LOL Janine - I see your McD's and raise you 10 Maya has spent far too much time there - one of the downfalls of being a working Mum. Not helped by the fact that her paediatrician and dietitian told me to take her there at 9 mths old to fatten her up after she lost so much weight when she was sick.

In reality we probably have McD's about once a week (her I mean, I don't eat it at all). Some weeks we don't at all, other weeks it feels like every other meal has been takeaways, but when you consider that she is a huge fruit girl it kind of balances itself out.

She thinks grapes and melon are the greatest treats, and she eats whole cucumbers so I figure I'm not doing too badly. Altho she has also inherited her fathers addiction to ice cream ...

I just figure everything in moderation, I never buy lollies or chippies to have at home, and she snacks on crackers and dried fruit. And she is a super-active kid - one of those never sits still for 3 seconds kids, makes me tired to watch her.

argh - missed this thread too - sugar and lollies.... I WISH that paris didn't know what they were. I think she has far too many! thanks to daddy who thinks it's ok... every shopping night she gets a tube on m&m's minis to eaton the way home - luckily, she only ever has not even a centimetre off the top of the tube and isn't interested after that. she doesn't like choccy bikkies as much as gingernuts. she loves her milk and water, so only has very watered down juice every once and while. She's pretty flexible - I mean, if she sees lollies then she wants them - but if she doesn't see them she's more than happy to have fruit etc. Has never had fizzy. She HAS had mcd's a few more times than most of the kids on here - but has mighty milk or a pump bottle, doesn't eat the food really - maybe a few bites here and there.. she goes for the toys and the playground. in fact - her ultimate treat sometimes on the weekends is getting a muffin for lunch! Ella knows chocolate now and anything in a bright wrapper is chocolate, whether its fudge, lollies etc etc.. (according to her).
Luckily I can usually give her a tiny piece and say all gone, or say chocolate later (with no further promises lol). This works for anything I don't want her to have.. Angie decided that coke gave her a sore tummy. Not sure how, as she has never had it, but nevermind.
She has lollies and stuff but will ask for a jellybean (she is still working on lollies she got for Christmas) and only take one!
I go with the theory that if lollies etc are an ok sometimes food to her then when she goes to birthday parties (and we get invited to far to many) she won't go mad, esp since most of the time we drop her off.
Angie is really interested in what foods are healthy and knows that too much sugar is bad and that she is supposed to have 5 serves of fruit/veges per day. i have a great babysitter (i'm in auckland) shes an early childhood teacher, is great with kids, has loads of energy and the best bit is she follows my instructions to the letter, which i have to say, makes evenings out much more enjoyable!!!
i don't really ask family to babysit as its harder to have them up about things your unhappy with.

I grew up in Taumarunui - no McDs and when i went o my nanas (feilding) during the holidays, giong there WAS a special treat. I would decide days in advance what I would have. It would be really exciting....what can I say? taumarunui is really really small!!!

i absolutley agree with you Lou - we give ourselves treats so why shouldnt our kids have them. McDs playgrounds are awesome. Last time I was there getting myself some greasy food I sent Hannah into the playground but she was a bit small to do it herself. Luckily there was a girl about 7 years old who is at that lovely mothering age and played with Hannah in the tunnels for ages. Yeah, that almost NEVER happens!!

Jake doesn't actually like fizzy drink...the bubbles I think. He has a glass of "juice" at lunch time. I say juice, but it is majorly watered down. Pretty much it's because I have a glass with my iron tablet and he wants some. This way I can trick him!
As for McD's - Jake likes chips and the tenders from BK, but we haven't been to Mcdonalds yet. I imagine he'll wanna go to the playground though. It's funny, lots of kids go, but actaully very few sit and eat their meals. I find as a mother that it is pretty easy to not feed Hannah junk food etc. I feel guilty when she has anything even remotely unhealthy.

My main thing at the moment is not giving Hannah juice. She has water and that's it. I babysat a friend's kid once who wouldn't touch water and would only drink juice. I don't think I could stand the hassle of having juice in the house all the time!!! Much easier when you can get it straight out of the tap

I'm also concerned about Hannah's teeth. They are so beautiful and white and perfect that I don't want to ruin them!!!

But yeah, it's other people feeding your child lollies etc that you have to worry about.

Although actually I may have to revise my position on this as Hannah has started getting very vocal whenever she sees something with a colourful shiny packet. Funny you guys talking about sugary food cos I said to Daniel today I am so going to watch what junk food Hannah eats. We went away with friends this weekend and their 3 year just wouldnt go to bed last night until like 9.30 cos he had had fizzy and lollies etc. Argh, dont want that to happen. Ella ate quite a few chocolates and other bits and pieces this Christmas but she usually eats very well and I never serve her unhealthy things for meals.

Yuk I hope to keep her away from McDees as long as possible, we never eat there and hopefully she won't either!! i didnt let the boys have junk food until they were around one - they had a blast at their 1st birthday with all the junk food although in saying that they mainly sat round the cheerios and munched. I know they arent the best either but better than a heap of lollies. And ppl cant believe that the boys have only been to McDonalds 3 times and the last time was in oct for their 2nd birthday. Most of my friends kids have a million McDs toys (ok not quite a million....but pretty close!!!) As for biscuits the boys get the good old plain ones super wines and the like which they prefer to fancy biscuits unless of cse they have chocolate on them!!!!   Also on the rare occasion the get fizzy it is sooooooo watered down its no longer fizzy... i think they just like the fact its coming out of the same bottle that every1 else is getting a drink from.
But i have to say my major pet hate is LOLLYPOPS!!!!! I'm afraid I'm a bit far away to give you any business, and bubba isn't even here yet LOL Best of luck though,I used to do a lot of babysitting when I was younger and it was quite good once I got regular clients.

However, what caught me was the o/t bit about sugar - I really don't want to even start feeding my child all sorts of artificial sugar, and am going to have to sit down at some stage and plan out how to work this into the grand scheme of things. This means next to no lollies, no fizzies - ick, and bikkies only on a special occasion. I have a stash of lollipops that jake is ALWAYS being given. He isn't even that keen on them, although stole one from my bag the other day and loved it - think it was more the fact he knew he wasn't meant to have it, than the actual taste.

doent that just drive you barmy when family and friends ignore what you say!!! I have a friend god bless her loving soul that always turns up will junk food for the boys and she knows im really particular about what they get but she sneaks it to them. All good for her when she can leave and im left with sugar hyped kids. Also her daughter is very overweight which makes me more aware of what they eat.
