I think Paw's summed it up from waht i remeber Santa came out of a story of a st who gave present's to poor kid's or something along those linesso that is what we tell Alan about how santa came about and the there is no real one just nice peole who dress like that for fun (let's hope I am not too far off) for us we do celebrate the birth of Christ we have got the boy's pressy's bur nver get alot for christmas cause it is not about us. bit like easter.
Ane a side thing form what i have read about the wiggles (Alan is hte biggest fan I know) Anthony the blue wiggle and his bro who produces alot of their stuff are devout catholic.
ETA: And plesae don't thin I am having ago at anyone here, but i think the fact that alot of teh time people write xmas instead of christmas is a good example of how Christ has been left out of alot of people celebration's.

We are religious here and it is about the birth of Jesus which my kids have been able to recite since they learnt to talk. Mercedes was even in her 1st christmas play when she was 3 playing the virgin mary lol.

The girls are most excited that I am taking them to midnight mass for the first time.

We celebrate christmas as the birth of jesus, being thankful for family and friends and a time of giving for love ones and others less fortunate.

For me christmas is celebrating the birth of Christ. My parents never did the whole Santa thing and I'm glad they didn't (for me personally).

I was thinking that as well, Liz when I accidently watched the wiggles today. I thought it was awesome and was singing the carols to Jake and telling him about the Baby Jesus, but he kept saying NO SINGING MAMA. Not this year, as Jake is too disruptive, but I will take the kids to mass etc and tell them about the "real meaning" of christmas, so Jake dosent think its all about the warehouse.

Christmas, and I do love it soooooooo much, is very commercail now, but as with everything, it is what you make it (or not). I agree that Christmas has become less religious - I am sure that there are loads of people out there who don't know the story, yet still celebrate (and enjoy the presents), I am pleased I know the Christmas story and want to share that

DH and I were just talking the other day about what we would be teaching Luke about Christmas and Santa - my mum told me the other day that she never told us that Santa was real - we just learnt that from friends/school/kindy. She said she didn't want to lie to us about Christmas and what was real...

I love Christmas - everything, from the real meaning, the carols and the family all together - and thats what I want to pass on to my kids.

what about ofering your grapefruit to a local resthome for the residents there....they may love it - if you were up here I would know some who def would!!!

Being raised catholic, I always associated Christmas with going to midnight mass (staying up till midnight was a treat) and doing the Nativity Play at school, where all the girls got to be angels and the boys shepherds.

We did the Santa thing too. Now its more about getting together with family and enjoying a nice meal.

thinking about xmas now and wondering what i am going to tell the boys- religion wise. Imight need a new book. Jake only really understands Santa brings presents and has reindeer. He doesn't like any real santas and wil yell at any who wave and/or speak. "I DON"T LIKE YOU!". charming child. I like the idea about St. Nicholas and we are going to do the kmart tree next week as well as the Arohanui tree (hospice where my grandfather died). We did the food drive this year too and I explained why. actually don't think he really got that

Similar to Paws.... we are already teaching our girls that Santa is pretend and intend to teach the story of St Nicholas as they get older (as well as the traditional Christmas/Baby Jesus story of course). IMO it puts everything into better perspective to have the background of Santa and it also gives a bigger picture.

We have a lot of talk about birthdays at our place at the moment with DH on the 23rd and Hannah on the 27th lol, then Kryssi in January... so of course Briona wants to know when is her birthday. (Haha it's in July.) So I've been saying "Christmas is Jesus' birthday and so EVERYONE gets a present". Yeah it does become less and less Christian each year.

That said there were 5 churches in our local Santa Parade this year and we were marching with our church...it was awesome!!!

Christmas is all about the birth of our Saviour for us so I guess we're the opposite to a lot of others, that is the main focus we will teach Maddie while teaching about Santa will purely be telling her that it is a story some like to imagine is real and eventually teaching her were the story of Santa came from.

We're quite religious (to a point) so for us Xmas is all about the birth of Christ, but I do agree, Xmas does seem to be being de-religiousized (what a cool word, can you tell I made it up ), in Sydney the Westfields won't have a nativity display coz it might offend people who aren't Christian.
