we used insurance to re-carpet our place (hair dye stains )    the stains were in the lounge but as it's all open plan they had to do the kitchen/dining area as well.....so we paid $1100 extra and got the rest of the house done at the same time.......my asthma and jack's has been significantly better since

Yeah we were amazed after our living room was done. It looked so much nicer and smelt really different without stinky carpet!

Yay, glad you managed to convince him! My hubby is a carpet layer and the house we are renting had the most disgusting carpet in it. He would get carpet left over from jobs so we had big mats everywhere as I hated letting Ashleigh crawl around on foul carpet    But we finally convinced the landlord a month or so back to let us recarpet and it is sooooooo good now! Carpet court is who we would go to cause they did our living room so we know they have the same carpet. The annoying thing though is they aren't open til the 7th of Jan. i agree with 3boys, that was the first thing that sprung to mind.
you could also get someone in from somewhere like carpet court, and have them give you a quote before you approach DH again

Nah DH likes it when we pay off a lump sum he likes to reduce payments rather than have a lesser term, he likes to have a benefit of that type of thing immediately rather than having the benefit come in 20 something years lol.


Janine - I think I'll use your arguement to convince hubby. When I was a kid we lived in a 100 yr old house, crap carpet cos my parents were poor buggas. I had asthma, then they built a new house, brand new carpet and no longer needed anything for my asthma. In my old flat I had new carpet as well and never had a prob but in this house I do notice it sometimes, it's not overly bad but it's still there.

I would go for it too, asthma sucks and chances are that sinc eyou have it Daniel could get it too eventually. We have been in crappy houses for most of Paris's life with crappy carpets that never felt clean no matter how much i vaccumed and cleaned them, her asthma was terrible, constant sickness, especially last year in a place with old crap carpets with no underlay. we moved her this year to a plce with underlay and carpet, just over 2 yrs old. and guess what, not much asthma, not much sickness.

Go for it. The last thing you need is carpet that is going to encourage sensitivitys, and really, if you want it all the same colour no matter who told you otherwise, chances are if you go to do it in a few years time you won't necessarily be able to get the same carpet so it would be a different colour or whatever.

Were you going to put a lump on your mortgage and then reduce your payments? We have actually hired a rug doctor twice to clean the carpet but it didn't do a thing. It's actually really gross carpet. It's got all dog hair in it from the last owner and it smells kinda funky too which is really just nasty lol.

ETA: We also had our hallway professionally cleaned (insurance after the fire, thanks to the fireman boot prints all up it) but it's still extremely dirty/dusty/hairy. So I don't believe any amount of cleaning will make it cleaner. And the carpet has no underlay.

Also, paying off $5k of our mortgage won't do jack sh*t to our payments. It only reduces it by about $13 a fortnight depending on the interest rate which is why I'd rather see the money be put to use that we will actually benefit from.

Id go witht he carpet, but I would try to find some that wouldnt use all of the money.. We got new carpet in our living room after we had a small fire. It is great since our original carpet is horrible nylon crap that is really dirty looking, thin and worn in so many places.

The rest of the house is way dustier than the living room because of the carpet and so it sets off my asthma a little but it also can't be that great for Daniel. It's also significantly colder under foot than the living room.

When the living room was done we specifically chose a colour that has been around for ages and was gonna stay in "fashion" so that we could eventually get the rest of the house done.

We have $5k sitting in an account that we were going to put on our mortgage when it comes up for its interest rate review.

I would however like to put some of that money towards getting new carpet. We only need to carpet 3 bedrooms (they aren't big) and their wardrobes, as well as half our hallway (the other half is lino). So it wouldn't be that expensive and we would still have some of that $5k left over.

It's not money that we would really miss. It does nothing at the moment.

DH's arguement is that we can't afford it and he doesn't see it as a necessity at the moment and wants to get it done after we are done with kids (so in 5+ years time).

The arguement of not being able to afford it is crap since we have the money sitting there doing nothing. I think it would be far easier to recarpet that part of the house before you have more crap to move outta the rooms like when you have more kids. And it's smarter to do it before winter so the rooms will be a little more warmer or at least hold their heat a bit better.
