Domino midwifes can care for you at Birthcare but not deliver there, that's my understanding of it. Yes I know that's what I mean, see the trouble is, if I like her (first appointment on Thurs.) I don't know if I want to go through all sorts of hassle to change to a midwife that can care for me at Birthcare?? If you go onto the website they have a full list of who has access. sorry to reply so late! um gosh let me see (was nearly 4 years ago) well i found most of the staff pretty good,i transferred there about an hour after caitlyn was born...since i had a very straightforward drugfree labour i could have had her there no sweat (but i liked the idea that the epidural was available at national womens hehe) anyway on the first night i went to the bathroom and on the way back to my bed i fainted! first time id ever done that-was quite excited but i can tell u the carpet is NOT soft lol.The nurse were great on the whole ie if ur hungry u just ring them on the direct line and they bring u food.

and for the majority of it they are helpful and patient with breastfeeding but the only thing i didnt like was the way they made me think babies mouth had to be really really wide as in could fit my whole breast not just the aerola nipple into it-and honestly thats how they described it -so that resulted in me thinking i was doing it wrong and crying about it for the first 2weeks( i got the hang of it tho-did it for 13months yay me)

all in all it is nice and there is a website i think its just www.birthcare.co.nz oh and u can put babies photo on it( me and mum always look at the birth announcements to see all da little bubbas lol)

If you were thinking about a natural labour then birthcare is a good place to do it. If the option of drugs is not avail then it makes the decision easier.

And if you were thinking about no drugs then I am the poster child! I am the BIGGEST sook, I (half) joked about needing an epidural a week before I was due cause I was so bad with any pain that I didn't want to feel a thing but in the end I had no drugs! It wasn't fun at the time but def do-able!!

I delivered at North Shore in the pool, it is nice. Yeah that's why I chickened out on giving birth there. I did what Emma did, tranferred there a few hours after Quinn was born. It was brilliant, excellent help with breatfeeding and (most) of the staff were great. I left after one day because of a meanie nurse but it is poss that I was overly sensitive and hormonal!!

If you deliver there you get a private room, but they have no pain relief except for the gas. I am planning (in advance) to go there with number two, if traffic allows.

Nat Womens is now based out of Ak City - the old hospital is closed, so if you are living in Auckland and having a hospital birth you will either be there or at North Shore or Waitakere.

Also Birthcare is free for 3 nights (govt funded) for a shared room (with one other Mum), you only have to pay if you want a private room. God, I SO need to get in touch with my midwife, haven't done that yet because of having been overseas etc. I have heard about Birthcare but we won't be able to afford it, however, I am wondering how I would get into the central hospital rather than national womens !! Loved it! I transferred there about 2 hours after Maya was born and they seriously rocked. I had a later postnatal admit to National Womens (the old one) and it doesn't even compare - at Birthcare you have a midwife assigned to you that is there as soon as you pick up the phone beside your bed, ensuite bathrooms, heaps of b/feeding help, plus the physio came to see me to discuss postnatal exercise and recovery. Will definitely go again with our next baby.
