Ha ha. It wasn't that bad. Such a small amount anyway and it wasn't every day so I didn't actually even consider seeing my doctor about it - I probably should of but my sleep deprived mind didn't think of that. If it was a lot I probably would have been to see someone about the drugs but breast pads did the job (when I remembered to wear them) and made my rapidly shrinking chest still look reasonably decent.

ewww, gross. Did you consider taking the drugs to stop it altogether? I think i would've taken them - 4mths is way too long, especially when you're working!!!

Yep, stopped expressing during the day completely. For a couple of weeks afterwards I had to express one side as soon as I got home while Michaela fed off the other but every afternoon I would express the minimum I had to to feel comfortable and it slowly got less and less each day until I could stop entirely.

Stopping breastfeeding at 15 months took longer. I went back to work when Michaela was 5 months old. I was determined to continue breastfeeding until after 12 months (specialist advised if I did she'd have a reduced risk of inheriting a family illness). My work was really good and made sure I had heaps of express breaks and a private room - most businesses will do this if asked - but I found expressing at work so hard. I even saw a lactation consultant about it but the harder I tried the more stressed I got and the less milk I could express although I was rock solid and would easily express 1.5 bottles off one side when I got home and fed her from the other side.

After a couple of weeks back at work I made the decision to put Michaela on formula during the day but breastfed Michaela first thing in the morning and her night feeds.

This worked so well I continued it until Michaela was 15 months old.

we did with haleigh but we did it cause i was weaning her onto formula we used karicare with her ha no issues at all.

james we went through 4 or 5 formulas till we found the right one that didnt make him constipated or spilly.

I did both and I was fortunate to have it work really well,she was mostly breastfed but would have one formula a day , ummmmm i cant remember what my reasons were, i think it was because I was crap at expressing and her dad and I werent together but he would still have her overnight so i wanted her to be able to take the bottle so he could feed her.

from about 8-10wks we started giving charli a top-up bottle of formula at night because by the end of the day, i wasn't producing enough for her to see her through the night. we never had any problems with mixing formula and breast milk

We have given our daughter the odd formula feed per day (normally last thing at night) since she was 7wks old and she has been fine with it. It made it possible for me to take her off the breast altogether while I worked at getting my supply down and then re-introducing breast afterward. I think the earlier you start, the easier they will take to having both which is why i started giving her a little formula so early (i too plan to do a few hours every other day after my maternity leave ends). You could express if you ever wanted to put baby back on the breast at that time of day in the future, but when we gave one formula feed at night i just decided not to express at all - it only took a couple of nights to settle down and now my boobs just don't produce for that feed so don't get engorged overnight (does mean though that we will always have to give formula for that feed, which is fine by me). Your choice really.

I have started back at work this week, working only 2 days a week. I was going to look at introducing formula for the feeds that Ella would be missing.....until it was pointed out to me, that during the days that I would be working I would need to express in the middle of the day anyone (or otherwise I would get too engorged). Is there somewhere at your work place that you could express so that you could express enough for the next weeks feed? just a thought....

Good luck with going back to work....I had my first day today. It was hard, but we both survived .

I did the whole expressing and formula top up thing for a month. Cooper one day decided he preferred the bottle.. he basically forgot what the boob was, the fighting and stress got too much for the both of us so in the end I gave up.

We did for a while.. but Daniel ended up prefering bottle over boobie, hence why he is now bottle fed.

We started by getting some sachets to figure out which formula worked for him and that he liked. I am not wanting to stop breastfeeding but I am looking at going back to work one day a week and havent expressed in ages because a)I'm too lazy and b) tom is taking both boobs in the morning and that was always my best time to express.

Has anyone tried giving formula occassionally but still using breast most of the time?
