I've stripped mine using that first method in the last week, and it hasn't done anything to the fleece. Otherwise if you don't want to use a brush you can always just kinda scrub it together with your hands

Use a clean dish brush (make this your nappy brush) and brush the fleece with a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Give the nappy a good scrub and then wash in one full cold water cycle without washing powder.

Put nappies in the wash as normal. Add about ˝ cup of white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment and add some baking soda to the machine. Once the wash cycle is finished, pop them through another rinse cycle to make sure all the vinegar is out of the nappies. This method is more to prevent your nappies from accumulating build-up, rather than ridding them of existing build-up.
