Yeah, I have a friend who is trying to get into police college this year I think. Although she's mega fit (damn competitive athletes) but has a knee injury that I think she is a bit worried about.

It would be cool. Just gotta make sure you don't get too cynical!

Nikki, it is a definite possibility, was going to get my fitness on track for it this year until bubba came along - their requirements are quite strict and it takes a lot of training if you are not naturally fit. I have a few mates that are police officers, including one other chicky, and they love their jobs to bits. jax you can't go wrong with a german shephard very loyal dogs and very protective without being 'over protective' if ya know what i mean
they are actually the most popular breed in nz and golden retrievers came in either 2nd or 3rd, labs were the other top breed. Now that I think about it and have read over some of the recent posts, I think a German Shepherd would be quite a suitable dog for us, if we get one. I know hubby would like one eventually, but not until we are a bit more settled. We'd have to have a few less other pets as well I think, which is understandable.

we have a german shep who is great with kids tends to forget he has a tail and sometime knocks over the smaller ones
Our Samoyed is great to but is a bit of hard work with all the brushing that HAS to be done and he is very "talkative"
we had a black lab who unfortunalty was hit by a car a year ago but she was so great with the boys they useed to sit on her and poke and prod at her when she had enuff she just got up and walked off.

Clyde is just gorgeous.  I am a labrador/golden retriever sort of girl.  We had a lab but unfortunately had to be put to sleep with kidney failure when he was 3.  I'm positive that our daughter is the reincarnation of him because she just loves dogs, everything is 'woof woof' - even guinea pigs and my parents have a lovely natured little beagle and she follows it round everywhere.  We'll get another dog too at some point and you can bet your bottom dollar it will be a lab or retriever.  Lovely faces, lovely natures, boisterous and playful - just what growing, energetic kids need!

Well we have just brough a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy off a breeder in Hawkes Bay - Awesome dogs and grow about the same size as Lab's.
When you buy off a breeder you usually enquire before the puppy is born and explain your circumstances (kids, work, money etc) and they pick the best puppy for you, took me 2 litters to get mine and she is great with Arna. Only thing we have found is when puppy gets excited she jumps up on Arna - only playing but gives Arna a fright, but the lil cheeky girl knows how to tell Binti off and she listens!!
And do LOTS of research on the breed and also I recommend Puppy Pre-School (vet's usually have something) or Obediance course - especially with kids.

Hi Lizzle..You are going to love Gisborne I lived there all my life,we moved to Rotorua 2 yrs ago but visit regularly to see family and friends(i miss the sun)

It's definitely not too young, as long as you are meticulous about hygiene. I'm not planning on having a dog just yet (although I want one eventually), but all our cats will be around from the word go, as I really want my child to grow up around animals and at least learn how to respect and take care of them. Hi Lizzle. I don't think that is too early at all. Our dog Brynn was around before Alex and they are best buddies, same thing with our cat Leilou. The only thing is do you want to be worrying about obedience training the puppy when Jake & B2 are that age? Okay, next q, what age do people recoemmend getting a pupy. We were thinknig about next xmas as Jake will be 2 and B2 will be one, but is that too young? Jake is one now and loves animals....from a distance. We have a yellow and black labrador. Clyde and Jess. They are lovely dogs and good with kids. if you buy from a breeder you will save yourself hundreds of dollars and you'll be almost gauranteed that all health checks have been done on the parents before breeding ie hips/elbows, heart etc
for instance..we paid $700 for clyde from the breeder and he came with papers that shows his 'family tree'. pet shops charge $1200 for golden retrievers (and the same amount approx for mixed breeds!!!)

It depends on what age you get them at, but if they are from a pet store you don't know how / if they have been handled since birth (or as close to birth as possible), and therefore may be more temperamental or harder to train. If you get them young enough (like a couple of months, tops) you might be OK, but I would probably suggest a breeder as well - that way you can be sure of certifications and things as well. Oh ! i'm golden retriever all the way!!!!!!!! clyde was 3 yesterday and he is sooooo great with jack. he lets jack climb all over him and take things from him etc one thing i will say......please please don't go to a pet shop to buy anything!
go to nzkc.co.nz and you may find some help there on which breed is for you and find a breeder. i'd also recommend a german shepherd. my parents breed them and have 5, all of which i totally trust with jack and always will.

i used to dislike little dogs but now have a bischon (sp) frise foxy cross. milo whos 6 on the 5th jan looks just like Hairy McClarey so kids looove him. I know you said not a toy dog, and she's not a toy dog, but is little, We have a Jack Russell, and she is absolutely fantabulous. I cannot recocomend them highly enough. THey can be "busy" but wonderful, friendly, playful dogs, and not too big or overwhelming, either. Tui loves Jacob, and dosent get mad when he grabs big handfulls of skin and pulls, or bites her ear, they are best mates. We had a Siberian wolfhound (looks like a wolf, like the dogs on snow dogs) and a Lab, both great dogs, but big, always hungry (lab) and DROOL!!!(lab again!) I hate drool!!!! Hi Lizzle, are you planning on getting a puppy or a a full grown dog?
If you get a puppy then it doesn't really matter what kind of dog it is they will grow up with having pigs around so will be used to it.
We have a Bull Terrier & she is wonderful. Not everyone's kettle of fish though. Its a rarely known fact that the breed was actually bred for guarding children. She is very easy maintenance eg no long hair, very friendly, doesn't eat much, AND she shares her bed with the cat or any of the sicky calves off the farm.
But I know most families tend to go for german shepards or labs. My mum has border collies. We had (I kid you not!) a Rottweiler that we got as a 10 week old pup, and he was soooo great with the kids. We brought him up around th ekids and he wasn't at all aggressive or anything. In fact, the silly thing was so placid that someone stole him out of our back garden and he didn't even bark! Willie was devastated!

My only advice is to get your dog very young so that it is used to the kids from day one. Lewis and I have decided when we move to gisborne, we'll get a dog. So any suggestinos on breed? We need one that is good with kids - obviously, we'll have a large fenced yard, and have enough time to walk once or twice a day. Now, my preference is for a larger dog. I'm not a fan of toys.
