Yeah, I have a father who usually has matching 4WD's (both for himself ), and 2 run around cars (one that looks nice, one that's not so great but is a station wagon so holds more stuff). Meanwhile, my mums had the same bluebird for 7 years and sometimes the radio, clock and windscreen wipers don't work. Dad refuses to buy her a new car though until she decides exactly what she wants and what colour (a silver audi was not what he had in mind though so still the bluebird runs...)

I figure 3 cars aren't too bad, and as for suggesting DH sell his gas-guzzling car.... Well, we might be buying a new house so looks like 2008 will definitely be a frugal one for us. Putting in an offer today!

We've been good in previous years but 2007 got away on us. Our only debt is our mortgage, we pay off our tiny credit card limit each month and never buy on HP, but we haven't been saving well at all this year and spending heaps on impulse purchases and not really denying ourselves anything. I'd like to teach our kids better money habits than that.
This year I would also like to set up a regular contribution to a couple of charities that we both would like to support, instead of giving to random causes that catch me on the street. I think it is important to allocate some income to charity, when possible.
Nikki, I am a regular on sorted, it's a great site! Their budget calculators freak me out every time, good for putting spending into perspective

That's exactly what I've done too. And seeing as I will start accumulating interest because I've finished my degree, we really need to look at paying it off. We could have this year but we bought a 3rd car as it works out cheaper to pay for 3 cars so he doesn't drive his gas-guzzling car out to camp everyday.

Next year my plan is to pay off the credit card (from our honeymoon in February), and my lounge suite which goes on to interest in May. If DH goes overseas for a few months, I will pay off the OD, buy a new TV for DH and demolish and redo my kitchen. It will be for us as well. More in the sense of sticking to the budget and not going overboard due to lots of visitors coming over.

Still need to get a few things for the house but that is all budgeted for. I will be so glad when my studying is over as that will be a lot of cash we can save then. Im with you Lizzle, every year is frugal for me BUT since starting work and having extra money I have been wasting it on cafes and things for the kids they really dont need. Ekkk my creditcards are needing a bit of attention too as they are a mess!

we have no choice as every year is frugal! But hopefully now I've finished i can get a ful-time job and we can start saving! Just got my scholarship which 90% of has gone on bills. And could possibly have $5000 inheritence by the end of the year, but am not counting on it now - not after last time. but we are hoping to pay off some student loan (hahaha - our loan is like a mortgage), and save some for a house. I'm too scared to do a budget just yet. I'm going to wait till I know exactly how much DH will be sending to me each week.

I'm going to put the money I get from SL straight onto the credit card for the 1st semester so that will be there waiting for me when we go overseas.

I know I shouldn't count on it but we will be getting a huge refund from IRD as I way over estimated DH's income for this financial year so that refund will go a long way with bills.

Yep me too. I'm saving for our holiday in June next year so for the first 6 months I want to save as much as I can so me and the boys can have a great time away.

I think not having DH in the house will cut down our grocery bill so that will be a good start (wishful thinking; it'll take me a few shops to get used to him not being here and not buying so much meat).
