways are fine. It's just what ever you want to do. I know some mum's who don't sit their babies and want them to explore on the floor first on tummy and back as they have more natural movement that way.

I have chatted to plunket about it and they say if not sitting unsupported by 10 months then start to worry. Tummy and floor time is more important than sitting. There is an excellent book on movement called baby moves can't remember whose it by but there is a website it's a nz book too.

So don't worry my babies 8 months and doesn't sit unsupported but he has excellent movement, rolls a lot and moves backwards, forwards on tummy and back.

Every babies different, my friends baby has just learnt to sit after crawling and he's 9 months.

I just plonk him down in the sitting position and he can nearly support himself, He will put his hands on the floor infront of him, but has a tendency to pull himself right forward and then rolls onto his back. The other thing I do is sit him on my tummy with his back resting on my legs at a slant, he then pulls himself forwards and puts his hands of my chest and laughs and dribbles all over me but it encourages him to keep his head up rather than getting distracted by his new favourite toy...his feet.

I hope that makes some sense. Non of the babies in my coffee group were sitting at 5 months and only one is now doing it at 6 months so I wouldn't panic yet and if he is trying to roll i'm sure he will do it soon. I like to give Spencer lots of naked time as he can move so much better than when in nappy and clothes.

As Kryssi got more and more interested in toys, we would prop her up either with us sitting behind her or with pillows, and little by little we discovered (in time) that she could stay on her own. As for getting there, all my girls have figured that out about the same time as crawling - because it's similar to crawling backwards and getting stuck lol

To be honest most of Sam's little friends are only just starting to sit on their own now at 7 months old.
As for getting themselves up there, that is a while off yet. I would imagine that will come at around the same stage as crawling.

I guess I am just trying to say that Alex is completely normal. When did your baby sit up unassisted?

Also, I can't quite picture the mechanics of it. Do they sit up from their back or their tummy? How does it work? Can I do anything to help him?
