I too hope he gets a state funeral, he has been a brilliant ambassador for his country and a tireless activist for the rights of the people of Nepal.

Oh! I didn't even know! He was such a wonderful guy. I've met him a couple of times through work and every time came away thinking what a wonderful person and incredible life he has lived. I was also lucky enough to hear him speak on several occasions about his work in Nepal, such an amazing person. My heart goes out to his family, they shared him in life and will also have to share his death. RIP Sir Ed.

I think this is my "JFK moment", but Sir Edmund Hillary was one of my personal heroes, and his passing today has made me feel incredibly emotional. I met him a few years ago when I was volunteering at the Auckland Museum, and he always impressed me as a down-to-earth hero. His story inspires me so much -- an "ordinary New Zealander" who did something amazing through perseverence and belief in himself, then didn't just rest on his laurels, but made a point to give back to the people of Nepal and call attention to their plight. I'll miss him -- and he'll be a hard act to follow.
